They are called breather tubes and some have also drainage tubes. If you see them, it's better to leave them as it is. Check the respective service manual to make sure there are tubes that are affixed to those nipples, like drainage tank breather tubes.

    Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

Guys, how sturdy and well built are the alloys and fairing? I am scared to take out mine in Pune roads and the craters they have. To tackle those Mars like terrain, I can happily take out my P220.

Until you ride over a boulder at high speed or hit something the alloys won't break or buckle. They are sturdy. My front ally lasted for 1.2 lakh kms and cracked when i ran over a boulder at 100 km[ph. Rear had seen all sorts of abuse and still intact.

That's encouraging. I had hit some uneven roads and thought that the tyre lost pressure. I did get it filled and have kept it on rest. Taking my 220 for office and daily duties till I can confirm if the alloy is bent and leaking air. But signs are confident that alloys are of really good quality.

I rode solo from Bangalore all the way to Spiti last year. If you haven't been there do watch some videos on how the roads are. After a point, I ignored smaller rocks and rode roughshod over them. Let alone the rims, I did not even have to service the cone set. Stop worrying about the rims, they are built to endure, of course, like everything metallic, no one can guarantee what a particular impact may do to a wheel.

So, after a quick oil top up i tried redlining it to see if it smokes and sure enough black/grey smoke blasted out. Now this was a hot engine after 20 kms of ride.
But when i redlined it the second and third time, no smoke.
                What does it mean ?

If oil is getting consumed and smoke is there at high rpms then it doesn't matter what gear you are in, your bore piston assembly is screwed up. Check those out. No other way.

I know that. But what i wanted to know was why there's no smoke when i redlined 2nd and 3rd time.
Btw every engine consumes oil and some oil is evaporated over time. So bit less oil always doesnt necessarily mean a busted bore and piston.
But thank you for your input anyway.

                    Cheers

Oh so your bike consumes oil and smokes but still you say that's normal. Wow ..

Read the first line of my reply. "If your bike smokes and consumes oil". That should be pretty self explanatory. If I remember you asked about oil depletion issues some months back. There you agreed to run it as it is with top ups instead of opening the engine and inspecting it. Now you say your bike is smoking. Any one with a bit of knowledge will say what I said.
Why generalize the scenario? All engines for consume oil but as a yardstick if they start smoking then engine is done for.

You missed one thing in first post. I said it smoked only one time and 2nd and 3rd time there was no smoke. A busted engine will always smoke at redline.

Brother. Give it a thorough check once. It has been long since the bike is drinking oil. Now it's even smoking which is a big red signal. Get it checked once. You will have peace of mind.
