Thanks; but I'm replacing with new set of spokes; no chroming but replace with new parts.

    • Well, well, missed few days of update on this thread was all waiting for a good rest on sat & sun as the whole week after the tri-state was horrible. Had to pull in almost 12 hours which hardly gave me time to recover. Sorry about that.

Great going Aargee, I do visualize that your imense happiness after you took a spin doing a part of rebuild. I know it would have been great.

As I said, you had taken all the pains to procure each and every part that parts catalogue displays. It would not be easy task to spread over a period of time to rebuild. It should be a one shot complete result. Reasons? As I mentioned earlier, would reduce time on focusing and trouble shooting at once.

Tell me about taking off now and then or trying to do a bit by bit in your daily routine..is that easy?

I would say might not be that easy to cope up with our work. Trust me.

Let me know what is the percentage completion of the rebuild?

I wish you all the best and hope to take a spin on RX 2010 edition soon.

Regarding Unicorn spares.. lol - Oh My God! Least i want to hear again from these auto manufacturers of currently produced bikes. It only makes me sick to hear them say 'NO'.

Finally, I have decided to rebuild my RX, have no clue how it is going to be.. but decided to be at one shot. Yet to discuss with my mechanic. I'm posting a picture of my small collection of parts bought for the rebuild.

      • @Sriram - I don't know what to say; definitely one shot rebuild gives immense satisfaction. BUT!!! Who cares whether I do it or not? Who understands the love for the motorcycles? Who understands the patience of 7 months even if the entire labour is paid upfront?

This is completely different job than yours or anyone has done; replacing only few parts is quite different from replacing every single part. Trust me, none of the mechs has even heard about this kind of work before (probably even in xBhp too). People only do a part by part replacement & I've my own reasons (and it has proved very well) as why the entire parts must be replaced as such.

I'm still not tired of running behind these guys, I've not given up yet. When I give up, I give up with the mechs, not with my motorcycle

        • @Aargee - I do agree that no one would care if you are doing the rebuild at one shot or spread over a period of time. I was thinking that it should be bit difficult to manage with work, social and this rebuild at the same time. That's why suggested to do at one shot. If you are able to manage it, that's wonderful.

I'm always dearth of time when it comes to attend my personal work.

They all want to work Mon-Fri, if I agree then they're busy in during that day & ask to come on weekend & when I go on weekend, keep me wait indefinitely.

Everyone wants to see the parts, everyone wants me to leave the motorcycles & the parts with them. I'm not trying to convey any hidden message, but talking right on the fact; people accept the work verbally, but they don't pick the phone later & no commitment on the job; or ask 20 days to complete the work. And all this happens without me asking for how much they charge or without bargain even a single rupee on labour!!!

For some reason, I'm reminded of someone who adviced me to treat mechs as friends, my foot!!! Consider your friend doing this & will you ever call him again?

                  • Dude best is you completelly get trained in some mech shop for a month, and rebuild it yourself later, else i dont see the rebuild happening, no i am not kidding here..

You're 101% (read it hundred & one percent) right!!! But, if I do that, I'd be sent off permanently away from home or from office or both!!! I'll eventually land up in an asylum.

Pradeep - its simply way too difficult. Trust me, these days, the local garages are flooded with CT100, Max100R or at most Pulsars. RX garages are very rare. Next, I've to hunt down one such RX mech, who will train me or atleast allow me to work in their garage; now this is besides paying them to get me working there. Looks like I didn't make the hay when the sun was shining

                      • I could not resist writing this post for you..

                        1. Try talk to a mechanic close to your home and tell him that you want to have a complete rebuild.
                        2. Inform that you would sit beside him while the work being carried out.
                        3. Let him look at his calendar and give you a date to complete the job without any interruption.

If you had already tried the above, did not work.. see below:

                        If I were you....

Will split my rebuild into two ( if I'm not getting anyone willing to do in a day's time)

                        1. Engine rebuild (3-4 hrs? - not sure)
                        2. Frame and cycle parts fitting. - This would take -4-5hrs ( approx)

Will ask him to complete the build except the engine. The following day would take spare parts along and have engine work done.

This way he will not have the parts in hand loose.

                        Just my thoughts!

@Aalop - Well, I could do that. There're several pros in this forum who will help me with that. But that makes life easier isn't it? Let's not make it that simpler, instead, I'll use this opportunity to learn, that's much better in long term isn't it? But thanks for your offer.

