I guess the carb is not set properly. Take it to a good mechanic who knows how to tune carbs, or better yet, do it yourself.

bike jumps and shut down when put in 1st gear after a gap of 10-12 hours or more.
            ^^
This is a common issue. I dont know the solution to this but there is a workaround. Hold the clutch and give a few 'empty' kicks. Then start the bike. The jumping stops

Hello all. Thanks for replying. I will try to post the photos of spark plug tomorrow. Btw what does tuning carb mean?

relax brother there is no biggie of all wht u mentioned

1 tighten chain, keep it lubricated, keep OKS chain spray with u and religiously follow it
2 about jerk, it happens cos this bike has high torque for the given cc, hence it jerks if u dont use it for around 7 to 12 hrs as u said, when u strt ur bike after long haul just zero throtle, engage full clutch and slowly move to first gear.., it will help
3 its nothing but rpm adjustment, and since this is ur first oil change bike take time to adjust, it will improve gradually...

I dont understand how it will gradually improve, considering it is giving me 30 kpl mileage!! and correct me if i am wrong, rpm idling adjustment can be done by that little screw near the carb area right? dont know what he did with machine then.

                  ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

ok here are the conditions in which I ride:
                  - Gears -- 1st till 10, 2nd till 20-23, 3rd till 30-33, 4th till 40
                  - max speed 50
                  - ocassional speed bursts till 60 kph. Might have done not more than 7-8 times
                  - ride 5th gear most of time. even when speed is about 20-25. but that hardly ever happens.

From the way I see it, it's only me who is getting this low average. Some people have reported 60+ average, looks like a dream to me
I dont trust bajaj mechanics at all now. Shall I take the bike to the local mechanic? Maybe they can better assess the problem

Can you try changing your petrol bunk. We already had 1 person on this thread report good mileage after changing his regular bunk. Sometimes nothing is wrong with the bike, just the qty and quality of fuel is suspect. Also check if your breaks are jammed. Your tyres should be rotating freely atleast 3 or 4 full circles.

He probably used a digital tachometer as 125ST doesn't have a tachometer. He set the idle speed but AFAIK the the AFR settings affects mileage more. Close the AFR screw till it's mildly tight (don't try to tighten it like a nut), count how many turns you had from the current position till the nut is tightened. Now loosen the screw till you get a good air fuel ratio, should be around 3 1/2 turn, not sure though as I'm not familiar with Discover 125ST, it'd be great if somebody posts the factory position of the AFR screw.

Air fuel ratio screw. The screw on the carb that controls the ratio of the air and fuel entering the combustion chamber. Start from here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carburetor BTW are you sure you are calculating mileage properly through the reserve to reserve method?

So 100/90-17 tyres fits on stock rims.. Did you remove the rear mudgaurd due to new tyre size or removed due to style ?? BTW what tyre is it ??

Cleaner and your mechanic is right that the AFR settings affect the mileage. The mechanic probably inspected the colour of the wire after running the engine in idle. Depending on whether the AFR is a richer mix (more fuel) or lean (more air), the colours will be different. But note that all bikes don't have the same AFR settings. Running with a AFR setting which is too lean will improve mileage, but will damage your engine by over-heating it. This is because the flame spreads to all corners of the combustion chamber and damages parts which are not tolerant to high temperatures. Running too rich will not harm the engine, but will cost you more fuel.
