Guys, I just came back from a short ride on my R3 and my rear tyre fishtailed on a road that had a trail of water(by a water tanker). I was at 10-15 kmh so no problems to get back the bike in a straight line. I know this happened as i applied just the rear brake. But i wanted to know is this solely because of my clumsiness or the MRFs are also a tad bit at fault?

normally if u apply only rear , fish tail will happen unless u r bike has super sticky tyres. It is always better to use both front and rear brakes.

Yup right , i basically follow the 80-20 rule(front-rear brake). I just thought since i was at crawling speed, just the rear brake would do. So basically the main reason for the rear lock/fishtailing is 90% my fault and 10% that of MRFs
On a side note, What is the life of these MRFs?

I got myself a test ride at Vinayak Yamaha with much difficulty. They gave me a black bike to test ride that apparently hadnt even completed PDI (and hence the Odo was disconnected or so they say). I saw 4 bikes - one on display, one for test rides and two upstairs in the service bay for Benellis. Somehow the bike didnt click with me the way the R15 or the Continental GT did. The posture was definitely a little 'off' and will take some getting used to.Yes, it does feel like a premium product but the dealership people hardly showed any enthusiasm in selling the bike.

If I do end up buying the bike (its a long shot), I will ask Yamaha to discount the commission of the sales team as I would have sold the bike to myself!

I asked about Vinayak Yamaha about the frame sliders and they showed me DSK Benelli branded ones were put on a TNT 300. It was the long protruding type and cost Rs 4.5K for both front and rear.

Orion was good for services once upon a time but once Yamaha sales picked up it wasnt worth giving it to them as they would always return it dirtier than what you gave it to them and billing was always a pain. I checked with Vinayak Yamaha on the service front and they showed me dedicated bays for the R3 and introduced me to the guy who has been specially trained on the R3.

But ..... I spoke to a biker buddy who bought a R3 from another dealership. While selling they similarly showed him and his brother the special service bay that is used for R1s and other imports. When it was time for service though they said the R3 doesnt fit and it was taken to a different spot. True story.

Riding position difficult to adjust if you have ridden R15 for long , personally i felt R15 riding is super comfort , now i am using my cousin Ninja250R from 3 months , even ninja riding i didn;t like , and as your taller than me i can imagine why R3 riding position didn't suited you.
your right on spot about Yamaha dealership lack of interest in R3, still i can't believe it , i also went to 3 showrooms here , all of them didn't even care for customer .

Hope all are enjoying their rides. I am following this thread thoroughly as my ride is due for an upgrade.
Do we have a alternate for the MRFs? Especially Pirellis to be available through CEAT stores.

Agree with you 100% buddy. If I only went by showroom experience, I would have bought the Ninja 300 without a second look at Yamaha. If the riding position was better suited to me, I would have convinced myself that the R3 is the bike for me but like you said the riding position is difficult to adjust to.

The funny thing is so many people have said the riding position of the R15 is too aggressive, RC 390 is not for city use etc. Like you, even I feel supremely comfortable on those bikes!

Since they are 17", options should be easily available even if you have to go one size up or down. The day I see Pirelli tyres in Ceat stores is the day I will believe that piece of widely reported news.

                      .
Hehe.It took me 3 test Drives to convince myself for R3. First day I went with a negative frame of mind and found so many faults with the bike. Didnt even take the TD.Just discarded it saying to myself that its made of plastic, doesn't have USD forks, doesn't have steel braided brake lines, etc So i went back to Test Drive the TNT 300.Difference in engine and power delivery was so obvious. It felt sluggish as compared to R3. But then TNT 300 is made for a different audience.

Then back to CGT (forced by wife to do TD ). Vibrations were too much to my liking.RE quality was another concern. Two of my friends lost there chrome rings and one of them has starting problems when bike is not ridden for a week.

Then again i went for a TD on R3.This time i went with a positive mind and tried understanding the R3 better. The Engine was smooth as butter, power delivery linear- typical Yamaha and then there is a zone above 7000 rpm when it feels as if a NOS button have been pressed.I rode it as i would ride in traffic - 2nd and 3rd gear. Lugging on 40kmh on 4th gear.Everything was perfect-No strain no request from bike. I loved it but didn't book. Came back home and searched various international forums and comparos of R3 with N300 and RC390 and everywhere R3 was the preferred all rounder bike.

So again i went for a TD and this time i rode it like i stoled it The gear change was accurate, the engine so rev happy and the exhaust sound was music.I booked it that day and the rest is history.
BTW coming to the attitude of the dealers- Its not great but its not bad either. i was treated well and I wouldn't complete.May be i didn't have much hopes from them .Coming to dealers attitude in general -I went to Ducati UB city on 1st weekend after launch and their attitude was worse than bajaj selling their auto rickshaws. The guy scanned me from top to bottom and then came to talk to me. Then he wasnt interested at all in explaining about the bike's features.May be i should have flashed my cheque book or may be should have gone in Bappi lehri's look with all gold chains and all.

Since my posts have been scattered over the last several pages, I'll try to wrap my pre sales experience in a single one for the benefit of others.

                                1. Went to Vinayak Yamaha to check the R3 and asked about test rides. They said they arent giving any. The only way to do so was to book paying Rs 30,000 and then get test rides. But if I dont like it, I can cancel my booking but I get only Rs 25,000 back. Hence, test ride cost = Rs 5,000 which is delusional behaviour at its finest.
                                2. Gave them my details and told them to contact me if they change their policy. They said they will definitely get back to me in 2 days. They didnt.
                                3. I called them 2 days later and asked what about the test ride. They said they will find out and get back to me. Which means they hadnt done anything yet despite my visit to the showroom.
                                4. They didnt get back to me so again I called them and asked the status. They said they will confirm with me in some time.
                                5. Finally they said I can come for a test ride after they got permission from their management (!!!).
                                6. I went for a test ride but despite the bike being ready the team lead took forever to get out of a meeting and kept me waiting. Not the way you want to treat a customer who is planning on shelling out close to 4 big ones.
                                7. The test ride was supposed to be till the next junction and back. I said I dont agree and told them I am taking it for a longer distance and that their guy can follow me. They were surprised but agreed.
                                8. I told them I need a follow up test ride on Sunday with my better half since I need to ensure she is comfortable on the bike and is only free on Sundays. They were not willing for a Sunday test ride and finally said I need to tell them one day in advance so they can get permission (!!!).

At no stage of the process did I feel that they were trying to sell the bike to me and I was the one pushing them with all my following up! If I would have waited for them to revert, I would have said goodbye to the R3 dream. So it wasnt a terrible experience but I really cant call it a good or acceptable experience either.

That said, outside of the posture, the bike is quite a package. Very nice power delivery, a muted exhaust note and a discreet shade of black make it a very appealing proposition. If only Yamaha and its dealers were better, we would be seeing a lot more of them on the roads. In comparison, Kawasaki were more than ready to give me a test ride of the Ninja 300 once it came back from Chennai.