                            • Life's full of surprises - Sharing my excitement

Well, there're ups & downs in my rebuild of over 6 months. But miracles? Yes, there's indeed one to share; you call an incident miracle only when the incident happens at a time when it is least expected. Let me rewind the day & narrate the experiences as they're worth explaining to understand the pains & passion to understand my joy. I'm no good at narration, scripting, writing or even voccabulary; but let me state the facts straight across as how things went since last Tuesday.

Tuesday - A mech near my home promises (for 3rd time) that he will build my engine on Saturday (3-Jul) sharp 9:30; & thus 3 days passes.

                              Saturday
09:00 - I go to his garage by 09:00 (impatience) & leave my motorcycle. He says he has to attend one urgent work on a front fork of CT100 & he'll start my work by 10:00. I say OK & walk back home.

10:15 - I take all my parts, which are already loaded in car over 2 weeks now (thanks to all the false promises) to his garage only to find he's leaving somewhere. He now gives new appointment -11:30. So I say OK!!!

11:30 - Again I drive my car to his garage; no signs of this guy; I call up this mech & he says, he'll be there in 10 minutes.

12:10 - Still no signs of him & I'm really frustrated ; I've been waiting for over two weeks to get this work done according to his convenience & this is over 3rd or 4th time he has committed on his availability for the work & he's not showing up.

12:15 - I call up a good friend of mine & a member of xBhp & pour out all my frustration to him; he consoles me; what else can he or I do?

12:25 - I'd enough; I drive back home; walk back to garage & ride the motorcycle back home. I'm done with this guy; I fire myself out of this guy.

13:00 - 15:00 - Call up some contacts, catch hold of a new guy through some known acquaintance & I ask if he can do only the engine build for me by tomorrow. The new guys says, he'll call me up by 19:30 to convey if he can accept the job.

16:30 - I examine the motorcycle & keep checking as how I can change the foot rod so that I can change the brake pedal, exhaust & muffler assy. I see the need for few smaller size cotter pins.

17:00 - I go to the usual automobiles spares, he says NO, then another, same answer NO & finally another small time spare parts shop they've stock.

17:30 - Come home & change the old cotter pins on brake rod & rear footrests, somehow I don't feel like working on changing the footrest rod; I turn back & sense some threat; I turn back to see a warning look on my Wifey's face. She wins!!!

18:00 - Had bath followed by dinner & wait for the call from the new guy & kept browsing.

20:00 - Still no call from the new guy & by now, I'm used to frustration.

20:15 - The new guy calls up & says, he's got some personal work on Sunday & he still cannot commit at this point whether he can accept the work or not. If at all he can, he wants me to ride down to his place, deliver the motorcycle & the pile of engine parts; I say NO because...
                              1. I need to ride the motorcycle about 10 Km to his place
                              2. Take a bus down to my place
                              3. Drive my car with all the parts to his place
                              4. He fixes things for me
                              5. I ride the new motorcycle back home
                              6. Take a bus to his place
                              7. Drive down back

Also its difficult to pile up all the parts on the motorcycle & ride it along; I give him a counter offer...
                              1. I'll pay more than his expectation
                              2. I'll provide a door-step pick up & drop
He says he's not sure due to personal work & about the availability of basic tools despite me assuring him about my little collection. He finally says to expect his call by Sunday 09:00 if he should be accepting. I say nothing; the conversation ends

Upto 02:00 - Kept browsing; read workshop manual; parts catalog & what not? Meanwhile the same friend from xBhp calls me up & we kept talking about nothing other than 2 wheels for how long? God & the ISP only knows!!! I now I feel energized & refreshed, felt like I need more patience, I was determined to complete the engine build all by myself. Worst case, I'll seek some good members help here & complete the work all by myself. I think its better to do it all by myself as it will help me to...
                              1. Teach all these uncommitted fellows a lesson
                              2. The joy of building something all by my own
                              3. No more dependencies & end of frustrations & disappointments

                              Sunday
08:20 - I wake up when my Son kicks me for the nth time!!! I brush, browse hazily & wait for breakfast

09:15 - Wifey goes into kitchen to make breakfast; my phone rings, its the new guy's number flashing on mobile; I pick up with little excitement, he asks me, if I could pick him up; YEAH!!! honey's flowing into my ears, excitement in every vein, goose bumps, eye balls popping (are there anything more to describe excitement?)

