5- It is totally your decision

If I were you, I would get down to first checking the engine and all the bearings, bushes and foundation bolts and rubber mountings, if possible, separate the whole engine from the frame, check for any rusts and then refix them or repaint/rework as needed and fit things again with new rubber mounts and use a torque wrench for the work too.

Next, if the engine is good, check the carburettor and change anything that's needed after a thorough cleaning, replace diaphragm etc.

Next check all fuel lines if working fine.

Next up, rework, clean and replace those lights as needed.

Then do a full servicing, new air filter, pour in fresh engine oil, new spark plugs or clean the older ones.

At last take the wheels out, rebalance them or true them thoroughly and refit them, replace front suspension oil and retune springs if needed, new coneset and new rear swingarm bushes follow suit.

The cost to do all this will come to be around 6000 if there is no problem with the engine. Even if the engine has issues, new bore and piston kit costs 2500, so around 10k of expenditure will make it a whole new bike. And oh that reminds me, get compression checked too.

So for around 10k the bike is new, what next ? New paint and stickers follow suit.

This all will make the old baby run new again. But I would recommend doing it yourself or if unsure, get it done from a good mechanic, use all quality and original parts.

    That's all.
    Cheers !
Man, I know I'm months late on this, but thank you so much for the detailed reply. I certainly wasn't expecting it. A mechanic I visited ended up doing a lot of what you suggested over time.

My fuel tank developed 4 holes and started leaking all over the place so I got a new tank for 3.6k. The noise I spoke of turned out to be from some bearings

Now the front brakes don't work at all. I showed it to two mechanics and they cleaned the entire thing, added more brake fluid, etc, but the problem comes back in a few hours. They've basically given up and told me to buy a new brake kit. I haven't put a new battery in yet, but the RPM and fuel fauges work now. Another problem now is that the headlights are forever on high beam, no way to turn them off/low beam

I think I will sell this bike as I'm way too much of a beginner to maintain the several tiny oddities I've been facing. The Hornet 160R seems like a good choice.

Any suggestions on what I should fix before selling and what price I should expect then? Thanks.

I understand of getting the rims, perhaps I will do so when the current ones go off, getting mechanics to do these mods is a bit of a hassle. The next mods I plan is to attach a oil temp [replacing the stock dip stick with a compatible one bought from ali express] the tyres, and the tank.

I am also thinking of getting an upgrade on the lights, I hear that the stator/magnetic coil will have to be changed, considering that the bike is running on so many parts [ Pulsar, Splendour, Ct, Caliber etc both stock and knock offs] I think attaching an led main light would be a challenge. But lets see, perhaps one off an electric rickshaw will do.

Kudos mate! This is what motorcycling is about!

A suggestion from my end would be to drop the rim sizes to 17 inches so as to take advantage of the various tire options available in the market, the new CT100B comes with 17-inch rims on both ends, front 2.75 and rear 3.00. Plus the added advantage of acceleration would be nice, I would prefer to opt for drum's over disks on robust builds and I wouldn't bother with a disk conversion.

As for running similar size tires on both ends, it wouldn't be a good idea due to vagueness that comes along with upsizing the front, but if you really want to then you're in the clear as long as the rim size matches and there is no rubbing involved.

Do share more updates on your build as you go along.

    Cheers,
    A.P.

    So I had modded my 150, the donor bike was a ug 2 with the ug 3 alloy wheels. I had modified as following;

The first being attaching a splendour set up in the front with its rims running 2.75-18 in the front and 3.00-18 at the back

The other modification as you can see above is the p220 pegs and brake lines taken from the new 180 [ this was before the 150 twin disk came about. I did this as the original mounting places lost their threads. Further at the back you can see the local shock absorbers, [ apparently used in the rx100’s but I am not questioning]

On the other side you can see that I have attached the RTR 180 kick to compensate for the new foot pegs and adjusted the rear brake pedal accordingly. Again you can see the right hand case has been taken from a new pulsar as I had lost the old one because it cracked. This has both the inspection window and the dip stick. Notice that the old cover plastic for the batt box is not compatible with the new pegs and the lower half had to sawed off and that the other one is a knockoff of the newer one [ the left hand side]

So these are the mods that I have done if anyone wishes to do the same.

