  • Advice required for buying motorcycle, touring gears and tools

    Hi all,

I have been riding motorcycles for 11 years now. But i've never invested in riding gear or touring bags before. The only two gears i've invested in are helmets and riding gloves.

    I have a 2012 Bajaj Avenger 220.

I have started fuelling the tourer in me, but many problems with the luggage handling have brought me to the point where I need to invest in good touring gears, namely:

    Saddle bags
    Tail bags
    Tank bags

For the saddle bags and tail bags, i think dirtsack is a pretty good brand and they have nice variety too. Although, here also, which one to choose is a big problem.

For the tank bag, i am confused between nh4motorhead and dirtsack.

I am also considering the claw style of bags either from via terra or dirtsack, but dont have much idea as to the usage and items i will be carrying.

PS - all the touring gear, put together, would most probably be used for the leh ladakh trip i am planning for, so pointers and tips on the amount of luggage I would require would also help me in zeroing in on the appropriate luggage.

Also, what kind of trips would actually require all the three types of bags?

Thanks in advance for the help as i am asking for a lot of advice here.

I can give you some basic info.

For a short ride (1-2 days), you should be fine with a tank bag plus small tail bag combo or even a backpack with bungees (primitive but inexpensive). The idea of the tail bag/backpack bungee combo is not to stress your back. Tail bag would be a more sophisticated way of carrying luggage. Both work.
There are small and large tail bags available. Choose based on seat and bike type.

If you are looking at carrying a pillion, tailbags are not usable. You need to think of saddlebags. Your bike is a cruiser so straight exhaust type saddles work.
Tank bag stays on for all easy access items, long ride or short.

For a trip like Leh, you would need all the luggage you could carry.
Which means, tank bag + tail bag + saddle bags.
Or, 'taddle' bags like the ViaTerra Claw. You cannot and need not use saddle bags with the Claw on. Great quality, but a bit tough to carry around.
Rynox also has a large tail bag called the Hawk, and it allows for saddle bags to be tied too.
Larger in terms of capacity, probably.
But looks like a duffel bag (same for Dirtsack)

End of the day, you need to browse and decide which brand or product, based on your bike type and budget. Reviews here are highly helpful.
I personally think ViaTerra is the best of the lot in terms of innovation and quality. But I haven't actually used any other brands. And I'm from Hyderabad.

I guess you won't go wrong with any of the brands mentioned.

I am not very confident about tail bags. Actually I don't know how to climb my bike with one on it

One major design drawback of the Dirtsack KTM/Speedbag Saddlebags is that they open up from the sides... making it almost impossible to open the bags on the move.

The ViaTerra Velox opens from the top.. making accessing the stuff inside the bag possible while mounted on the bike. The Velox also uses the rear footpeg stays of the KTM 200/390 Duke/RC intelligently allowing intelligent use of design.

Word of Advice: DO NOT Just Go by the LITRES mentioned on the site/specs. There is no regulation body checking the capacity of saddlebags

                          Hello Friends,

I just did a 550 km trip with Rynox Nomad saddle bad , Dirtsack tailbag and rynox optimus s tank bag on my duke 390. I didnt feel any issue riding the bike and the bike was really stable and agile. Only thing i noticed was the top speed was limited 138 kmph ( because of the weight may be ) other than that its fine. Attaching few pics. Just thought of sharing my view.

                          Thanks
                          Peeths

Edited :- while coming from the same trip and with more items on the bags, I was able to hit 160 kmph. So there is no issue with weight on the bike.

Between viaterra fly gt and dirtsack racepack, which is better? They have a price difference of 500₹. Any other tank bag in the same range?
