    Yesterday something funny happened...

When I was driving back home at night, a young kid on some scooty wanted to race me. He would be around 16-17 years old, did not wear a helmet, no protective gear (in fact he was wearing a sleaveless...) and had an equally young lady friend as a pillion (obviously, not wearing a helmet too). Maybe he wanted to show off his riding "skills" by taking on a big looking bike. I was like "Dude, seriously???"

As usual, I let him pass. Only to find him at the next traffic stop, trapped between left side of a bus and pavement. I had a nice laugh and thought "Kid, when you gain some experience, you'll know never to overtake a bus from left. Especially when a bus stop is around!" . Had he scrapped my bike in his enthusiasm, I would have dragged him by collar to the nearest police station for sure.

      Owners,
      1. How are you managing with the RVMs on RS200? Need some tips... I am not feeling very comfortable while driving in city as I consider RVMs as one of the most important things on a bike.
      2. Also are you able to hold bike around 1500-2000 RPM in any gear at any speed? Because it seems Iam always riding the bike around 3500-4000 RPM and a speed of 40kmph; it is not good for a bike to ride only at one RPM.
      3. When you just turn on the key and not turn on the engine, can we switch on indicators or headlights on this bike???

Good One rachitsharma2000. Yes kids these days are very naive and at the same time think they know everything... I blame their parents equally for allowing them to buy or ride such bikes and not giving them awareness about safety and responsibility...

          1. Able to manage with the RVMs alright. They aren't the best with angles buts with a little movement it's useable.
          2. Around 2k rpm in feasible only in gear 1 & 2.
          3. The indicators will work, the headlight won't.

Bajaj Pulsar RS200: The Story of My First Bike

I know the post is a bit long. But please bear with me, as I cannot miss out to skip any of the events which led me to my first bike.

Owning a sports bike was my dream right from the moment when I first revved a motorcycle. It was, however, far away from the reach of my wallet, and asking Dad to buy me one was a decision I never really wanted to take. Not that he would have refused, but the pride of buying my first bike and reaching out for my own cheque book to pay for it was something I always desired to feel.

              My Dream Started Unwinding...

It all started in mid-2014, when the urge of owning a bike struck me very badly. I started making plans as to how I would manage the finances and what would my budget be. My decent beginners-income as a full-time blogger restricted my wallet in the realms of Pulsar 135 LS. I started looking for a used LS and most of the well-maintained ones were carrying a price-tag of around 30-35K. I discussed the idea with my friends, but most of them suggested I buy a new one. So I held on to my urge for some time.

Then came the news of the new Suzuki Gixxer and I was all crazy about that naked! I just loved its design and the fact that it was a Suzuki was enough to drive me bonkers over it! After many days of browsing pics and reading reviews, I realized that my finances were not as willing as my dreams. So I had to settle once again with the self-assurance of 'ek-do mahine baad khareed lenge' (will buy it after a month or two)
. It was like giving a large dose of chloroform to the bike enthusiast in me. Till this moment, I had never thought of going beyond 150 CCs (as I thought I would not be able to handle anything above that) .

Then came the month of December 2014 and my luck started favouring me. My income started rising steadily and now I could easily get a Gixxer by saving for around 3 months. But now that I had the money factor under control, I increased the displacement and started looking for a 200 CC bike. I set my budget to 1 Lakh and thought of buying the NS 200. But my plans got postponed due to other important family issues and I only got time in Feb 2015 to finally get back on my two-wheeler dream.

I saw the Gixxer SF coming and that was the moment I decided that this was it! This is what I need! The blue MotoGP edition just caught my eye and I started saving up. It was only in May that I had accumulated 1 Lakh Rupees and now I was already to go out and book the Gixxer SF! Finally!

It was the month of May and I was reading Gixxer SF reviews to make sure that my decision was an intelligent one. I had not booked the bike yet and was planning to do it a week later. Also, I had not considered searching for other bikes, so it was by pure luck that I struck upon the RS. One fine day, I bumped into a bike-news website which displayed the pictures of the Bajaj Pulsar RS200!

Oh my God! What a bike! The first impression of the RS200 in my eyes was that of a futuristic Bumblebee design. Frankly speaking, I found the Yellow machine so sexy that I started reading all that I could about the bike. Everything looked perfect, but I was still a bit sceptical. The reason for this is that I have heard a lot of 'legends' (possibly myths) about the Pulsar engines and Bajaj quality. But I had also heard that after the NS200, the Pulsar engine had become much more refined.

So I had my final thought in solitude, the thought that would be the deciding factor. I compared the Gixxer SF and the RS200.

Me: Wouldn't 150 CC fall short?

Myself: It's your first bike dude..starting from a lower CC will be better..learn from scratch

Me: Isn't the SF too thin? I mean, it looks good but they have just added the fairing and nothing else.

Myself: It's a Suzuki. Best performance plus class-leading quality. What else do you want?

Me: But the Pulsar looks more eye-catchy and has more features..

Myself: There's no use discussing it if your heart has already decided on the RS.

              Me:

So just before 3 days of booking my first bike, I took a leap of faith and decided on the RS200. Heck! My first bike should not be less than 200 CC and it has to give me a big bike feel! Sorry Gixxer SF, the new Pulsar enchanted me completely !

