  • Re: MotoGP 2013 Season - Updates

Almost everyone is in awe with Marc Marcquez's ability to drag and touch his elbows to the tarmac. Admittedly, it is dramatic and exciting to see such a young, aggressive and hugely talented guy in action. There was a time when the question was 'After Rossi, who?'. I think that question has been put to rest univocally.

However, how many of you know that Marc is not the first guy to touch his elbows to the tarmac? That honour goes to Jean Philippe Ruggia, a French man who was a serious contender for the 250cc championship. Consider this; he was on a 250cc 2 stroke with no traction control, no electronic suspension, no radial and carbon fiber brakes and no radial ply tyres. The TZ250 had a notoriously temperamental engine with a violent power delivery characteristic over a very narrow power band (about 3000 rpm).

Salute to you 'Elbows' Ruggia .

Amazing I didn't know that. I actually started following 250/moto2 after dani came to motogp in 2006.

But personally I feel the fear of a high side on a 1000cc machine is still bigger than a 2 stroke 250 with no electronics.
Personal opinion only. Based on my experience, I might be wrong.

When Marquez entered the MotoGP scene and his elbows became famous, photos of this guy and another from the late 80s (can't remember who) started circulating, reminding people that there were crazy riders even before marc. Stoner on the Honda also very often used to drag his elbow, but not as much as marc.

        But thanks for sharing

Many have dragged their elbow before. Nothing new in that. In fact, Rossi has done it too. But what separates MM from the rest is that he does that over and over, corner after corner and that too with much ferocious speed and lean angle. No wonder Aplinestars had to stamp a pair of sliders there.

It 'll go down in the history books like this:

          Hailwood--Roberts--Rossi--Marquez--.....

I never understood how Dani served the penalty to drop a position for missing the pit lane speed marker? Can someone clarify please?

Yeah, on the Lap when Marc joined in, when that slight collision took place, it slowed down Marc and allowed Dani to pass. he have the position back to Marc at the hairpin

              More info:
Pedrosa's only hiccup was to be instructed to drop back one position by Race Direction shortly after the bike change.

“When I went out of the pit I was last, because I stopped first, so I knew I didn't have to look back and I touched the white line a little bit. That was all,” he explained.

Pedrosa duly gave way to team-mate Marquez, who was black flagged shortly after for missing the pit stop window, returning Pedrosa to second.

Exactly this is what my concern is. IMO MM was technically out of the race when Dani gave away a position to him. Also this is doesn't look ideal in many angles. One can always drop back and regain a position in a corner thereby loosing very little time. A proper ride through or time penalty was more appropriate in this case. He made a racing mistake and should have paid the price for it.

^^ that's something that the RD decided, so honestly I guess you and I are clear about what happened. Why it happened that way, Race Direction can only answer.

Interesting read there. It's amazing to know that being the best of the best can also have it's vulnerabilities.
On the other hand, yamaha playing catchup is rather synced and are working together to bridge the gap.
This is another example of what i always say - "it's not just a sport anymore", eventually everything at the end is business.

Yamaha pushing for Marquez to be penalised for the Lorenzo/ Marc contact at PI. If it happens, then Marc starts at the back and with Practice getting rained out due to the Typhoon, it could be very interesting indeed.
