• Apache RTR 160 Hyper Edge engine oil grade.

I can't find the correct oil grade for my bike. I've used motul 300v 15w50, shell advance ax7 20w40, Castrol power1 racing 10w40 and filled with motul 5100 15w50. The sales man says 40 pe 50 doesn't matter. I looked in Tvs service center they were promoting Tvs tru4 synthetic oil, it was 10w30. Seriously it's highly confusing. All oils gave me good results though. Please help.

Hey Guys,

I have RTR FI (2009), clocked about 28k.

Having few problems from last two years.

Problem 1:
While riding, bike is getting off many times, even when giving throttle and also in idle - when I checked with TVS service and after several days the cheif mechanic found tank is full of rust and asked to change tank and fuel filter. But I avoided that at that time and later after few months tried to change it but they told no stock and could get it till now. Was frustrated with TVS service centers.

Later found a good private service center, that guy cleaned the tank and fuel filter, after that the problem got reduced somewhat but the problem continues. And now 4 months gone, it got increased and getting off many times.

I am fed up with this - any permanent solution for this? Private Mech told we will try to change it to carb. - Is it good idea?

Problem 2:
While riding getting too much vibration and wobbling which caused me neck pain after changing "Steering Cone Kit" it got reduced a bit, but while riding above 65 kmph too much wobbling and vibration and sometimes can't drive above 70 kmph. When I checked mech told to change both the tyres.
Any good tyres other than TVS? Shall I go for Zapper or Michelin? Shall I go for tubeless?

Also getting very low mileage.

Please suggest any good mech in Chennai for FI.

I love this bike but due to unavailability of good mechs and no parts for FI, fed up and thinking to move on.

Thanks in advance.

Try changing the fuel filter first and then get the injectors cleaned.
Don't change it to carb its a big headache mainly due to coil and magneto of Fi bikes.
For tires go for the Mrf zapper fy1. The r15 front tires. Its 90/80-17 profile. First few kms you will find the bike leaning a bit more but you will get used to it. The grip is just awesome. Or you can fix the mrf zapper fs 90/90-17.
For rear go for the zapper vyde 100/90-18

Even change the front wheel bearings during change of tyre.

shankhar you can try for Michelin front tyre which I had for my bike recently and I liked it as it comes with stock specifications 90/90/17

Thanks for the reply, have asked to clean the injectors and to check the status of fuel filter. Will have to check whether the problem reduces/go away after service.

Does Zapper Vyde go well, since RTR has only 17.

The service center owner suggested RTR 200's tyres - TVS Remora - he mentioned it's Bridgestone coming in the name of TVS and told it's good and low profile.

I have planned to replace the tyres by next month, due to other constraints.
curve_king, pradeepmundra: Thanks will check.

The problem is to find good service centers, have tried with most of the TVS service centers, all are worst and few are average.

• RTR 160 long term ownership Review

Hi guys,
As all of you guys know RTR was a tried and tested machine for a long period(started back with Fiero).
It's been 2 years since I bought this beast.
Now it's clocked around 12k kms and still it's the same.
Comfort:
As its the foremost priority for me,so its given as first in list.
I'm 5'9"
Seats are well foamed for rider, tank provides adequate space for knees and it's quite easy to hold the tank with thighs.
Suspension is pretty much on the stiffer side which yields a better handling ( will say more about in handling section).
I keep on lower most notch for adjustment as I'm just 65kgs.
So overall can live with it,no back pain even on long trips.
Power:
It's a 159.7cc single cylinder air cooled blah...blahhh..(I won't talk much about tech specs as company talk about it more&#128540
Ample of torque at lower revband making city overtakes very easy.
Gearing is short (good for wheelies&#128521 but finally making a poor top end of 124kmph, it's OK for Indian road conditions most of the time and it's better than its rivals where Fz-s struggles past 100kmph.
Engine is grunty and exhaust note is no word to describe it's absolute treat to ears.
Engine treats your hand with vibes but past 7k rpm it quite vanishes to a extent.(again can live with it)
Chassis and handling:
With a quite old type chassis it manages to put a smile on your face, this is where TVS excels others in the lane.
It's flickable very flickable and nimble in corners.
With stock TVS tyres (mine was the first batch of RTR 160 pearl white it had TVS tyres in place of REMORA)
it offers a awesome life of more than 30k kms but lacks the feel and confidence.
It's very poor in terms of grip it lacks what others in the competition provides.
Wet grip was OK but hard braking will leave you fishtailing.
Consider a decent tyre upgrade than projectors and funky stuff.
Upgrading to a sticky tyre will give confidence in corners and hard braking.
Brakes:
It offers good feedback and initial bite.
Brakes are progressive and it can bring this beast to a stop at ease.
Rear brakes mostly squeak due to dust but after a wash it will vanish.
Brake pads are good in terms of life time, giving a perfect brake with a long life.
Console:
It gives decent info about your ride
Has two trip meters, A 0-60 timer(which I pretty much love).
And a large readable digital speedo.
Fuel gauge is accurate at last one bar you get reserve and it's a large two liter then after a half liter usage you get your fuel warning.
Sometimes in rainy days(only in heavy rain) the speedo gets fogged.
But goes away soon.

I have been using Shell AX7. Performs well at higher engine temperatures. Tried TVS TRU4 fully synthetic last time, as per advice from service centre and it is really bad in comparison.

when ever i do a self start on my apache, the digital speedometer console shuts off and on, but the bike didn't start, it starts by a kicker. is it a sign of weak battery.