09:45 - The new guy is at my home (yes 20 Kms done in less than 30 minutes amidst of traffic jams); I move the car out from the shed, make lot of work space & put the motorcycle right in the centre; first thing he does is checking all the available new parts & grouping them accoring to gear, clutch & others. I'm quite happy with this approach. His first report says - missing engine oil seal & bad stock 12V generator.

10:00 - Me & him (read it right, I & him) work together to drain oil, remove head, cylinder, kicker assy & the entire engine is dismanted & engne case is dismounted in lightning speed.

11:15 - Wifey wants to go to a dermatologist for regular check-up; I say NO (obviously) & she's staring; I give up

11:30 - Few more parts that are required are identified, engine oil seal, engine oil, extra cylinder gasket. Meanwhile, one more issue is identified. The stock magneto cannot be fixed because the magnet is small (different thread exists); So we decide upon fitting with the engine existing 6V generator.

11:40 - Wifey is generous to provide lemon juice to both of us ; probably she's contented that I decided to take her to dermatologist

11:50 - Mother pampers us with 3+1 glasses of butter milk; Mother!!!

12:15 - Having dismantled everything, we're now putting things back in place. Engine bearings, crankshaft, gear box all get intact into crankcasing.

12:20 - I'm back from after the first round of shopping; now he says he's missing crank case gasket paste. I run once again. Again, no luck at local shops & I come back empty handed. I sense some threat now, oh!!! its not the mech, its Wifey

12:40 - Wifey & me go towards hospital & ask the mech to have his lunch meanwhile. When coming back, I get an additional spark plug + crank casing paste from a different shop

13:15 - We're back; mech is missing, probably at lunch. I run to table for a quick lunch; some sound at gate, the mech is back; I dismiss the idea for lunch. He's happy with the paste; I start cleaning the frame, remove foot rods, brake pedal & centre stand.

14:40 - He now wants white grease for lubrication; I run out to shop that is almost closing & get one for him

15:00 - We're in need of oil pump oil seal; I call up the spares parts shop & he says he's closed for the day & stepping out. I ask him to stay where ever he's & then rush towards his shop, ask him to open & get the oil pump oil seal.

By now I lost the control on time, all I know is we've put back footrest rod, brake pedal, exhaust pipe, muffler assy, clutch being fitted, 6V magneto, centre stand, kicker assy; meanwhile cylinder is also cleaned up

17:25 - We fit the head on to the cylinder with all the rubbers & there's a hisking sound of that we hear.

17:30 - I mount the gas tank & fit the seats & give first kick; no luck, second kick, no luck, third kick, some grunting, fourth kick, the motorcycle says alive - YEEEEHAAAW!!! the first metal clanging sound from the new exhaust assy, though not sweet, but the moments are!!!

17:50 - I fit in the side stand & the springs

17:58 - Take out for a spin; Waah!!!, the non shaky gear pedals, gentle touch powerful rear brakes, smooth engine & occassional squeaking sound of the new rings, tight clutch, the perfect positions of the foot rests, smooth gear shifts with occasionally tight...and oh!!! what's the smell aah!!! that's a sweet smell; that's the sweet smell one experiences when you ride a motorcycle right out of the showroom after riding for about a Km; the only exception here being, the new motorcycle is ridden right out of my home instead of showroom

18:10 - I ask him also to take a spin & he says everything is intact; he has adjusted the fuel mixture a little rich for sometime now; yeah, its better too.

18:15 - We cleanup the car shed & there's a huge pile of cartons, plastic covers & lots of unused spares as I've bought few of them in excess; I dump them back into my car; all the old parts are put into a oily cover & goes into a carton. I feel something crawling inside my stomach; before I could wonder what it is, I know the answer; I've not had anything other than 3 glasses of butter milk & a glass of lime juice in last 24 hours. So this must be a different hunger; yes, this is the hunger for food, not the hunger for completing the engine job, as it has already been over, the other hunger is striking now!!!

18:30 - I ask him how much he needs & he asks me the standard Y.A.S.S charges; I pay him the charges & a good some in addition; he's happy with the money, my appreciation of his job & with me; I'm happy looking at his happiness. The moment is priceless

19:15 - I'm back home after dropping the new guy at his house; I start the motorcycle & leave it idle while I take bath & dress up. Wifey is angry, disappointed & sad that I haven't had anything; I then switch off the motorcycle to have my first solid food for the day

19:45 - I logon to xBhp, Google this thread & start typing "Well, there're ups & downs..."

Some pics to share with you

Old engine completely being removed from the frame
