If you notice it's actually before getting into the corner, that's when the braking is at max. The rear wheel, at that time has almost negligible weight because of which they have to have a counter balance to keep the balanced while leaning.
Imagine this - right turn, butts on the right side of the seat and you have to brake hard to slow down. Obviously the bike will go out of balance because of the weight being towards right. So they keep their butts on the bike, use their leg to counter balance and keep the bike moving into the corner rather that straight.
That's actually not a technique but an instinct or a riding style.
Actually, It has no impact on anything (line, weight distribution, braking, stability). It's purely psychological. Sure, you can point me to armchair pundits who will present plausible-looking reasons but Rossi himself has said that he doesn't do it on purpose, his leg just instinctively, naturally dangles and it doesn't actually hurt/help the actual riding.

You know even I had this questions, I thought this has been discussed, and you have given a very logical answer to it, and even I do agree its more of instinct rather than a full proof technique, as it is not followed by all the riders.

May be niranjanvaidya would have something to add? NV anything on this?

      Cheers!

My two pice on the leg dangling thingy.

Only the hard brakers do it, Rossi, Crutchlow and quite a few others. I remember reading that it became common only after Rossi did it. The psychology of it being that if Rossi is the fastest on track, then how he rides must be the best way, so others followed suit.

Lorenzo never sticks his leg out, he is the easiest on the brakes and carries tremendous corner speed.

It is like after Marquez starting scraping his elbows on every corner, others are following suit, or at least photographers are clicking pictures now of others elbow scraping as well.

No real clarity as such, just wild hypothesis, as all the racers questioned say that they 'Just Do It', without giving it abundant thought!

One reason could be that under braking it helps move the weight bias on to the front. To get good braking (and prevent understeer) on the MotoGP bikes which have super stiff carcass tires the front needs to be heavily loaded.

If you recall the Jerez'13 final lap when Marquez overtook Lorenzo he had his inside foot on the ground. That was braking on the absolute limit and it seemed like he was almost propping up the bike using his leg or atleast ready to catch a fall. Very dirt bikish.

To be honest, Rossi started it for a specific reason. Others follow it for various other reasons

There is no tangible gain from this as someone rightly pointed out earlier. Back when Rossi started doing it, there were several theories
            • Maybe he uses the extra leverage to shift into position faster
            • Maybe he uses the leg to discourage the rider behind from making a move
            • Maybe he uses the same to feel the ground and kick it back if the rear starts sliding beyond a certain point (similar to motocross riders)
            • Maybe this allows him to create more drag

Now a combination of these is what riders use it for(I think). Have not seen anyone from the Indian National Championships using anything like this
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience.

Its nice to see this topic once again breach , all the points seems valid which are discussed but according to me it really does help in one thing! I started doing it after looking at Rossi do it and whenever I do that in a tight corner or a corner where I have carried more speed than usual, while exiting the corner I can hear myself scream "Yeah, I did a Rossi!!!"

I don't know if there was any rumor about Honda firing Dani at the end of this season. But looks like there were such talks and Honda has denied them.

Yay! Fire Dani and Bring back Casey! I know I know that aint gonna happen.

Realistically, do Team Repsol Honda have any potential replacement for Dani Pedrosa in sight? I dont think so they have. Or do they?
