  • Re: Choosing a Royal Enfield? Ask here...

    Hi Guys,

I stay in Gurgaon and have made up mind for RE.

I'm very confused between Standard 350, Classic 350, Electra and TB 350
My ideal usage is only on weekends (touring/long rides) and would like
to have a bike that suits my requirement.

I'm going to book it in this month itself. Your expertise will be highly appreciated.

Mate.. all the bikes you have mentioned are perfect for long rides.. i kinda have a feeling that the TBS will be more comfy thanks to the extra cushion on its seat.. also not to forget a large bucket kimda seat so i would suggest the TBS here..

But if you want looks then go for the Classic 350..

If you just want the standard old bullet feel.. then the standard it is..

Otherwise all of them are cool on the highways

What is the better thing to when going for a used Bullet? Get a recent Bullet with lesser kms or an older one with more kms? Since I have heard that the older ones have better engine builds

The earlier Bulls had CI engines which later transformed into AVL and then UCE. The CI had better thumps but had other issues. The recent ones have a lesser likeable thump???

I think in the first reply to you I had mentioned about the three engines in a little detail, had mentioned about the thump thing too. CI thump the best and reason is not only cast iron engine for that, another reason is peak torque achieved at very less RPM. 1200 rpm less than UCE but that doesn't mean uce does not thump, they do thump, just change the silencer but the space between beats would be a little less. But UCE is the most reliable and aluminum engines are less prone to wear and tear so more long lasting too

Yeah. I know. Hence the dilemma. Newer(2005 onwards) or older(pre-2000)? I don't think life of the Bull will be an issue

See if you CI engine feel, less reviving, thumping, relaxed riding, fewer gear shifts and vintage feel then nothing matches CI bullet but then be ready to compromise on mileage, pickup, top speed, accelaration and be ready for some regular maintenance work and niggling issues . If you don't want to compromise on this things yet want to thump along, go for UCE. And yes Bull engine life is not big issue in either case else there would not have been models from 50s, 60s thumping majestically on roads.

True that.. I was in similar dilemma like you but ended up choosing UCE.. You will be much happier, but for the thump you need to wait for the run-in to be over. Having said that, the real bullet thump will be missed always with whatever silencer you could get for UCE, but that's the decision you need to make.. Whenever i had a CI bullet thump, my head turns to have a look at that bullet

                        All the best.

                        • Re: Choosing a Royal Enfield? Ask here...

After almost a year, i am planning to bring back a RE home. I have shortlisted the Standard 500. RE's were part of family, started with TB 350 in 2006, clocked 80k kms till 2010. Had to part with it due to unavoidable circumstances. Bought the CL 500 in Dec 2011, clocked 25K till Dec 2012. I think it was sometime during Jan this year i noticed the fuel pipe with cracks, replaced the fuel pipe. Within a days time the crank pin broke, since i had already exceeded 10K kms warranty on the bike had expired. Fixed the issue and sold it. Moved on from REs and bought Duke 200. During these 10 months relationship with the 200 I have thoroughly enjoyed the riding experience - good, bad as well as ugly.

Purpose of shortlisting the Standard 500 -
                          1) retro looks
                          2) carb
                          3) rider and pillion seating comfort

                          I can live with the small niggles, the FE, weight, braking etc etc. I have a few questions;
                          1) can the rear wheel be changed from 18 inch to 19 inch, is it a direct fit or should there be any modifications done to the swing-arm in order to fit the 19 inch?
                          2) rear tail lamp, would like to know if it can be swapped to the one on Standard 350. RE has thrown the classic rear tail lamp assembly on the Standard 500. I personally don't like it.

I will be visiting the showroom sometime today and book it, wish me luck

                          Cheers!!
