  • Well of-course this bike is brilliant in a lot of ways, but it does bring a flip-side of having such a lonf lasting machine, you just can't get rid of it...

This thing lasts sooooooo long that you try to do some wild mods to make it die soon, so that it goes and something new and fun comes in, but damm it just doesn't let go...

On the other hand, its soo easily maneuverable as well as planted on the road with excellent brakes that you don't ever like to compare its goodwill with current new-gen machines...

Having a long lasting bore is one thing, but having soo much of extra bang for the buck is i guess more important feature of this bike.
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.

same problems here, sort of trying to get over "why fix something that ain't broken!"
part , but during my student and early employment days this reliability really helped.
      now the age shows .
      Rip crazy 30 kmpl
      sane riding 45kmpl.

actually both me and my wife are fond of this bike . my present wife being my ex- girlfriend
the final plan is to restore and keep this as my " service bike"(with our servicing habits spoilt , we will need a service bike just to ensure that our next new gen bikes go to A.S.S on time )
cheers! ( damn! both petrol and booze got costly!)

Well, shogun surely flew to 100 kmph in no time. But,not me, ZEN folks themselves say that a stock fiero used to catch up with a stock shogun within the quarter mile drag(1 bike length) and then overtake it on top-end if the stretch/race had a longer stretch. This bike has beaten the 2 strokes in all kinda races ,right from himalayan rallies to dirt and track events. This really is a modest looking champion bike.

You might give it a try by going to hosur itself. But seriously, going for the stock CDI when TCI is available for 1/3 it's price makes no sense to me.

my dad's reply - japanese and russian over engineered! european , fit for purpose.!
with the design life being 1L km guess japanese tech lasts longer. btw I lied earlier my odo is 84k over 1 L km.
to think that my stock bore lasted 1.3L km ! bludy this is a beast!

Well fiero is over-engineered because it has been designed with upgrades in mind, think about it,this engine had a oil-cooler addition designed into it,as well as a crank and reciprocating parts which can take the increase in cc's and compression which were planned when the cylinder was designed.
The fiero was designed to be a race track tool as well as being a all-rounder.The credit should go to both SUZUKI and TVS here i think, because TVS were into racing big-time and i'm sure they gave the brief as to what they needed in the design. Were as at that time they could have made it into a single purpose engine to match the 4S requirements of that time.

Get her upgraded to 180 with the RTR bore-kit etc. Then you and your wife both will still continue to enjoy this bike as a rugged, reliable, all weather, everyday bike.Which might bring back the memories of, when your wife was your gf.

Buddy, what you need is a good mech to diagnose the oil-drinking issue. The set up you have should have no issues what so ever! and right now you should have been ripping her by revving her to 10k and back.Just look at the number of bikes on this thread itself which are on RTR bore kit and they will last like anything with serious abuse as well.
The RTR/big-bore modification is nothing new and it's been done since a long time now.I feel bad that your bike's drinking oil and oil level getting low will kill any engine no matter how well it might have been designed. Then your bike's bore's survival is nothing short of a miracle ,as you've told that earlier when oil was drained out that it used to be nothing more than a couple hundred mls .I am glad that you're topping it up regularly. But seriously,if you leave the alternator mod apart, your bike should have been as good as new and with a performance to match as well and you'd not even be contemplating about killing it.

Best engine during its days.. But needs some make up to keep up with the generation current bikes.. Regarding your problems, there might have been something wrong while installation(Which is a direct fit though).. Get it sorted.. If possible, rebore..

Stock fiero can catch an RX100, but not the mighty GUNS and 135 5s.. By the time stock fiero riders shift to third gear, gun rider would have shifted to fifth.. i have ridden a excellent condition stock shogun and believe me, its a killer.. It made me to think "Do not mess with the boss"..
I do agree its an all rounder because the engine has a very strong and powerful LOWER PART.. Stock upper parts are bone reliable, making it an awesome power commuter..

Its truly a downgraded version in India.. Its crank and gears can take a lot of hard beating than any other bike in India..

You obviously don't know about ZEN TVS and what their experience in racing has been. They are not the kinda folks who would talk from the top of their hats.Since a few years they have stopped competing, but they still prepare bikes for rallies and races. Now Mr Murthy has left ZEN TVS and you should talk to people who have been associated with them.

I don't know much about Zen tvs buddy, but i really know about the potential of Fieros and Shoguns very well.. 2 strokes are always the king in drag races and stock
shogun=14bhp @ 8500 rpm, lighter than stock fiero, 5 speed, More p:w ratio...
                Stock Fiero=12bhp @ 7500rpm, heavier than Shogun, 4 speed, less P:W..

