^^ speaking of the 'self starter' my mech says that he tried putting bigger batteries on a unicorn/zma and the result was a burnt starter! Techies, can you tell me if this is possible?
well, the way i see it either you talk about batteries or you can talk about the upcoming new bike.Originally posted by rohitabc View Postdont know where the discussion going

Thats quite exected, as the batt can supply more power.Originally posted by nirvan View PostThe self starter turns over more eagerly
. Serious, I think it does, resulting in easier starts.
Huh?! Sounds highly unlikely that its due to the battery.Originally posted by 46wannabe View Post^^ speaking of the 'self starter' my mech says that he tried putting bigger batteries on a unicorn/zma and the result was a burnt starter! Techies, can you tell me if this is possible?
A 9 Ah battery is thicker than a 7 Ah battery. Then how can it possibly fit inside the stock battery cage? Something will have to be done to accomodate the extra width!
Dudes, since only Exide and Amco currently make 7 Ah batteries (dont know about Standard Farukawa), I decided to look around. There is one more option in 7 Ah batteries - Speed. Its made by Tafe. Dealer said its part of the Amco group. Cost is only Rs. 800 compared to Exide's Rs. 1,200. Has anybody used this battery?Last edited by Raccoon; 07-20-2009, 02:30 AM.

It has been done by quite a few ZMA owners out here. It just involves some little adjustment to the support bar that covers the stock battery. check the pictures in post #1661 on the previous page.Originally posted by Raccoon View PostThats quite exected, as the batt can supply more power.

A burnt starter motor did cross my mind. The starter motor on my bike is definitely turning over faster than it was with a new 7AH battery.Originally posted by Raccoon View PostThats quite exected, as the batt can supply more power.

It shouldn't be an issue though unless the bike is cranked for long periods of time when it does not start. Better to wait 10-15 seconds (if not more) between each long set of cranks.

Checked out your pics again, but still cant quite make out how exactly you have gotten the fatter battery to fit. The battery cage looks identical to whats on my CBZ-X. Have you bent the hinged support bar? But if its bent, then how would you screw it closed?Originally posted by 46wannabe View PostIt has been done by quite a few ZMA owners out here. With hammer, I pushed the frame outwards to make room for the fatter battery. It is very slight adjustment and not a major modification.Originally posted by Raccoon View PostChecked out your pics again, but still cant quite make out how exactly you have gotten the fatter battery to fit. Issue with valve timing
Hi guys, I have a problem with my 30k KM old Karizma. I was having one of ZMA's timing issue wherein my engine was giving out bad tak-tak sounds esp when cold. This sound would go away when the engine would warm up. I have had the same issue around 10k KMS back under warranty when the ASC folks replaced the camshaft and installed a new valve kit.
This time, I could not take the bike to the mechanic in time and one day, the tak-tak sound got worse and suddenly the frequency of the sound increased and there was a complete drop in power.
It seemed to me like the tensioner had gone bad. When I took the service centre at Millemium (Domlur), the folks there opened up the head and after inspecting want to change the valve kit, bore kit, also work on the crankshaft (they say there is a play in the crank) and maybe also the tensioner. They are not telling me conclusively about the source of the problem and looks like symptomatic relief to me and that too, they are insisting on replacing almost every part.
Not that I would not want to do it if I have to but their approach is dumbfounding me.
So I need help on how to figure the whole thing out. My immediate problem is to get the bike in a working condition (I want to check if oil leaking into the bore is from the head than below first) and then go to a mechanic who can make convince me about the required repairs.
Has anyone had a similar experience where the timing has gotten messed up? I am going to go to the mechanic tomorrow morning and need to know the right approach to solving this issue. I hate to just replace everything just coz I do not know what to fix and then after a few thousands of kms return to the service centre.
Also, if someone could tell me a decent ZMA mechanic in Bangalore.
