LOL! But the sad part is, to go to some of the best places in Maharashtra we have to go via that road. On a bike the road is fun albeit risky. Make sure you ride only in daylight over there. At night everyone goes crazy on that road. Some of the worst accidents have taken place on that road.
The scenic beauty that the road has to offer is worth all the pain.

+1, really good road to ride. few years back NH17 was voted one of the top three best driving roads in india in 'Overdrive' or 'Autocar'

but once the night falls, the reckless truck drivers make it a death trap.

Has anyone recently been on the NH17 recently. I would like to know the condition of the road. I know the patch near Pen area is filled with potholes. I'm planning to do a Mumbai-Goa this weekend and knowing the conditions of the road would help me be prepared.

Worst Patches on NH17:
Pen - Wadkhal
Mahad - Poladpur
Just after Sangmeshwar (~8-9 Kms is the worst of all)

Best Patches on NH17:
Nagothane - Mahad
After the ~8-9 Kms of Sangmeshwar worst patch the road is awesome till Hathkhamba.

No idea about the situation after Hathkhamba.

Flak alert!

I might face flak for this, but its a genuine issue. Do you guys wear gloves during normal city rides to office/malls/theatre etc? I usually don't want to carry a bag with me, and I hook up my helmet to the helmet holder provided by the bike but can't fit the gloves under the seat. So wondering what you guys do or do you avoid the hassle altogether?

I have a FZ which is cursed with minimal under seat storage for nothing other than your bike papers.

okay ... ... actually wanna cruise more ... like beyond 200 km ( one side ) ...

and i dont wanna go to nh17 had very bad experience

we went to alibaug in a car n it took us more then 4 hrs to reach alibaug ... and it wasnt a weekend ... and that single lane road with potholes ....

hey bhimashankar is really nice desination...450km ride from dombivli....there is a live thread in the tourer section by some other xbhpian if u want to see whether it is worth..and roads are NH222 & NH4,so u can actually 'cruize'...

Thanks a ton for this road update RAK. Can someone please suggest the best route to Ganpati Pule from NH17. Is Nivali Phata - Karabude - Jakadevi - Chafe - GP a good route ??

I guess it would be a good practice for all of us to update the road conditions after all our long/short road trips. It will help others to plan out their ride more effectively. On similar lines I would like to update you with some of the roads which I took yesterday.

Ghansoli - MIDC pipeline road - Shil Phata => Bad road

Shil Phata - Nilaje - Ambarnath => OK road with occasional bad stretches

Ambarnath - Badlapur West - Jambhul Naka => One of the worse roads ever seen especially from Ambarnath to Badlapur West where in some stretches the road disappears under mud and carpet of potholes.

Jambhul Naka - Lotus Pond - Barvi Dam - Murbad => Best road condition. Its narrow road cutting through green plains initially and then a thick forest with some very good corners. A highly recommended stretch for all the bikers.

Murbad - Malshej Ghat - Monica Chowk (Otur) => Its NH222 (w/o divider) which is in good shape with occasional bad stretches. Not recommended for cornering junkies as currently the ghat roads are slippery with some potholes and gravel.

Otur - Ozhar - Narayangaon => Good road with very few bad stretches but best in terms of view you get to see. Mostly you will come across vast farms on either sides stretching till horizon. Yesterday the combination of sun, blue sky and clouds offered an enchanting view specially near Ozhar. We did visit GMRT's W-04 Antenna on our way to Narayangaon which involves a bit off-roading in the adjoining farms. Highly recommended for landscape photographers.

Narayangaon - Chakan => Its NH50 (w/o divider) which is in very good shape except for some stretches where it cuts through some towns like Khed. But Khed - Chakan is a very smooth toll road with divider and 2 lanes on either side.

Chakan - Talegaon => Good road with very nice landscapes. Only the Talegaon section is bad where the road narrows down and has lot of traffic with potholes.

Talegaon - Lonavala - Khopoli - Panvel => Its NH4 which is one of the best NH to ride on. One can easily touch 90-100 in most of the stretches.

Panvel - JNPT - Palm Beach - Vashi => Very good road all along. Recommended for road rippers.