BTW, I would be the most happiest person if stock Fiero is better than stock Shogun..... But i can't be partial since i own it..

Well buddy,ZEN TVS has owned and competed with all the bikes that ever came out of a TVS production line which were worthy of racing on.The shogun came with 4 cogs and the shogun shadow never went into production.I don't even want to get into talk of gear ratios etc. They have been there and done that.Mr Murthy is someone who's very passionate about racing and he's not someone who is flippant about it.Among his group of friends are Joel Joe,Venugopal,Srinivas and Shekar Bhojanna of Pacer Yamaha.

Edit:Forgot to mention the TVS racing team folks are also among his friends.Which along with other things, i think means he's seen a few races.

                    • A small excerpt from the above given link.

"Prakruthi has registered a claim for The Great Indian Trail Blaze as an All India Bike Expedition in The Limca Book of Records and under the guidance of Ms. Vijaya Ghose, the Editor of the The Limca Book of Records, he has interacted with Ms. Amreen Toor, Assistant Editor, who has provided the guidelines that will include the same as a record in their forthcoming edition if completed according to the provided stipulations.

A unique aspect of the ride is that a GPS device fitted in the bike (possible courtesy Heterogeneous Communications Technologies Pvt Ltd.,) will provide current location of the rider in real time, along with all the earlier locations of the rider at any time during the entire ride covered time and the same can be checked by anyone around the world with access codes

It all began when TVS dealers (Zen Motors) Praneeth and Murthy evinced interest to meet the boy who had covered Bombay Bangalore in 16.5 Hours. Prakruthi met them and was pleasantly surprised when they offered to give him all backing to try and achieve the same within 12 hours.

True to their word Praneeth and Murthy went out of their way to give Prakruthi a bike to ride in a month before his every attempt and after he practiced well on the bike, they serviced the bike for him and encouraged him to speed to Bombay.

TVS Motor Co., which has revolutionized the two wheeler market in India gave Prakruthi a TVS Fiero in June 2000. A day after which, he drove the brand new bike and covered Goa from Bangalore (709 kms) in 8 hours 30 minutes. The next day he went from Goa to Mumbai (624 kms) in 8 hours and also went from Mumbai to Bangalore (1023 kms) in 12 hours as a practice ride in November 2002.

Prakruthi, the law graduate from National Law School of India University is not unknown to bikers or biking enthusiasts. His trademark inter-city speed riding attempts have made headlines many times over. He rode from Bangalore to Mumbai (1023 kms) seven times on a two stroke bike clocking 28 hrs, 16.5 hrs, 13.5 hrs, and further timed 12.45 hours, 12.30 hours and 12.30 hours on a Suzuki Shaolin. Each year bettering his previous timing and finally clocking 11 hours 46 minutes.

The acid test was on the 7th of December 2000 when John Abraham flagged Prakruthi in Dadar, Mumbai and he clocked 11 hours 46 minutes from Mumbai to Bangalore, covering 1023 kms in a riding time of 10 hours 46 minutes (averaging an astounding 97.8 kms per hour) on Indian roads. Padmabhushana Dr. Rajkumar received Prakruthi on his arrival. He was released by Veerappan just a few days before this event.

In the record breaking ride he rode at a constant speed of 100 plus km per hour and averaged 97.8 kms plus per hour. Prakruthi took four breaks en route, for refueling. It is extremely taxing for a biker to ride at a speed of 100 plus for 12 hrs at a stretch but Prakruthi is a slave to the drive of passion. He proved that Bangalore to Bombay in half a day is possible on a bike. "

Yeah. I was just going to comment abut this cuz the Shogun has 4 gears. I love the Shaolin - I learnt riding motorcycles on that bike. Huge sentimental value Those 5 gears! That ring-ding!

That must be the legendary ,phantom like Shogun shadow, that machine was planned to be introduced by TVS, but they dropped the idea.It was a slightly de-tuned racing trim one, that is, with the factory racing kit and rumored to be developing 17+bhp.

Yup,i had read the record breaking run in the papers when i was in mysore.Look, most have no idea what a fiero is capable of and those who do don't usually come on the net or form fan-clubs.Ask any mech,or anyone even with some racing experience and they'll tell you how much respect they have for this bike. Even die-hard 2t fans, after riding this bike on a highway will have no option but to agree that it's a ripper, which doesn't even know the meaning of fatigue.
