  • Re: Duke 390: Long Term Ride Review

I will still say there should be a better way to deal with those situations. There's no guarantee that even with this RPM restriction a motorcycle can't have a bad run-in. Riding at 7500rpm in 1st or 2nd gear isn't same as riding at 7500rpm at 5th or 6th gear. I can continuously rip my motorcycle till 7500rpm in 1st/2nd gear and mess up the whole run-in thing.

If this is the reason a showroom is going to give then it's bad.

Theres no guarantee for anything. Trust me even if you rip Duke at 7500 rpm in 1st and 2nd, the engine wont break a sweat. It is hard to break this engine no matter what you do. By limiting the revs Bajaj is just trying to take precautionary measure, some may like it some may not.

I understand taking precautions and that is what run-in instructions are there for. I just do not understand that forcing the rider to not use anything above 7500rpm is any good way to do it.

What I would like to know is, will the showroom oblige if the owner ask them to not set any such rpm restriction while taking the delivery? If yes, then it is OK.

Nope, they wont oblige you. After the 1st free service they will set it further, and after 3rd service you are a free bird. Limiting in a way will bring down warranty related claims for Bajaj.

Hmm, thanks @chinmayakar. This is just arrogance in my opinion on Bajaj's part. I don't feel good about it.

For some reason they did not restrict it in my bike and once to check I ripped it till 10000 and it was fine.

I think this argument is futile. No harm in taking precautions. There will be many buyers who do not care much about run in or dont know. Unless you wanted to do a motoman no reason to worry.

This is what I know - the SHIFT light is set to 7500 rpm. BUT, the rev limiter is not at the same rpm. It still revs to 10500 rpm right from factory. And this is true for ALL Duke 390s.

I am not sure how this rumor turned into fact! If any OWNER has info to the contrary, please correct me.

You are absolutely right. 7500rpm is just indicative but not limited. We can set two Shift RPM indicators. Below photos from manual will help clarifying the doubts.
I havent crossed 5500rpm till now though.

Right, that is how it works. Didn't bring that up as someone said this rev limiter was not shift indicator. It is like a myth. Some people agree it is just the shift limiter, which I too agree, however, there are some who think apart from that there is also a rev limiter which is reset every time you give your bike for service, uptil 3rd free service.

                              Hello folks,
I'm from Kolkata and I'm supposed to get my bike delivered this week.

                              A few suggestions and queries,
                              1. I am planning to flush out the engine oil after 100km or so and put 20W40 Motul 3000 4T mineral oil and use the same till first servicing. Anyone else has done that?
                              2. Are the tire huggers really useful? I don't like them. I am wondering if removing them along with the Saari guard will be a wise decision.

                                1. While flushing out oil after 100km seems like a good idea, but why would you want to deviate from the factory recommended oil. How have your arrived at 20w40. Any specific reasons why you want this specific oil instead of ktm recommended. Also I might be wrong but I do recall reading somewhere that for running in synthetic oils are better, but this is unsubstantiated.
                                2. You can remove it now that the rains are over, else there is a good chance that the mud will be splattered all over your shirt.
