Hi guys just got back last night from a 1200 km ride to Mcleodganj on Shadowfax ! and I must say I am seriously impressed with what RE has come out with. Did about 30 kms of off roading too to the absolute beginning of the Triund trek and this machine took everything the dirt track threw at it with applomb and style. And did I mention I had a pillion too ?

Stand on the pegs and let the suspensions and chassis do what they are designed to do and you will simply love this bike. I was accompanied by 6 500cc desert storms and even though I had a pillion I was up the track in no time with the 500s a mere spec in my RVMs. However, it was no match for the massive torque churned out by the bulls when on highways - my turn to be a spec in their RVM (attributed to my not being able to cross 80 kmph). I got a pretty decent mileage of 36-38 too which is impressive I think for this machine. But then I had a good riding group (known them for like ages now) who used to wait for me to catch up at predesignated check points which I do appreciate.

The seat comfort and overall ergonomics of this machine is simply too good to be true especially since I migrated from an NS. From Dera Bassi Nik Bakers the next brake was at Delhi border barring a fuel pit stop at Karnal without getting off the bike.

There is one little issue which i am facing - there is a certain grinding type of sound coming from the engine accompanied with a tik tik tik sound. Before I left I got the tappets checked and tightened however that sound was back. I showed the sound to a local mechanic and he told me it was probably a rocker arm issue since tappets dont get loose so soon after tightening. Will be taking it to the svc to get it checked. Any of you folks have faced this grinding sound (like a muffled dosa maker on the move) and the tik tik sound which grows louder as the engine heats up. Also, there is this certain mechanic clanking ticking type of sound at certain speeds - 2nd gear at 30, 3rd gear at 40, 4th gear at 60 ... Any vague idea what that could be about would be appreciated.

Disclaimer : The above paragraph does not indicate that I am complaining about this machine. I love my machine as its my choice and my hard earned money and will take it to the svc as many times as i have to in order to make it perfect for me.

Thanks guys to all who posted their experiences and helped me make up my mind to get hold of one.

Spiti valley here comes Shadowfax !!

Was that due to lack of wind protection or limitation of the engine? Just curious.

Yes due to the run in period (500-2000 km period) ... did not face headward winds so cannot comment if headward winds would have a detrimental effect on performance and by what extent -

Like many others i am also facing engine heating issue.
Bike starts heating only after 2 Kms.
Will be going to ASC on weekends. Hopefully they will give my Black Panther ( i named her Black Panther) on the same day.

                Inspite of all these issues
I love my Black Panther lot.

Hi guys. I am new to the forum. On first of this month I booked Himalayan. I will be using it for daily commute and occasional ride. Showroom guy told me that I will get efi engine and by the end of month or 1st week of next month. I have few queries.
                  1. What is the real mileage in city and high way.
                  2. I don't like the RE crash guard / engine guard, since it does not provide much security to legs in case of crash. If there any crash gurad available online or offline(dehradun).
                  3. About the saari guard (back wheel cover), I don't like the build plus there is no foot stand for ladies in it. If there any option available outside.
                  4. Any other accessories or tips for new owner.(shifting from pulsar 150)

Did any of you notice the increased weight in the current spec on the official website? It's now 191kg from the 182kg in the earlier model. I wonder what caused a whopping 9kg increase in weight.

Fi module, wiring harness changes and a heavier exhaust.

Can anyone please share the details of the FI module of the Himalayan. Is it the similar like TBTS 500 or an improved one?

In a scooter the gears are a CVT meaning they automatically change gears, you only have to open the throttle. When bikes, you need to upshift, and downshift gears with respect to engine RPM. Don't climb hills immediately, first off, just try riding the bike in plane roads, try changing all the gears from one to five both, upshift and downshift. This would give you an idea of where to change, why to change with respect to RPM.

Just try riding for a week in flat to medium incline surfaces, you'll get the knack of it and then try some hill riding.

Got answer from REH Facebook page

Gear ratio should be as below
                          1st: till 30
                          2nd:till 50
                          3rd: till 80
                          4th: till 100
                          5th: after 100

and of course as suggested by you people 2nd or 3rd while climbing.

If yes, then I must admit that I am on 5th gear when my speedo touches 50/55. Stretch it a bit and you can take it to 60/65

I am facing engine heating issue. Engine starts getting heated like hell when i ride for 2 to 3 odd Kms from my office to home. I will be going to ASC today to show this. Also i feel fuel is getting evaporated as i could smell strong petrol from fuel cap.

Let's see what solution service center gives me.
