Thanks for your inputs, could you also tell me if it is safe to ride during nights on this route?
Because i am planning to start on 19th March @ around 9 pm from pune.

            Ride Safe
I think others have given a pretty good description of the road conditions already. On the night-driving part just wanted to let everyone know a very recent (yesterday) experience I had on the Pune-Bangalore highway. Was taking the Airavath to Mumbai and there was a huge block on the highway for about 1.5 hours because of a truck hit and run case. The villagers were enraged and highway was opened only after police intervention. Even then our bus got hit with stones as we passed and the Emergency Exit glass pane cracked. I believe these windows are purposely a little weaker so they can be easily broken to get out in an emergency. But a little scary nonetheless!

So like MAXzma pointed out, just be careful of passing through villages at night. Nothing to worry if all goes well but a lot of dirty trouble if something goes wrong! Oh and on the bus thing, I would say VRL or KSRTC are good. On a recent trip, VRL was awesome - absolutely bang on time!

Last Sunday me and @Divya Sharan had gone to Kanva Reservoir for a leisurely ride to catch the sunrise. As it turns out we did quite a bit of off roading and captured some of it on video.

                      • Planning to go to Halebidu this weekend, all suggestions are appreciated.
I want this to be a one-day jaunt. Would like to cover Halebeedu, Belur and our monolithic Bahubali(Shravanbelagola), so which of these places woud be good to visit in the early morning and which ones would be in the evening??
The only camera i got is iphone, would it be allowed?

Perfectly doable. Leave early morning and get to Belur, check out Halebeedu, Have lunch at Hassan and ride down to Shravanabelagola. You can be back in Bangalore by evening even if you ride relaxed. The highway is super smooth now.

                          Pictures are allowed.

Camera is fine everywhere, no worries.

Last I went the road between Halebeedu & Hassan wasn't in the best condition, rideable but quite pot holed. Hassan-BGLR highway is pretty good.

Also I would suggest the opposite. Cover Shravanabelagola first thing in the morning. Reason being that you have to climb up the monolithic rock to reach the temple complex. That rock will get hot as an oven in the afternoon. Even once on top there are a few things to explore and see, that will get difficult in the afternoon heat with a red hot rock under the feet.

You can cover Shravanabelagola in the morning, go to Belur, and then go to Halebeedu, have lunch either at Belur or Halebeedu, neither have good options AFAIK. The inside of Halebeedu Temple is extremely cool and the stone is cold to touch. It is very relaxing and calming to sit there in the cold away from the afternoon heat and you can have a good stop there before you make your way back. So this would be my advise.

                              .
This plan does sound to be good. What kinda places are there to explore once on the hill and how early are the gates open to go up?
Should i consider a guide in Belur or Halebeedu? how much could i bargain for dont want them to take me for a ride, on this planned ride.

Well actually apart from the temple complex itself there are some engraving or footprint kind of thing on the stone protected by glass I think and just the general area around the complex for taking pics and stuff. Nothing really substantial as such but still something that won't be very enjoyable on hot rock. Not sure about the opening times. Maybe someone else can pitch in.

Guide is up to you! Having been there twice I haven't taken the guide either time. And I think govt. appointed guides have kind of standard rate so I don't think you will get ripped off if you pay at counter/get a receipt. Also generally one guide will take around a whole bunch of people & you can forget relaxing. If you want a guide just for yourself & family then that might be charged extra. However at both Belur & Halebeedu there are some guys who sell booklets about the history of these places. I had bought one of such booklet for Rs30/- when I first went there. That sufficed for then.

Having said that the guides are total professionals, they know their subject in detail and will give you a heavy dose of history. I personally really like that stuff and have decided that the next time I go (if I ever go there again) I will definitely hire a guide!
