Also I might be wrong but I do recall reading somewhere that for running in synthetic oils are better, but this is unsubstantiated.

Manufacturer recommendations always come with considerations to total cost of ownership. If you want to maintain it in any better way, you are always welcome. The concept of flushing oil at 100K is quite understandable because it is within this first 100K that the most metal debris is shaved off and in the oil.

As far as different brand of oil is concerned, it should not be a problem at all as long as the grade is the same or has a lower end viscous point but never should go for a higher end viscous point. Eg: If 20W50 is recommended, you can use 10W50 but never should use 10W40 or 20W40 because the 50 is the grading for the higher temp vicouscity. Coming to synthetic oils. From what I have undetsood reading various sources is that for Wet Clutch boxes, it is never recommended to have synthetic simply because it might end up slipping the clutch due to the extermely fine/smooth nature of synthetic. Mineral oils have enough abrasive mineral particles in them that they niether harm nor slip but provide the requisite lubrication. An oil is supposed to aid in engine break-in by letting the components shave some metal debris off each other so that they fit perfectly and work harmoniously. Synthetic oil during break-in period is "khud ke pair me khulati marna"

So does it come with synthetic oil or mineral oil from the company?? And what if i just ask the service guys to change the oil after 100kms, without me buying any particular oil?

        Thanks for your reply Atul.
I'm sorry, I meant 20W50 instead of 20W40. Basically, instead of a fully synthetic oil, I wanted to keep a mineral oil till the first servicing. The basic difference between a mineral and synthetic oil, in my understanding is, a mineral oil looses it's viscosity at a lesser km than the synthetic oil. Since I need to undergo an oil change at 1000km, basically I will be using this oil for 900km or so. Hence I think mineral oil should do fine. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
        Thanks.

Thanks for sharing this. I have been always used mineral oil in my ZMA. I used to change the oil at 1500km or so. Never got any trouble. I was thinking to the same for the 390 but the question is if the service guys will hear me and allow me to put mineral during first servicing.

I'm also saying go Mineral. Are you saying tha the bike is coming with synthetic oil? I doubt so, it should by default be mineral oil and also the service time, they will be using mineral. You do not have to worry about loosing viscousity with mineral oil. It can perform exceptionally well upto 6K as long as you have right grade and a good break-in where the engine doesn't burn the oil.

No. It's coming with synthetic oil and at the service time they are using synthetic!

Dealer received only 7 bike, I will take delivery in October because according to Hindu Religion we are not suppose to buy anything during sharads, and sharads are upto 4th october.. (totally crap, but have to convince to family too)

Anyone done temporary registration for their 390 duke? My residential address falls outside of kolkata, hence I need to do temporary registration to take the bike out of the showroom. The showroom guys are asking for 3000 Rs when I think the Govt. takes only 200 Rs for temporary registration! This is daylight robbery! They used to charge 1500 Rs for Duke 200 whereas Govt. charges 190 Rs for the same!
Whereas KTM is promising to do it within Rs 800 and KTM Kharagpore at Rs 500 INR. Wah! KTM Kolkata!
