Bike is running really good now thanks to the mechanic, But when i purchased it engine seized within 3 days, And i spent ~25k for the used pulsar 2009 UG 3 model. And had to spend another 15k for service and engine repair to get everything working nicely.

From my research on the net, I can find similar bikes in the ~25-30k range. But mechanics tell me this bike should not be purchased for more than 18k. Mistake has been made from my part and i suffered a loss of ~10 - 15 k on this old bike.

A few questions to the community members and experienced folks:

- What is a reasonable price for a fully working bajaj pulsar 2009 UG-3 Model with perfect documents?

- What are some things that i should do everyday to keep the bike in good condition?

- How long does it usually take a person to get good at riding motorcycles?

- Can this bike be used for long distance trips (like really 1k+ km? )
- To check reasonable pricing I use the OBV website or app.
- Change oil at regular intervals, regular servicing.
- Depends from person to person.
- Next answer in detail.

So I have been using Bajaj Pulsar 150 for over 8 years now and completed more than a lakh kms on this same machine. Engine overhauled once, changed block and piston kit, that cost me just 4k for everything from Bajaj itself.

I have tried a lot of oils and run Motul 5100 changing every 4000-5000kms. Yes that's a lot, but that's how I run. Regular servicing is done by myself or my trustworthy mech.

The bike runs like a gem to me considering my daily commute is from an altitude of 404m to 2000m+.
Yes, being old, there is a lot of power loss, but other than that, no issues, still does a 107kmph on GPS considering offroad tyres on the rear, it is respectable for me.

About doing long trips, I have done a maximum of 950kms in a day on same machine and this is a lot in the hilly winding twisties and a lot of climbs, steep ones, with a pillion and luggage. I am a happy man, since I park the machine on the highway or at open places when I am on my rides, I don't worry about it getting stolen anymore, honestly.

Fuel efficiency I get is 42kmpl on pushing it hard, yes it's a puny motor that I love to redline. On being gentle I have even seen close to 50kmpl mark even on an engine this old.

I still love this baby and there is a lot of time until I let this baby go. Currently just doing 4-5k kms a month.

The best thing according to me about owning this machine has been absolutely hassle free service and spares availability, dirt cheap spare pricing and maintenance, rock solid reliability (yet to let me down), riding far without the worry of the actual machine.

Thanks for reading.

Rear max I have used is a 130 section but removed chain cover since long for that to work.

I currently run 90/80-17 Zapper FY1 front and Ralco Speedblaster 110/80-17 at the rear.
My last set was same front and a 120/80-17 Zapper VYDE.

Planning to pick a MRF Masetter 80/90-17 for the front. The sidewall height is same on 90/80 and 80/90.
So for UG3 90/90-17 wont be a direct fit. Since it had old type forks and mudguard. 80/90-17 sounds better then.

Thank you for that. [emoji4]

According to him, it was serviced "just enough to get it working and in a ride-able condition". However, he did say that it needs a new battery.

Since it was unused for a very long time and this is my first motorcycle, I have a few questions/problems:

1. The RPM and fuel gauges do not work reliably/at all. In the case of the RPM, it works for a small timeframe when the bike is used after an interval of a few hours. In the case of fuel, it has never worked at all. The lights, including neutral and side indicators, exhibit the same problem as RPM where they work initially and then die. Is this all because of the dead battery? I really need the fuel gauge to work at least.
2. There's a strange rattling sound from somewhere in the bike when it moves. Even when I'm rolling the bike with the engine turned off, there's a small 'tak' sound every few inches. This amplifies greatly when it is moving between 15-35kmph though. After that, I cannot hear it as much. Any ideas?
3. Do I need a High Security Number Plate if I'm riding within Mumbai? If so, where do I get them in the western suburbs? How much should I pay for replacement ones anyway? I got quoted Rs. 300 for both, front and back, is that normal?
4. The lights, when they work, are really weak and I even have a missing indicator at the back. Can anyone approximate the cost to replace all of those?
5. Finally, is it worth actually spending money refurbishing this? Or should I take the ~10k I may get from it and buy a newer model?

Here are a couple pictures I have of the bike, suggestions are welcome, I really need some:

1- Get the battery changed first.
2-Check for any cables touching anywhere, check the coneset and all bearings.
3- Yes 300 is normal.
4- Around 2700.
5- It is totally your decision

If I were you, I would get down to first checking the engine and all the bearings, bushes and foundation bolts and rubber mountings, if possible, separate the whole engine from the frame, check for any rusts and then refix them or repaint/rework as needed and fit things again with new rubber mounts and use a torque wrench for the work too.

Next, if the engine is good, check the carburettor and change anything that's needed after a thorough cleaning, replace diaphragm etc.

Next check all fuel lines if working fine.

Next up, rework, clean and replace those lights as needed.

Then do a full servicing, new air filter, pour in fresh engine oil, new spark plugs or clean the older ones.

At last take the wheels out, rebalance them or true them thoroughly and refit them, replace front suspension oil and retune springs if needed, new coneset and new rear swingarm bushes follow suit.

The cost to do all this will come to be around 6000 if there is no problem with the engine. Even if the engine has issues, new bore and piston kit costs 2500, so around 10k of expenditure will make it a whole new bike. And oh that reminds me, get compression checked too.

So for around 10k the bike is new, what next ? New paint and stickers follow suit.

This all will make the old baby run new again. But I would recommend doing it yourself or if unsure, get it done from a good mechanic, use all quality and original parts.

That's all.
Cheers !

OK well, unfortunately the mechanic is at nagarbhavi, when I used to study at that area, the garage name is wheels automotive and the mechanic's name is Manju.

https://goo.gl/maps/gTn1diWGbm62 this should be the link to the map.

If you read few of the posts above, he was the one who helped me modify my old bike. You would have to the take the outerring road to get there and while I do understand that it is a long way off, he is the best that I can think of. If it were my case I would get the bike checked once in a while from him.

Now here i am sitting and wondering what could have been the issue? Could it be some fault in the CDI unit? or something else.

It comes with a 35W head lamp, you need to change the wiring for a high wattage lamp. You can try philips Xtra bright 35W.

You have a serious problem with your engine. You are going to Jam your piston if this is your situation. Get it corrected with a good mechanic. You may have to rebore your engine.....

Yup there are no further requirements as under that. apparntly the older gen the rear end parts measurements are the same. However it was in my case [ a bike that consists of bastardised parts] at the worst case scenario, what I bellive a simple extendor clamp would be sufficent to handle the job.
