  • Hey guys, i have been facing a slight problem with my F2's rear drum brake!!

while i am riding, if i apply a slight pressure on the rear brake foot lever (there is play, so does not engage the brake), i get a feeling that the pedal is moving up and down like a harmonic motion..but when i actually apply the brakes, the application is smooth, i mean no up, down movement of the pedal.. What could be the problem? i checked that there is still enough life of the brake pads, its has not yet worn out....

And also, for the past one month, i have been travelling almost 120kms everyday, comprising of highway rides (hardly 15kms of normal traffic rides). i only get a avg of 48 - 50 kmpl if ridden at 55 to a max of 65kmph.. now, is a OK OK avg that i m getting considering the age (8 yrs) of the bike and the total kms it has done (over 1 lakh) kms?? And what has to be done to increase the avg? And will there be any outcome if i get the tune-up of the carb done for this old bike?

Check your wheel and sprocket bearings.. your rear wheel might wobble creating this feel... 48-50 on a lakh old bike is really impressive.. Don't expect more from her.. You can run your bike without any engine rebuild until you get white smoke in the exhaust..

Seriously, I feel that if you're getting around 50 kmpl, then you shouldn't be complaining. That's pretty impressive for the age and condition of the bike. I don't think many here with 7+ year old bikes are getting that much. I'm not.

You may want to get the rear wheel bearings checked to eliminate that up down or sideways wobble. And just as an outside chance, see if your rear brake spring is fine which switches the brake light on. Or check the mounting nut of the brake lever for sideways play. Maybe uneven wear on the inner drum brake liner? Even the brake rod may have developed some slight flex.

        • Dear Friends, due to requests from some members I had started a new thread on LOCOMOTIVES explaining their growth from Steam to Diesel Electric to Electric..It is posted in Coffee Lounge OFF TOPIC Discussion as "AN Intro To Locomotives"...Those who are interested can visit the thread and can raise queries to clear doubts.

          • Guys, yesterday i found out that yamaha libero has the same digital cdi(the socket) as that of a fiero.. Libero stroke length is 56mm and ours is 57.8.. Are cdi units are same?? Do u have any idea about it??

            • just got my bike from service today.....

Fitted in a RTR 180 chain sprocket, had to change the rear bearings (all 3 of them), 2 bearings were completely broken, while the third was intact.!! Now this has eliminated the rear brake pedal up down wobbling!!

Now the thing i noticed about the rtr180 sprocket is that, the initial pick up in the 1st and 2nd gear has improved a lot...while the top speed may have come down (which anyways i am not interested in btw). the thing that really amazed me is that the bike pulls in very easily if the speeds are as low as 25kmph in top gear without jerking/knocking. hence this factor reduces the frequent down shifting of gears which i used to face in the normal f2 chain set... Hope this increases the avg of the bike....

              • and also i would like to know how to keep this chain well maintained since its a proper open chain o ring type chain... as u all know my daily running is 100kms, so after what intervals should i lubricate it and which spray is suitable and readily available in the market?

Use the TVS Tru4 chain spray every 5-700kms.

                    • the RTR 180 uses a 46 teeth rear sprocket while the classic fiero(don't know about f2) has a 39 t rear sprocket.. So you have gained a good acceleration.. But your bike's avg will drop atleast by 3-5 kms.. For cruising, this might be a headache.. your bike will want another shift..

                      • its been 220kms in 2 days after i put in the rtr 180 sprocket....

The points that i have noticed are...
                        1) In gear acceleration has improved a lot!!! that means lesser downshifting... This would definetly be helpful in city and semi-highway riding!

                        2) Now, in my case, i feel that the vibration has increased a bit as soon as the bike crosses the 5k mark.. dont know why?!?

                        3) There has been a drop in top speed (7-8 kmph) and also the average (may be, 5-7kmpl)

                        4) For this type of chain sprocket setup, i now really miss the 5th gear in my bike!!

                        • Well, it's best to stick to stock when OEM parts are available; unless there is full gyaan before going in for a mod. It's always safe to consider all aspects before fitting parts (for eg: a larger sprocket at the back.)

I've been using the TRU4 chain spray with great results. Cleaning the chain with kerosene helps a ton too. Unless there is some other contradictory tip out there.

Hi Tintin, I have a 10 yr old fiero. I had changed to 37 teeth rear sprocket 5 yrs ago as I felt the need of 5th gear and too much not needed torque in the 4th gear. The effect was a much smoother ride, average went up to 55, top speed 110. I have kept this combo since then. The only problem is that the chain loosenes due to cog-chain mismatch. You too would experience this soon.

                            • Hello everyone.

I was out of town for over a week, giving my fiero a much needed rest after an overhaul.
The bike seems amazingly smooth and great now.
However the 200 odd kms old clutch plates already seems to be wearing out, I guess even these one would last me great until 1000 kms and later all the clutch slippage will occur.

Another thing i noticed was, if you revv the bullocks off the bike at each gear, suddenly on letting the throttle off the bike still keeps on revving until 8k on its own.
It reminded me of the situation i came across much earlier, so i turned off the bike and stood still for a couple of minutes.
All was fine later, maybe it might be a small electrical issue.

I feel one day my con rod will break and hit the coil and it would all turn out to be an electrical problem.

Jokes apart, thanks to all you guys to help me sort out my fiero for good, I guess even I should keep it as it is and stop expecting too much from the bike which is already a gem of a machine.

Besides I visited Coimbatore and met our very own vignesh, had a great time with him learning a thing or two more about the fiero.
Too bad wasn't able to ride his fiero on the dirt track which he uses for practice.
I came and went uninformed so it was very difficult for him to arrange time.
Next time maybe I'll have more to share about his fiero experience.

I rode a daytona fitted R15 v2.0 on the kari motor speedway too, wasn't a very pleasant experience and it was one of my worst biking days ever.
After setting the worst lap time ever I guess I don't have much to share about the same.
One thing is for sure though, the fiero rocks in torque than even that machine.

Spend a day in Bangalore too, was feeling like meeting Gix in person as it was weekend, but I couldn't find his number and there was no internet access too so maybe next time.
After eating healthy idlies day and night for 5 days my stomach was craving for junk food.
Visited gopala's mall (the nearest place via gps) to have some Mc Donald's breakfast.

This was my first ever visit to Bangalore as well as Coimbatore and was indeed very pleasant.
I'll plan to get my bike along next time and have some sight seeing along you guys....
Giving a lot to a fiero.
Expecting a lot from a fiero.