              Booking and the Waiting...

So after I heartlessly abandoned the idea of the SF and revved my thoughts towards the RS, I was confused between the ABS and the NON-ABS model. I'm not saying that the NON-ABS one is better in terms of braking; the ABS one rules that area obviously. But I still had some financial restraints and there's only so much you can do to raise your budget. I had already raised my budget from 1 Lakh to 1.35 Lakhs, plus I also wanted to buy some good riding gear, which would cost at least 10K. So even that extra 12K for the ABS model was feeling heavy on my wallet somehow.

I finally decided on the NON-ABS one, thinking that my next bike would surely be a fully ABS-equipped one and the fact that I was already investing in riding gear was a good combination after all. So I went ahead and booked the NON-ABS Yellow RS200 on 26th May, 2015 from Dahanu (3 hours from Mumbai)
              ,
where my parents live. The reason behind it was that the Dahanu showroom offered a better price and lesser waiting period than the Mumbai guys.

I knew about the 2 months waiting period, but when the showroom manager repeated it once again, it pierced my heart badly.
Though he did mention that I could hope the delivery to be 15 days quicker, I almost went into a paranoia. With some difficulty, I consoled myself somehow that the wait was worth it and time would pass away quickly.

              Meeting xBhp

It was only after booking the bike that I joined xBhp and wow! What a plethora of information. A heaven for bike enthusiasts!
From that date to this, I still keep reading all the new posts avidly, be it travelogues or owner reviews. I joined the RS200 section and started following all of the updates. Every time an RS200 owner posted the pics, I would drool over it and keep staring for hours, sometimes coming back to the page thrice or more times to see it again. Also, every time an owner pointed out an issue in the bike, I just prayed my bike to be free of any such glitch.

I got a call from the Bajaj showroom after 15 days of booking the bike. The manager offered to deliver the bike the next day if I was interested in the Red one, but I politely declined. It had to be the Yellow beast!

I went to the showroom a week later and handed over the cheque to the for the remaining payment. I dated it for 20th June, just as directed by the manager. He actually is the friend of one of my Dad's friends, so no cheating or inconvenience was possible here. Phew

On the 22nd of June, I received an automated message saying that my cheque had been cleared. I called up the manager and he confirmed the same. He said that the bike was here and I could have a look if I wanted, but will not be able to take the delivery as the registration was not yet done. I know it was a good chance to have a peek at my RS, but it would have been painful to leave without it. So I declined saying that I would see it on the delivery day itself.

              Riding Gear

A week before the delivery, I started looking for riding gear on the web. @rachitsharma2000 was very helpful in the matter and suggested me to visit the Moto101 shop in Khar West, Mumbai. Thanks. I went ahead and bought all the important stuff- helmet, gloves, balaclava, jacket. I knew I was going to do a lot of touring. (Will get a knee-guard after rains, when I start touring).

My daily routine involved watching videos and pics and reading ownership reviews of the RS. Time was flowing by terribly slow for me. I was really getting impatient and not for a second was I able to get the RS out of my mind. My days and nights were filled with imaginations of me and my Yellow RS going on rides together. In that one week, I must have tried on the riding gear at least 3 times, fully ready to attack the road. Invited a lot of humorous looks and comments from my family.

              The Delivery

Finally, the wait came to an end when the showroom manager called me up on the 2nd of July saying that my bike would be ready on the 4th of June. Thank God, I did not have to wait for 2 full months!

So I was all excited about the date and I told my Mom and Dad about it.

She went to have a look at the calendar and came back saying:

Mom: You will not take delivery on the 4th. Better take it on the 6th.

              Me: WHY!!!!???

              Mom: It's Saturday.

Me: What! Why? So what if it's a Saturday?

Mom: Tradition (I think she meant superstition
              ).

Anyway, there was no point arguing, as my Mom was like -

So I had to take the delivery on Monday, as Sunday was a holiday for the showroom. Well, I had waited 5 Weeks, so 2 more days did not cause me a lot of pain, though they still made my nights sleepless. I somehow passed those 2 super-long days.

I was only able to sleep at 4 AM on Sunday night, the night before the D-Day. I woke up fresh at 9 AM and was more than eager to rush to the showroom. Called the manager and he said that I could come by 11 AM.

So I put on sparkling smart clothes (as if I was meeting my girlfriend after a long time), and drove off with my Dad in our car to the showroom, with my brand new helmet in my arms tightly. Reached the showroom sharp on the given time and finished all the formalities.

              Finally, the manager said -

Manager: Just five more minutes (in addition to the 40 days that you have painfully waited). Your bike is getting ready.

I probably misheard it as - "Your Bride is getting ready!"
(Which was the scenario anyway )

I could feel my pulse rising in excitement and I was all getting nervous. I had to control myself, so as to not appear as a complete lunatic. And after a few minutes, my shining new RS 'Bride' 200 was rolled out.

