Getting angry at somebody is the same as getting angry with a bike that just won't go. You should stop and start thinking.
A good mechanic will let you watch even without charging you for it. |
It is funny to know that we've been imitated and copied so well and surprising when we notice our mistakes are copied as well.

Re: Peculiar question
Owners/Experts,
Finally I have zeroed down my options of getting my first bike. To be frank the option list wasn't much big with the major weightage to comfort of a cruiser.
I have had several trips to various dealers in Bangalore and majorly they differ only on the accessory offering. Till now the best quote is from Khivraj.- Wanted to know your personal experience/review of Khivraj in terms of after sales support.
- Being a first time bike owner what all must-have accessories should be looked for (P.S. not looking for much mods, want to enjoy the cruiser in stock form).

Re: Peculiar question
Hi,
I recently purchased avenger 220(2 weeks old). I am finding it hard while shifting gears. Also it gets stuck in 2-3 gear and after some time it gets free on its own. I made sure that I am using clutch properly while shifting gears. Service center person said he made changes to clutch. However the problem persists.
Any suggestions.

don't worry...i have done my first service on 185 kms. go for the first service and instead of changing the engine oil to Dtsi 10000, you take 2x1 ltr bottle of Motul 51004t semi synthetic oil since it requires 1150 ml for a refill, tell them to pour it during service and personally make sure that they are doing it.keep the rest in hand for the next refill. dont mix any thing with the engine oil. gears wont slip and you will get the neutral.do the proper run in as per manual.dont let anyone ride rather than you during run in.Happy riding.
good luck

Re: Peculiar question
Thanks. I missed your reply and been to first servicing. After servicing problems became worse. Now gear gets stuck and also slips.
This made me visit the service center again on Diwali day. Luckily there was a person who attended me and said gear lever needs to be replaced. However they don't have the gear lever. Also my speedometer and odo stopped working after 26km, which will be rectified but they don't have part required. He suggested to bring back the bike after 5 days. I went after 6 days and still they don't have parts required.
Has anyone else been through the same problem ?
Which is the best bajaj service center in Pune ? (Had bad experience with GEMS satara road)
Is there a list of parts covered in warranty ?

Re: Peculiar question
I have changed my engine oil to Motul 300V fully synth. full easter 15w50 oil.. Bike has been running awesome since then.. not much difference in power or mileage.. but performance has gone up many folds.. vibrations have almost dis-appeared.. it starts at first self in any weather condition.. and sounds same always.. at any speed I ride.. for any number of kilometers.. bike never feels stressed.. even at 110kmph.. it remains smooth and does not sound harsh.. its little on expensive side.. but its more than worth of the money. I would recommend to try.. and oh yes.. Gears are super smooth too.Originally posted by cruiserboy View Postbrother you can purchase SAE90 grade gear oil from petrol pumps...you can also try SAE140 grade.

Re: Bajaj Avenger - All versions
I am not sure about the 3100, you can check it from a local shop or also ask Motul on their facebook page... as 300V is the best of all, so opted for it. 300V costed me 930/Liter. but it runs double than what your normal oil runs.. so.. EOD does not cost that much...Originally posted by shyamsharma View PostWhat r the approx price of these oil per ltr

