It doubt it to be a printing mistake (though bajaj's manuals have some errors, based on my experience with the dukes manual). Can you post a picture from the manual ?
Otherwise, they have probably not cleaned and fit the carb properly. Cloud be that a jet is blocked (i've seen that happen) i.e. less fuel entering carb.
When you pull the lever down, do feel tension/have to apply some force at the lever ? and moving it up feels like 'it is springing back to its normal position' ?
Because to me, looking at that picture it does indeed look like the 'down' position is choke 'on' and up is 'off'.

So your mechanic's explanation of the behavior of the bike on vs off choke is correct, but a good possibility that the carb was not cleaned and fixed back properly.
I asked them clearly it try cleaned the carburettor and jets to which they said yes. There doesn't seem to be any tension while moving the choke as you asked. It moves quite smoothly both ways.

If what you're saying and others on this forum are saying along with the mechanic it seems that choke is off when pushed down. However please see the image from the manual which clearly says choke is on when pushed down.

No worries mate. Through confusion we find the way to true conclusion. Thanks for the info though

I think the manual is correct. As i said earlier looking at it, it does look like you are 'pulling' it when you push it down. You should feel some resistance you you engage the choke..
I suspect the carb was not cleaned and put back together properly. Have them dismantle it completely and put it back together in your presence. Maybe the carb tuning is out of whack.. could be that they did clean it, but got the tuning wrong.
If possible check another ct100b that has a similar setup and ride it with the choke in A2 position.. if it sputters/stalls after a couple of km it means something is wrong with the carb/choke on your bike and needs to be cleaned/adjusted/put back together properly.

I understand your "tuning went wrong" part and he bust check it with mechanic.

Now you are asking him to ride in A2 (choke-ON) position. How can someone ride with choke-ON ? Bike will never start. Choke is only for cold starts, it must be in OFF position (A1 as per the manual) when you ride

I asked him to ride another ct100b with the choke in a2 position only to check if it exhibits similar behavior. Why would a bike not start if the choke is on?
you can also start a warm bike using choke (just that it is normally not required), and you can ride it.. it will as i said eventually sputter and shut down in a km or so..
And so he will know which position (A1 or A2) is the correct one during normal operation.

The simplest way imo to troubleshoot some issues is by checking/comparing it with another similar bike.. the less you fiddle around (blind troubleshooting) with the mechanical's the better it is.

My instinct says the manual is correct and that his carb is not setup properly.. let us see what he reports.

Well, using another similar bike is definitely an intelligent option

Well, if I put choke-ON on my warm bike, it shuts off. Same is true for all the bikes/scooters I have ridden even temporarily. Called up few friends, even they confirmed it. I was pointing to the fact that OP was trying to ride the bike with choke-ON, that is definitely a frustrating thing to do.

Experience after 9300 km

I just got 3rd free service done. Few observations:
1. Engine oil is pale-yellow in color originally. Once you change oil then till 2.7K it retains its original color but between 2.7K to 2.9K somewhere it suddenly changes to black. Once engine oil changes color then you will notice drop in power, it starts feeling like some 60cc scooty (yes, I have used TVS scooty and I know how it feels). You will also notice drop in pick-up and torque. This becomes more and more noticeable as you keep on riding with black oil. Since it is my first bike and hence I had no ideas about drop in power & torque beyond 3K after 1st oil change. But now I was alert after 2nd free service. I noticed the pattern. Bajaj says you should change oil every 5K but I will recommend 2.5-2.7K. I searched xbhp too for oil change interval and most of the posts agree on 2.7K oil change. Trust me that drop in power & torque dose not feel good at all. Generally, I ride the bike but after oil turns black and blacker, you feel like you have to forcibly ride the bike with non-stop hand-movement on accelerator.
2. I keep lubricating the chain every 400km and it makes a lot of difference in ride-quality. In fact, Earlier I used to do it after every 500 km but after you spend time with your bike, you will become so good at feeling your bike that you will know when when chain needs lubrication and that is exactly why I do it every 400 km now. Since chain is covered, I clean it every 1500-2000 km. Now it is rainy season in Hyderabad and I am lubricating it every 250-300 km. If you lubricate regularly (read religiously) then it does not take much time plus you get great ride-quality. The process is describes in my other post here. Currently I am using Diesel to clean the chain than WD40.
3. Just finished with 3rd and last free service. The only thing changed was Air-Filter worth 75/- . CT100B is almost totally maintenance-free. I read lot of negative criticism of Bajaj bikes on this and other forums/places compared to Honda/Hero/TVS etc that Bajaj bikes are not much good in quality. Well, for 9300 km, the only thing that went off was 50/- headlight bulb.
4. I don't know what is that 55/-they charge on every service as "Consummable". I asked them service is free then why. Guy replied service charge is 460/- extra along with what is on the bill and "consumable" will always be there and in does not come under service. So I will be on paid service from next time, 1000/- approximately.
5. Bike is so easy to manoeuvre in traffic and tight parking conditions it feels like it slides itself out of these problems without much effort on my part.
6. The luggage-rack given on bike to put panniers on the side saved me from lot of trouble. I see lot of guys revving on their sports bike carrying their stuff in backpacks.
7. It has been a year since I bought it, I have taken it to almost every kind of indian road and I feel lack of power when I get a pillion and when I ride on road full of potholes and when I ride in Jubilee Hills where road has slopes ranging from 30-70 degrees and this bike has lot of difficulty for such angled slopes. Now I really feel like moving onto higher powered bike. I don't think 100c are enough for city rides. Plus the headlight got very weak lightbeam & it can cause accident. I was thinking of V15, Avenger Cruise or Dominar (got no place to put panniers ) but then again I am waiting for something like Avenger 373cc or V15 based 373cc because Bajaj said 2017 & 2018 they will be releasing different bikes with V15 style and Dominar engine.