GOSH! My new Yellow buddy. My beast. My baby. My...okay I just can't stop coochie-cooing about it. In my humble opinion, the bike looks polarizing in pictures, but in flesh, it's totally awesome and menacing. Without taking my eyes off her (yes, from 'it' to 'her', she has earned my love and respect), I went ahead and started the PDI check. It looked more like a make-out session, as I was touching her slowly and gently, with my fingers trembling in excitement. I realized a minute later that my Bike-Sutra was looking awkward to the showroom guys
              .

              Moment of Pride

Anyway, after performing the checks and making sure 'She' was in a perfectly mint condition, I looked at the manager and nodded in approval. He promptly handed over the keys.

Now was the chance to make my Dad feel proud. I held out the keys towards him.

              Dad: What?

Me: Aap le chalo ghar tak. (You ride her home).

The sparkle in his eyes was the thing that I was waiting for. A proud moment for me and my Dad.
I could see the sense of pride in his eyes for me. His son had grown up. Even though I hadn't bought it for him, I wanted him to be the first one riding the bike. Because if it wasn't for him, I would not have been able to stand up in life and live on my own. It was all because of him. I owe everything to him.

So I told him to start riding and I followed him in the car. Heads were turning on the road to have a look at my Bumblebee.
I could not stop smiling, both for my bike and my dad. We passed a Red RS and I caught the rider eyeing my Yellow Bride and comparing the colour with his bike.

We went to the temple first and performed the rituals. I drew a tikka on the windshield and felt like the marriage was complete.
Then went home to Mom and she too was very happy seeing the smile on our faces.

Now was the time to take control of my RS. I put on my helmet and gloves and brought her to life with a soft touch on the starter. She woke up immediately in respect. The engine sounded so melodious to me; it totally enchanted me and was no less than A.R Rahman's music at that moment. I switched to the first gear and revved!!

              Whoa!
What a feeling. The bike looks heavy, but is totally stable and never did I feel like I would lose control of her. The big bike feel made me feel extremely awesome behind the helmet on the saddle! I couldn't push the bike hard due to the run-in period, but even that 60km/hr ride below 4.5 RPM was enough to make me fall in love permanently with my RS.

I rode merrily for 20 minutes along the vacant roads with green fields on both the sides, a view every rider will cherish, especially someone like me who is riding his first bike, and that too a RS200! I returned home and parked her safely in my garage beside my car. And since then, it has been two days and I never miss a chance to pop into the garage and admire my new partner. It's the start of a new love story.

If you just touched 125 kmph and dint hold that speed for more than a few seconds, it won't cause any major problems to the engine.

well it would do no harm doing such speed once but try to keep it in prescribed limits durig break in....share your experience about stability at that speed and exhaust sound during acceleration and that added weight would have made more stable I guess....

Thanks bro. Yes I will take care of her like a baby.

About the ABS, yes I totally understand your point and respect your opinion, but I was under serious constraints as I had already raised my budget by 35K and even 2K more would have taken a serious toll on the wallet of a 19.5 year old blogger like me. However, I do know that the guys having ABS will live a longer life. (flying helmets received)

Jokes apart, (gyaan starts here ) safety comes first and I myself suggest everyone to push those extra 12K for the ABS version. You may be a good and responsible rider, but streets are filled with hazards (and idiots) that are not under your control. However, even with the ABS in your wheels, do not get careless and still ride as carefully as you would with a NON-ABS bike, because there is no forecast for accidents.

                          Cheers!
Two tires feel better than four. Period.

You will always cherish this feeling my friend... throughout your life...

Mom: You will not take delivery on the 4th. Better take it on the 6th.

                            Me: WHY!!!!???

Mom: Tradition (I think she meant superstition
                            ).

Anyway, there was no point arguing, as my Mom was like -

This exact thing happened with me too... My delivery was on Staurday and my Mom had said no to buying anything new on Saturday. I asked her why and she answered something about Shani Dev. Here my knowledge of mythology came in handy . I narrated an incident which says Shani Dev can't hurt a Hanuman bhakt. On this basis, I said that it would be fine if I buy the bike on Saturday and take it for a Hanuman Ji mandir for pooja...

Finally she agreed and I got the bike home on Saturday... Great Success!!!!

                            Things we do for love!

Bhai, my tear glands went overflow reading this... When are you planning to script down Rajshree Productions' next movie?

A big congrats on your purchase... I am sure it was a happy moment for you and proud moment for your Father!!!

Well the feeling of riding the bike at that speed is wordless but I try to explain it.
                              1. Stability - one word to say AWESOME I never ever had experience such great control on any bike ever.
2.Exaust sound - Its like Ferrari exhaust is fitted on RS what a great headturner sound everybody at that toll bridge is seeing my bike like crazy.
3.Brakes - Despite being non -abs version it is so much planted on road that the speed has been reduced from 120 to 60 in a matter of seconds.

And lastly the mrf tyres are superb.

You will face no problem until unless you redlined the bike. Also taking the bike to higher RPMs and higher speeds now and then even in run-in period is good for the machine.

Congrats on your purchase buddy. One week back this might have made me impatient now that I brought the 'BRIDE' home I feel proud to read stuff like this. What did you name her btw???
Can you share the gear you bought with price details??? I am looking for stuff like those around 10K.