Re: Peculiar question
Interesting incident with Khivraj Bajaj Indiranagar service center yesterday -
I dropped of my Avy220 for a paid service at 18000Km. I clearly instructed to not change the oil (Was intending to get the oil changed myself to the one mentioned above in this thread) and had the person write it down on the job sheet. The person showed me work out front brake pad and said it need to be replaced. I gave him a go ahead.
I also informed that I needed the bike in the evening. So he put the delivery time at 5:30PM.
Around 4:30PM I call up to check when the bike will be ready.
After getting the call transferred around a few times, someone informed me that the chain sproket was all gone and needs replacement. Price was Rs1800/-. I said ok and then happened to ask when I will get the bike. The person ask me to call back after one day.
Since I needed the bike in the evening, I told him to not change anything & return the bike.
So the person on the other end informs me quite rudely that the bike is all opened up and cannot be returned.
Not happy at the tone, I told him that I was promised delivery at 5:30PM and I need the bike. The person flatly refused saying that it will take quite some time to put the bike together.
So finally I told him that I am coming down to pick the bike and if needed I will assemble it myself and take it away.
In 10min (I work nearby in Domlur) I was at the service station & surprised to see the bike in a corner on 2nd floor all assembled. Surprised I talked to the supervisor who told me that sprocket is so bad that the chain will be cut within a few Km. But as per my request they did not change anything. This person sounded reasonable and knowledgeable; so I told him that I have to go urgently and I will bring the bike back after a few days for the change.
Now the fun started while I was waiting to pay my bill:
The guy sitting next to me was also getting his Avy220 serviced. His bike was in the service center was the last 3 days and they had change front break-pads, chain sprocket & bunch of other stuff on the at 12K Km.
Surprised I asked another guy who was standing near the glass watching his Avenger on the other side. Same thing for him. Chain sprocket replacement recommended.
Then while paying my bill, I saw charges for oil change. I informed the cashier that I had clearly asked for no oil change and showed her where it was noted on my job card. She looked at it for a while and then removes the oil changes from my bill. On asking whether they actually changed or not changed, she calls up someone phone, talks on Kannada and tell me that they did not change anything. Bunch of scheming scums.
Still I think they overcharged me for a bunch of other labor which I believe they never did.
Anyway a good lesson learned. I should go to Venkat's place but I heard they have a long waiting.
Question for folks on the forum:
* If Avy220 known to have a Chain sprocket problem?
* How can I check whether they actually replaced by front brake pads?
* How do I change the oil myself? Time to get into some DIY business.

Re: Peculiar question
Yes. Avenger's open chain system is prone to wear and tear. The chain would demand cleaning and lubrication once every 500kms.Originally posted by dichkaun View Post

DIY is fun. Be prepared to please everybody at home especially if you are married. Welcome to DIY mate.
Oil change is quite easy but gets messy and disposing old oil is tiresome. And avenger needs 1.2lit of oil. Best deal would be to pay 30bucks to a roadside mechanic and get it done in front of you. I recommend mineral oil.Last edited by petrolhead_chn; 11-21-2013, 10:01 PM.My DIY(s) - Sprocket bearing change | Paint job | Custom speedo dial

Re: Peculiar question
I have somewhat experience of mainting bikes and with these service center guys.. i have been riding from 12+ years now.. Since first time I took my bike for service till day, I do not perfer to give my bike to mechanics and want to have service in front of me..Originally posted by dichkaun View PostQuestion for folks on the forum:

Coming to my Avenger.. on my 3rd service, the service center guy totally refused to do it in front of me and wanted me to leave the bike for one day.. (not possible)..
So not caring about my 3rd free service, I took the bike to a local mechanic.. and told him what all to do (individually) so total he charged me was 170 bucks including washing the bike.. and service centers charge 400 aprox. which they do the same things..
Plus I bought a Motul 300V which is a expensive oil, and I did not want them to change in my absence.. so.. had it changed from the local guy.. who took 20 bucks for that (170 was total inclusive of oil change).
and since then.. Im telling you.. the bike is so smooth.. and vibrations and all are gone till 90Kmph.. bike sounds happy any any speeds.. even at 110 it does not feel stressed.
Now coming to your question..
1. Avy. has a open chain system (O-ring) which is prone to have problems after some time.. Depends on how much you lubricate the chain and with what..
2. The only way to check the front brake pad is to check how much the break screw is tightened, if it is not.. then it is new.. otherwise.. will have to open the tyre to check it.
3. Changing oil is not a big deal.. there is a bolt at the bottom of the engine.. open that and let the used oil drain out.. and then fill the new oil after you close the bolt.. its better you get it done by a road side mechanic coz it very messy.
Advise.. never trust any mechanic.. be it service center or road side when it comes to your bike.. Try and get the bike serviced/fixed in front of you only other wise.. take a time when he is free.. or find some other mechanic.
Bikes with bigger engines. its always good to use synthetic oils.. you can search on google and you will find hell lot of sites explaining you why..Last edited by Dimpy; 11-21-2013, 11:25 PM.If you have never done a mistake in your life, it means you have never tried anything new.
