  • From what I had read on other forums :

1.) Route from Pune -- Loanavala -- Kopoli --Pen : Is fine
2.) Pen -- Alibaug -- Kashid : Uneven bumpy roads , yet manageable.
    3.) Diveagar -- Mahasala -- Mangaon : Ok , but manageable.
    4.) Mangaon -- Vile -- Tahmini Base : Super
5.) Tahmini : They have laid the tarmac only at a few portions of ghat the last time we visited at the start of monsoons. Rest of sections is a royal screw up all the way till mulshi !

Just a suggestion , if you are going till diveagar why miss the famous scenic stretch from diveagar to shirvardhan. Also road all the way from shrivardhan till mahsala is good . If you want some more spice try , diveagar -- shrivardhan -- goregoan--poladpur --mahabi--pune. Its longer but very scenic ! Poladpur -- mahabi stretch had some good tarmacs last time we visited. Hopefully you are not planning all this in one day

    Cheers,
    Pai

P.S All the data is with respect to rides done pre - monsoon. Post monsoon I have not been on a single ride.

    EDIT :

Just read it would be your first ride on your new bike. My suggestion would be , leave pune early in the morning cover lonavala & enjoy a lazy bum ride to kashid till late noon. Have lunch at patil khanavali & reach diveagar for evening. Settle down there for the night. Next day early morning have a visit to ganpati temple in diveagar , continue till shrivardhan -- goregaon -- poladpur -- mahabi & back to pune by early evening.

can anybody tell about the roads on this route
and what all things should a get ready with before leaving......
hi when are you planning on a ride? if on this sunday, one day return ride, i wld like to ride with you.

        • Road from Pune till Pen is superb, but after Pen till Kashid it is filled with many long bad patches. From Kashid till Murud road is comparatively better.
          I believe I can fly...

No idea much about routes on MSH4 post shrivardhan. Just check & synchronize your timings as per ferry timings at some points (Jaigad jetty for ex.) . You could check with phanikar from bangalore , he had recently ridden on that route (If i am not mistaken) .

Just a suggestion avoid NH17 for return , rather take NH4 if traveling alone for first time ! I may sound "daddyish" here , but NH17 really aint a safe route especially while returns when you would be speeding up your way to pune & fatigue would be taking its toll to the maximum. If visiting till tarkarli take MSH4 all the way , you would travel through the konkan circuit & for return plan to hit NH4 via sawantvadi -- amboli -- nippani -- kolhapur -- pune . Another important thing is do not venture to unknown waters , now a days the virgin beaches along konkan are being known for strong underwater current that will suck you down even if you are a good swimmer .

I aint scaring you buddy . If you are riding for first time on a long distance tour , I would suggest to take by bits and pieces. Rather than traveling all around solo. Get to know your bike well first , go on smaller tours of smaller distances . MSH4 should be a breeze , but traveling after dark may be a problem owing to route & road conditions. I personally do not suggest NH17 solo to any one who has not ridden on that route before ( Some may say its normal route , scenic etc. But I say based only on my personal experience )

Try to see if you can hook up with someone for the tour If going solo , I would suggest the following :

                      Day 01 : Pune -- lonavala -- khopoli -- pen -- kashid -- murud -- janjiri -- diveagar
                      Day 02 : Diveagar -- shrivardhan -- goregaon -- poladpur -- mahabi -- pune

I am not against driving long. In fact I do not even have much experience of touring on bike .

                      Cheers,