What I am concerned about is whether I can run 3.00-18 tyres both front and back. I really want to standardise the sizes and that I can get the meaty offroad ones in 3.00 -18 config and not the 2.75-18 so often.

Copied!! Thanks so much. will post a detailed thread how both are performing. will be doing the mod this weekend.

    1. Updating to 55/60 Night breaker.(without making any changes to wiring/electricals).
No Changes since the bulb wattage is high.
    2. Changing to 35w HID setup.(by making the wiring for lights direct from battery).
    Battery draining issues.within 20 to 30 km.
    3. Changing to 35 W LED bulbs.
This worked a little but not much satisfied.

I have read somewhere that changing to stator coil from avenger 180 will workout with upgrading to 55/60 headlights.

Please throw some lights on this MOD as i'm a noobie in this part. If anyone can post the link of the MOD it would be really great.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi VVk,
I have already ordered the stator coil for starting the MOD, if the stator coil change does not work then will look for other options.

IMHO The aux lights will glare the oncoming traffic and the focus is not so good.

I agree, But i dont have any option, The mechanic did get the bike in a running condition and says he has 20+ years experience. Going to service center is very expensive.

He says that he will get the standard pulsar tyre - which is a tubeless tyre according to him.

Bike is running ok now, But should i take it to any official bajaj service center for a proper service or is local mechanic enough?

When i gave bike to him it was in really bad state- he fixed all of it although it did cost me a bit.
pulsars of that vintage never came with tubeless tyres

its better not to use tubeless tires in rims not designed for them , as for the front tyre , check with a few local tyre shops you will get good ones for much less than 2k (1.6-1.8k inc tube and fitting)

ps: it seems to me that your mech is taking advantage of your ignorance

So I have been using Bajaj Pulsar 150 for over 8 years now and completed more than a lakh kms on this same machine. Engine overhauled once, changed block and piston kit, that cost me just 4k for everything from Bajaj itself.

I have tried a lot of oils and run Motul 5100 changing every 4000-5000kms. Yes that's a lot, but that's how I run. Regular servicing is done by myself or my trustworthy mech.

The bike runs like a gem to me considering my daily commute is from an altitude of 404m to 2000m+.
Yes, being old, there is a lot of power loss, but other than that, no issues, still does a 107kmph on GPS considering offroad tyres on the rear, it is respectable for me.

About doing long trips, I have done a maximum of 950kms in a day on same machine and this is a lot in the hilly winding twisties and a lot of climbs, steep ones, with a pillion and luggage. I am a happy man, since I park the machine on the highway or at open places when I am on my rides, I don't worry about it getting stolen anymore, honestly.

Fuel efficiency I get is 42kmpl on pushing it hard, yes it's a puny motor that I love to redline. On being gentle I have even seen close to 50kmpl mark even on an engine this old.

I still love this baby and there is a lot of time until I let this baby go. Currently just doing 4-5k kms a month.

The best thing according to me about owning this machine has been absolutely hassle free service and spares availability, dirt cheap spare pricing and maintenance, rock solid reliability (yet to let me down), riding far without the worry of the actual machine.

    Thanks for reading.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience.I hope that i too can one day be able to experience similar things on my used bike (hopefully! because right now im feeling very scared about my bike!)

How do you measure the fuel efficiency of your pulsar? Also, Right now my bike knowledge is almost 0, So should i tell my mechanic to use motul 5100 as well? The mechanic says he needs to replace front tyre on my pulsar and put tubeless tyre? He says it will cost me ~2k , is this reasonable price?

Also can any experienced folk please tell me whether this engine is pulsar engine or not? Because Dtsi logo is missing on the engine? What is going on??? Im really scared guys...
