That's horrifying!
Is your friend good now?
Is the bike under warranty?

Thank God the rider is safe. How can piston come out of cylinder? This is really shocking. Never heard of any incident like this before

Just wondering what could have gone wrong.
What is oddo on bike?

Looks like some parts are not tighten well and over the period on high rpms engine gave up.

Bike has 8000 Km on the odo & 11 months old . He has done no modification of any kind.
it seems that counter balancer failed & during power stroke every thing comes out .. nobody knows what happened.

First gen KTMs alloy cracking/breakage was somewhat acceptable because of the fact of making it light weight(sometimes human error though) but this is something real hazardous and unacceptable. An engine explosion(kind off) that to in the middle of the road while riding. Thank god the rider is safe and even can't deny from the fact that the things might have went into much worse scenario(negative thoughts). KTM+Bajaj need to look after this quality issue, an under year old motorcycle getting trashed and putting the life of its rider in danger. I am following silently this very thread since a very long time and was planning to upgrade to RC390 from CBR250R in the mid of this year but this incident made my mind to think again and again over KTMs reliability.

I'm sorry if I sound harsh but i'm fed up of people having doubts on KTM's reliability. This is a one off case. I've thrashed my 390 from day 1 and I'm fine,so are my friends. There's NOTHING wrong with its reliability.

Its totally ok sir. BTW my comment was made just because of the rate of the lemons present among the oranges in KTM brand. There is no doubt about the machine and its capabilities but the question is raised on QA/QC of the parts before and after assembling because of which these kinds of hazardous incidents popps out. There are loads of issues related to engine failure and to even of 50k+ kms hasslefree ownership reviews though posted over internet. IMO one must have to go through intensive research before buying any product. Good to hear your ride is been faithful throughout your ownership [emoji4] cheers

As reported, Incident happened while HIGH SPEED RUN.

I don't want to say about bike owner and bike maintenance.

I have seen some ktm riders are trashing these 43bhp machines like hell while maintaining them very poorly like 100cc bikes.

Surprisingly such incidents are not reported from track where same bikes are maintained very well and also trashed hard.
does it mean ktm supplies different bikes for tracks and different for road use? Looks impossible.

KTM could have priced these bikes more, at least 1 lakh more than people could have used and maintained them respectably.

I don't know exactly where, but I remember reading an old Ducati Streetfighter S ow worship review here (or maybe the "other" forum) where the valves of the machine shot out while riding. That was damn serious of an issue and I was surprised at how the event unfolded, as the SVC claimed it to be the fault of the slip-on exhaust. That sounded absurd back then and still does. And after all, it was a Ducati, a damn Ducati for crying out loud.
What I mean to say is that these are one off issues and the likely hood of something like this happening is very low. I know because I have rebuilt engines by hand. I did a year of ITI in diesel mechanics and people have made grave mistakes while putting parts back into an engine when rebuilding it. Even in those instances, nothing like this happened. I also know that this forum is filled with mechanics a 1000 times better than me and equally sure that they would feel the same as me right now. How the hell does something like this happen? I highly doubt this to be QC issue considering how some people ride around here. And also how many SVCs treat these machines.
As for the wheels, my bike just got its rear wheel replaced a month back and it wasn't me who cracked it. Even after that I don't think the wheels are weak in any way what so ever. They do what they are built to do. It's sensible to blame the manufacturer when your priced poccession does kaput, but doing the same when you have nothing more than word of the mouth interpretation of the events that caused it to go kaput is not very fair to the machine or the manufacturer. I will agree if someone says that the KTMs aren't built as well as the Ninja or R3, they arent, period. But never for a second have I felt then to be cheap and that's the thing, to achieve the kind of performance that these machines give, at the price that they give it, choices and assumptions are to be made. KTM simply cannot comprehend the way motorcycles are treated in our country. They are bloody brilliant at making bikes, off roader at that. They have won Dhakar so many times that they are at home there. You can't do that if your products are sub par in terms of quality. At the end of the day, I guess every one is entitled to their opinion. chip94, I feel what you are trying to say brother.
Must ride on!

I SO agree with you here! I maintain and service my 390 at home and take pride in taking care of her. But like you said, I've seen so many KTM's neglected and feel so sorry for the bike. I once came across a 390 at the service centre that was due an oil change for the past 6000km. Yes, the owner ran on the same oil for close to 14K km. The oil had watered down and the oil filter felt like mould.

Had KTM priced these a lakh higher like you said, the bikes would've been taken care of.

ananthu has a point here. Engine components spewing in the middle of nowhere can be due to lots of reasons. Weak one off part, poor service at the the service center level, there is too much that meets the eye. Should it be happening, in the first place? No. KTM with all due respect should check the root cause of the problem, be it part quality, or poor service job. Ultimately it's the rider's life that's in line. I can't imagine this happening when overtaking or a close call situation, this could have turned fatal.

I hope KTM investigates the root cause behind this, be it a servicing defect or a part defect is yet to be known, at KTM's discretion. But, whatever it is I hope they learn to improve wherever it's required.

Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

THE END
