Felt this would be the right time to get back to the forum. Coming from apache 180, gixxer has been entertaining me really really well with smooth engine and handling although there is very less grunt that is comparable. So Let me get to the point. It's been raining like there's no tomorrow in chennai and the city is literally flooded.

I've been taking out my bike now and then when the rain pauses but I'm hesitant to wade through deep stagnant water. Like duke and p200ns, has anyone tried how the bike fares in water when the silencer gets submerged? To make things worse the silencer in gixxer has dual exhaust holes increasing the affinity to intake more water. Has any one tried idling the bike in deep water? Does the bike start in deep water?

I can't find any video on web like duke's or p200ns's performance in deep water.

Share your thoughts and experiences, kindly. Ciao.

Harness is the bundle of cable from your fuse box to all the electricals in the front and another bundle of cable to the rear section and one more to the engine.
Normally there wouldn't be any problem with this. However, if the sheath of insulation is degraded after a couple of years you cannot replace it under warranty. If its just one to six months you should g ahead with warranty.

I had driven in 2 feet of water in a broken road during a kodai trip in my gixy which did fine...
Air intake is under your seat and remember that and thats the drowing point and spark plug point too...
Just keep your rpm high so that water dont seep into silencer...
We have to fear a lot than water in heavy rains like open man holes , broken roads etc...
          Prevention is better than cure...

Thanks for getting in touch. I would like to know if it's okay for the bike to run in deep water with both the exhaust outlets under the water and engine RPM being just above idling RPM. If it's not possible then I wouldn't let my bike to stop in water and start it again in such conditions. But I highly doubt as this is not a highly compressed engine like duke or p200ns. Anyway, not comparing them literally, I'm just curious.

I just experienced driving in water. Since i was going to office i dint risk letting the exhaust submerge. I'm nearly 6 foot and the road had water over my knee.. I noticed water going into the exhaust and immediately switched off the bike and started pushing till clear ground. Then bike started with a single kick and with a little throttle all the water was pumped out of the exhaust. Was amazed at this. Within a matter of seconds all the water was out and engine responded as usual. Maybe they designed something like this.

I also noticed when water went inside, some of it immediately came out from the lower exhaust hole.

Water goes inside the exhaust would not cause any damage..unless the water enter through the air filter or fuel tank to the engine could cause some damage

Do not switch off engine when exhaust is under water.. Instead try giving a little throttle and come out of the water. If you switch off the engine then water might enter the engine through exhaust valve.
When engine is running, the pressure of exhaust gas coming out of the engine keeps water from entering the engine head area.

Will water enter the petrol tank (without tank cover) during rain, as there is a gap in the tank cap and two small holes below it!!!
I have attached photos for reference.

Chill bro.. Thats the water drain hole.. I wash my bike every week.. Whenever i pour water over the tank,a noise comes of the draining water.. Much like sucking juice with straw.. The water doesn't enter the tank...
As for the exhaust its same.. Water enters during washing but comes out from below a small hole.. I have tried starting the bike after a wash.. And it started without any issues...

But it was totally submerged and a number of buses kept crossing me. I was afraid that if bike stopped then i be stuck.

To be honest the enduro, MX and supermotos are the best suited for Indian roads. Waiting for the day when suzuki DRZ models will be out in my city and other manufacturers also to follow that! No need to worry about how worse the roads are in day-to-day life.

i see that you are now starting to explore your new gixxer. This mechanism is there in most of the bikes and don't worry about it. I've let my gixxer stand in rain for hours together and noticed that there was no water in the tank whatsoever. Just close the lid tight and even if water enters it will move out through the drain. Make sure that you don't force a jet of water onto the gap surrounding the lid to test the mechanism.

As everyone has already said , that hole is for water drain . It has a passage and a drain-tube attached to it below . If any of these become clogged , which it frequently does with time , water shall be trapped there under the tank cover outer and inner part and it shall enter the tank whenever you open the cover to fill petrol , which you can never notice because then you'll be busy filling at the pump and paying up . Always keep that hole and underlying passage and flexible tube clear with a long flexible wire .
In my humble opinion , although many bikes use this type of tank cover , it is a poor design - to let in water just next to a petrol tank entrance , create a recess for it to get trapped and then make elaborate arrangement for it to drain out , which easily gets clogged and cannot be seen or cleared from outside - until you open the cover and that trapped water has already entered your tank .