Thanks bro for taking the time to publish the pictures of the light. I think i too have to change the bulb soon as the stock bulb that came with the motorcycle is now dimming quite a bit. Will take up ur suggestion and buy this bulb and get it fitted soon. Thanks once again.

Hi Arnuld,

Congrats for riding 9300 km on this bike. I have completed 2600km last week and gave it to the service center as it has been near to 260 days. Got the service done, but no oil changed as the last oil change was at 560 km during my first servicing of the bike. I do use the bike daily, but the distance is very short say 3-5 km of daily usage. The bill amount for second service came to Rs. 26/- (no oil changed). It was your writing and blogging about the bike that i too went and bought this bike (as you know). The bike gave me trouble regarding the mileage, consistently giving the mileage of 40-42 km. Somehow, someone, did something to the carbuerattor and the mileage went out for toss. Last week when got the second service, the ASC guy told that they have optimised the carburettor and ask me to check the mileage and report it back to them if it is not up to the mark. Will do so in a couple of weeks (me being a lazy ass).

So you are thinking of upgrading too... Hhhmm.... Since this is also my first bike and on this bike i learned to ride a bike, i will keep it for at least 5 years or so, though i do feel that the bike is 100 cc and performs what we are paying it to perform. But a 150 cc bike will just extinguish the yearn for power as well as mileage...

I am thinking about upgrading the tyres to tubless (both front and rear). COmments and inputs from everyone is appreciated regarding this.

Save riding to all...

I owned a 2006 CT 100 and she gave good miles per litre but I was never happy with the power, but cherish the bike for flixablity, sweet cute machine for city rides, I now have a Suzuki gs150r 6 speed and its good for highway esp the 6th gear, also have a 220 pulsar planning to rebuild engine, I might pick a used cbr 250r abs,

Aah.. thanks for the nice words, someone followed my writing . I too got less mileage for sometime on this bike. That was before 2nd service. Remember, when oil turns black, it affects the mileage too because you press the accelerator more for same power.

Well, life is about progress, I was able to afford my first bike at age 36, now I want to move forward and kep on going up every 2 years. It has been a year since I purchased it and 2018 I will get a new one. V15 got mileage of 50 in city as per the owners here on this forum but I am no longer interested in mileage. I love to ride & I ride around 50-70km a day (sometimes 100 km) & those riding problems I mentioned trouble me more than the mileage. I am waiting for the Dominar engine & Avenger/V15 looks & design based bike from Bajaj. I am definitely not a sports fan because they got short gear-ratios and no low-mid range torque and no facility to put panniers, all things required by a commuter.

I tried sourcing Amby/TATA Ace unit, but the spare shop did not have the piece we were looking for, hence had to get a replacement bulb to go with the current setup.

The Bulb we sourced was a Bosch M5 35/35, yet to ride and see the difference.

Did you just replace the bulb or it required any change in wiring too ?

Thumb rule regarding engine oils is that is should be changed within 2~2.5k KMS. The longer you keep using it, the more wear and tear the bike endures. Hence why I prefer changing mineral oil at 2k intervals rather than keep a synthetic for longer.

You're pampering her I'd say! I adjust and lube it when I change the engine oil. As for cleaning, I don't bother with it. At the end of the day its just a consumable item and spending a lot of time with it doesn't make much sense for me.

Don't bother cleaning the AF at 5k intervals, just replace it. I was not a fan of Bajaj until I got my Discover 100 4G, now the CT100B is my 3rd Bajaj, which goes to prove public opinion is unreliable as always.
1. I don't know what is that 55/-they charge on every service as "Consummable". I asked them service is free then why. Guy replied service charge is 460/- extra along with what is on the bill and "consumable" will always be there and in does not come under service. So I will be on paid service from next time, 1000/- approximately.

Do your own service. As for consumables it consists of anything material they'd use on your bike, i.e lube, nuts, bolts etc. as free service only means that the service charge is exempted.

Better not, bigger motorcycles suck. I prefer CT100B over my P220 and Zen. Its easier to fix and run.

Did you just replace the bulb or it required any change in wiring too ?
Direct fit, the base is the same BA20D type.

Attended the ISG2G 2017 at Thekkady on the CT100B. We covered around 500kms and did some serious off-roading, the stock Ceat's held well except in mud, on descending I had to sit on the tank for traction but that's still light-years ahead of what the shitty stock Euroslips on my Discover 100 4G had to offer. Among the 100+ members who'd attended only the CT100B and a handful of other riders had climbed all 3 mountains and reached the peak seen in the pic.

The CT100B did struggle on the highways but that's fine compared to the uphill and off-road belting it had to take. Truly a VFM offering indeed.

I searched, read different threads on this forum and all across the net on city riding and watched lot of videos too. You are actually right. I learned a bike within 150-200cc is more than enough for city riding in INDIA. That changes the game totally, I mean, excitement and feelings changed for better after I learned this.

And where you got that key-chain from ?

The Keychain was distributed by The Monk along with a couple of xBhp stickers. It was part of the 14th anniversary celebrations.
