    "NH17 Panvel - Pen - Mahad - Poladpur - Khed - Asurde - Chiplun - Savarde - Sangameshwar - Hathkambe(Ratnagiri) - Pali - Lanja - Rajapur - Kharepatan - Kankavali - Kudal - Sawantwadi up to Goa border."

Done this stretch on Feb 1st & 2nd (2012). Found the roads to be in good condition. The stretch as you enter Goa is pure off road for a kilometer or so on account of road widening. But otherwise it is a beautiful stretch.
    Never Give Up.

Updated the first post! And thank you all for sharing!!!

        Some other updates:
NH4 - Uptill Kolhapur is Good to OK. Kolhapur ot Belgaum is excellent. (if you are heading to Bengaluru, then the rare bad batches start at rannebenur. The roads dont have any marking as of Nov 2011

NH17 - The roads are top notch condition from Mumbai till Sawantwadi.
There is a bypass in Kudal which is still work in progress and is a very painfull "short cut" go via Sawantwadi instead.
From Sawantwadi the roads are potholed but can maintain decent speeds.

The diversion from Sawantwadi - Amboli - to Kolhapur (SH 121) is okayish overall, but has construction happening near either ends. The exit towards Kolhapur is a pain

Just did a small ride- 'pune - mahabaleshwar - poladpur - kashedi ghat(on NH17) & back to pune via same route. All roads were in very good condition. Especially the mahabaleshwar - poladpur patch has improved a lot (new layer of tar has been laid on this entire surface) from what it was some months back.

Just saw this thread...back from ratnagiri yesterday..19th Feb..

mumbai-palm-beach road-jnpt-vadkhal naka-mahad-kashedi ghat-poladpur-khed-dapoli-anjarle and back through the same route more than 600kms...

Road conditions too good as mention by some members before me...the roads are new with no spec of gravel or soil even in the ghats...

went to anjarle,dapoli...roads where there always used to be potholes have been filled too...rode back at night and without any rim-bents or crashes

Kashedi ghat is in its best condition now...

The area much prone to land-slides is also clear as of now..

A very good and safe biker not only because he can pop up either of the wheels, scrape his knees on a corner or go fast and make it look stylish but because he very well knows his limits and capabilities and has the patience to learn about others and ride safe ! :)

Came back from a Roadtrip with wifey about a week ago (Jume 16th 2012) - Pune - Kolhapur - Sawantwadi - Panjim and back.
NH4 - Pune to Satara is just okay. Expect bumps and uneven patches.
Satara - Kolhapur - Nipani - Tawandi ghat - Really good road. Can ride in excess of 100 with a pillion and lot of luggage.
Tavandi - Amboli - Sawantwadi ---> Tawandi to MH-K'taka border there are more potholes (some more than 4 inches deep) than actual tarmac. Once within Maharashtra, the road is good (from a state highway perspective). It is a two lane though.
Amboli - Sawantwadi - The ghat is pretty smooth - no road work going on. (One of the guys in Kolhapur had warned me of the ghat being closed.) Also, the roads are well banked.

NH-17---> Sawantwadi - Panjim - Smooth roads. With some truck traffic.

The following roads I have travelled in the past 7 days :

#1 Pune - Ahmednagar (SH60) is 4-lane delight as usual. Hadn't been to this road for quite a while so this time I realize that there is a bypass now to proceed towards Shirdi, this road doesn't go through Ahmednagar.

#2 Ahmednagar - Kopargaon - Shirdi - Manmad (SH10) is partially undivided 2-lane and partially divided 4-lane. Surface of 2 laned road is better than 4 laned roads which are bumpier.

#3 Manmad - Malegaon (SH10) exit on NH3 is undivided 2-lane road. But very good road surface.

#4 Malegaon to Shirpur (NH3) (last MH town towards MP ahead of Dhule) is all boring 4-lane free of any potholes. Shirpur onwards till MP border, 4-laning work is in progress. Beyond this point, 4-lane roads resume.

#5 Shirpur to Nasik (NH3): This is also boring 4-lane awesomeness till Chandwad (exit for Manmad) on NH3. You get a beautiful ghat section somewhere in between Malegaon and Chandwad which I was too busy enjoying to remember the name. From Chandwad till Ojhar and a bit beyond, the road has been 6-laned all the way till the point where the flyover construction is going on in Nasik. Don't get too scared of the flyover construction. Stay off the service lane and on the road exactly below the flyover wherever possible and you shall keep making swift progress.

#6 Nasik to Trimbakeshwar : Scenic as usual, good road surface. Very less potholes. 99% undivided 2 lanes. 1% divided 4-lane.

#7 Trimbakeshwar - Wada - Kasara uphill ghat (Unmarked road, not on the map) : This is the place you reach if you take a right instead of a left at the only *major* T-junction when going towards Vaitarna from Trimbakeshwar. The left takes you to Vaitarna Dam while the right takes you to Kasara / Igatpuri. Road surface is rough though the no. of potholes are not very high. About 9km before reaching Kasara, they are making quite a long and expensive bridge in the middle of a jungle with practically zero traffic (I hardly saw 1 car every 15 minutes). The entire road is 1.5 lane non highway road, but extremely scenic.

#8 Kasara uphill Ghat to Nasik (NH3) : 2-lane one-way ghat, immaculate road surface, zero potholes. Soon after the ghat ends, the road becomes 6-lane all the way till Nasik, about 50odd km away. The road remains 6-lane till you get off the newly opened section of the partially completed Nasik NH3 flyover. Refer #5 on how to negotiate Nasik 'flyover under construction' traffic.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

I had been there before monsoons and it was not so good. So its anyone's guess how it would be now.
But its very scenic. If want to beauty of nature then go fot it.

if it's an OT. apologies mods
                              Guys need a small help.
Can any of the riders confirm this.
while going to (old highway NH4) mumbai from pune we need to take the expressway after lonavla for about 5-6 kms till khopoli exit and while coming back, after the khopoli ghat ends we need to again go on expressway till lonavla exit 6-7 odd kms.
Is this correct route? . Because last time when I had done pune-mumbai-pune i had taken the same route and frankly was skeptical to ride on expressway. Also there were no two wheelers on the expressway stretch so I was scared because I didn't want to jeopardise my ride if some traffic police caught me.
Expecting replies soon because I'll be again going to Mumbai this weekend.

To all those how-to-run-in-the-bike-oh-it's-so-confusing. Here's an advice.

Route is absolutely correct. Old highway and E-Way merge on that ghat + tunnel stretch. There might be an alternate route but that will not be a National Highway. As long as you stick to the slow/middle lane, I doubt riding on the E-Way is dangerous. Just stay totally away from the rightmost lane unless and until there is a traffic jam.
