  • Noise while riding Duke 250

Hello guys, I recently upgraded to KTM Duke 250 and it's my first bike above 100cc. While riding in lower rpm range of any gear, I hear a periodic "grrr grrr" sound, probably from the chain.

Example if I ride at 45kph in 4th gear on a straight road with some undulations, then the noise can be heard at almost every undulation.

Can somebody help me in determining and eliminating the noise? Is this a common thing in open chain drives?

Also, my friend who has the same bike does not hear any sound on his bike, in fact, even I don't hear any sound on my bike when I ride with a pillion.

PS- I had the bike serviced and chain tightened with no change whatsoever.

    Please help. Thank you.

Thanks for the thread. I myself am an owner of a white Duke 250 and have ridden close to 2000 kms. I find several valid points in the thread like the looks and AHO of the bike.

It seems people have a fundamental duty to inform you that "light jal rahi hai"

One thing I'd ask, how is the gear shifting smoothness (whether upshift or downshift) in your bike? I sometimes find it to be clunky and get a feedback on my fingers when I downshift (even though the clutch lever is fully depressed). Anybody with the same experience?

It's normal buddy, if the bike has not been run in, chances are high for more heat, and for the sound of the fan , the peeps on the 390 forum also had a similar complaint of the fan turning on without the bike running much , might be the same case here.

That's absolutely normal. When the bike heats up, the fan kicks in and cools the coolant. It's even more prominent when the bike is run in bumper to bumper traffic and slow moving traffic. Don't stop the bike like that and let it idle, it can and might cause the engine temperature to go up. As long as you are moving, air flows to the radiator and both the radiator and the engine is happy. One shouldn't stop and let it idle to glory as it can put undue stress on the fan which stays longer.

This is perfectly normal for a healthy bike.

            Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
            The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

            THE END

Idiot's who post such videos without understanding the motorcycle should be shot at point blank range.
That is absolutely normal and is NOT overheating.

This is probably noise from the chain guide. I had the chain lubed and adjusted at 500km and started experiencing this too. When i told this to the guys at KTM, i was told that this was normal.

I checked the chain guide and it looks OK. The sound may be normal like the KTM guys said, but it is annoying as well.

My query is about riding a bike with Slipper Clutch.
Is the process different specially while riding in traffic conditions to avoid stalling ? Thank you.

The slipper clutch prevents the rear wheel from locking during hard down shifts and also eliminates the need to rev match while downshifting (I think). You do not have to do anything different while riding in traffic.

The only difference is you need to give at least small input on the accelerator before releasing the clutch completely otherwise bike tends to stall sometimes. This is what I felt in my Duke 250 at least.

Yeah, Bike is silent and this noise just sticks out. Maybe it has something to do with the tightness / slack of the chain.
