Even the NS200 looked a bit disproportionate, especially the side profile, but it's still miles ahead of this design. The SS400/SS200 design is decidedly kitsch but unlike most kitsch these days it's not cool.
PS : I also have a bit of heartburn with the RC design, though overall it's head and shoulders above the pulsar language, I dislike the overexposed trellis. It's not a naked bike for God sake. Why do a Duke 1290 on a RC390?
I understand these days, the supersports design favours a bit of exposure than it was before, you have engine block visible, fairings are layered(may be helps in reducing fairing weight too) and a bit of underlying frame is of course visible(The MV F3, the daytona).
Ducati is an exception with the Panigale not revealing almost anything, yet it's considered vanity !!
I think the KTM RC8R and the 990 SDR were pinnacle of KTM design language. The RC8R looked clean and futuristic yet beautiful to look at(the front evoked different feelings much like the current RC390, but I for one like both of them
) and the SDR was menacing yet beautiful(again the front was not like by all). The 1290 on the other hand looks awkward and dare I say overdone. It's not an attractive design by any means. Kiska it seems has lost a bit of it's mojo.Somebody should tell them keeping as much frame exposed as possible doesn't qualify for a great design. I am not design guru, but in the end the buyers decide what is cool and what is not!!

every one seems to be so much worried about scooters these days. If it were to me i would ban them('scooters') all together.
