Almost everyone is in awe with Marc Marcquez's ability to drag and touch his elbows to the tarmac. Admittedly, it is dramatic and exciting to see such a young, aggressive and hugely talented guy in action. There was a time when the question was 'After Rossi, who?'. I think that question has been put to rest univocally.
However, how many of you know that Marc is not the first guy to touch his elbows to the tarmac? That honour goes to Jean Philippe Ruggia, a French man who was a serious contender for the 250cc championship. Consider this; he was on a 250cc 2 stroke with no traction control, no electronic suspension, no radial and carbon fiber brakes and no radial ply tyres. The TZ250 had a notoriously temperamental engine with a violent power delivery characteristic over a very narrow power band (about 3000 rpm).
Salute to you 'Elbows' Ruggia
