Is 9000 kms normal distance for Duke 390's brake pads to wear off, or have they fallen off.?

Because couple of weeks back I had to get the rear wheel off to fix a mushroom puncture and the puncture guy had some difficulty in fitting it back.

Indeed if the pads are worn off and have to be replaced, should i go ahead with the company ones or any other brand. Please suggest. As I have always felt that the rear brakes are nowhere near the front brakes on my bike.

    Sujith
The brake pads shouldn't have fallen off, they might have worn to an extent that their backing plates must have been visible and gives an impression that the pad has fallen off. If your pad has fallen off, your pedal would and will travel all the way down and you will feel it almost immediately. You can stick to stock or upgrade to EBC pads, but I will tell you, you won't have that initial bite on EBC rear pads, they lack that and also take some time get that feel and feedback. I'd suggest you stick to stock, it's cheap and effective.

Yes, the rear brakes are not the best in the world in the D390, but it does do the job for the most part. I'd suggest you replace your front and rear brake pads to that of the current 2018/19 Duke sintered front pads, they offer excellent stopping power and feedback, light years ahead from my old 2016 Duke 390 brakes. Also use the rear brake pads of the current gen.

    Cheers!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

share a picture of the pads/calipers so we can see what is happening.
brake pad wear totally depends on use, 9k km is a bit on the lower side if you are a sane rider and use proper braking technique.
only a picture will let us know what is happening. the factory recommended spec is minimum 1mm pad material anything lesser and you are due for a replacement.

Please find the pictures below. I am 70 percent sane ride with occasional 30 percent pushing the limits.
I dont know but the images are getting flipped. May be its the aspect ratio issue of the pictures.

That said 9000 kms brake wear off is OK and normal for rear brakes(organic pads, not sinterted ones), my rear pads barely last 7000-8000 kms.
Again it depends how often one uses the rear brakes, during most of my bumper to bumper traffic commute I tend to use more of rear brakes.

P.S. Where did you get the mushroom puncture done in Bangalore for bikes?
Safety pins seem to be in place. I use both the front and the rear brakes together for better stopping power.

I got the mushroom puncture at the MRF showroom near to marathalli bridge. Its pretty near to the KTM Marathalli showroom on the opposite side.
Cost is 250 rs compared to the 100 rs of the normal puncture fixing.

As of now I dont feel the brake paddle is traveling all the way down so I guess the pads are still in place though very thin.
Should i replace both the front and rear brake pads together ? I will post pics for the front brake pads as well.

So to re-confirm you are suggesting to go for

front pads = current 2018/19 Duke sintered ones
rear pads = current gen normal ones.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

My bike is November 2018 model, but it seems that it was actually 2019 model as the rear grab handles were the new design ones as found on the current 2019 model.

      Thank you.

Your pads are still in place, only that it's worn out 100% and metal face plate is in contact with the discs (which is bad for the disc plate).

Again brake wear depends on how you use it, some people have a tendency to rest their foot very lightly on the rear brake foot rest and brake lever, even a light pressure is sensitive enough to have the rear brake engaged by 5-10% always.

Try to not rest the toe on your rear brake lever.

P.S. Thanks for the location of the puncture place.

Yup, as I stated earlier, replace your rear brake pads, they are almost down to nothing. If yours is post 2016 and the newer one with TFT, then don't bother, your bike already has the newer sintered pads on the front. For the rear, get the OE one that's best. Make sure your bleed your rear brake before installing the new pads. Also, get your brake pedal free play adjusted if you're constantly and unknowingly always on the rear pedal.

          Good luck.

          Cheers!

hello guys, i recently bought abs to rear calipar brake hose pipe of d390 to fit it on fz25, but unfortunately it's 2cm short so pretty much useless for me. it's unused with washers and bolts. if someone needs it, please let me know. it could help me recover some money i wasted. thanks

Ya, for now I have stopped using the rear disks as much as possible till i replace the pads. May be unknowingly I m pressing my leg very lightly on the rear brake lever. Will keep an eye out for this.
Any idea how much do they cost. I had read on this forum only that they are approximately around 300 rs, though I am not sure.

              Thank you.

Something very surprising has popped up now. I took the pics of the front brakes pads and it seems like they are still the same. As the front brake pads are sintered ones, do the rate of degradation for them is lower compared to the normal OE ones at the rear.

Please take a look at the pics. It seems like I don't use the front brakes at all which is not the case. Also I have never replaced the front brake pads till date.

Yes the front wears lesser compared to the rear. My bike is 20k old and I have replaced the rear twice and now they are completely worn out need to replace asap but I have changed the front only once at around 14k kms something and they are still good for another year or so.

Btw my front disc is completely smooth with no grains but the rear has marks on them.. I have not ridden them wornout pads either.

Sintered pads last longer than organic ones at the rear, and by default front pads last slightly longer even if used extensively. The fact that your rear is worn sooner can be due to pads constantly rubbing the rotor and also you unknowingly resting your foot on the brake pedal which would mean it's mildly engaged all the time, leading to accelerated wear. Your front pads are the sintered ones so don't bother replacing it, and you have decent pad material left for lot of KMs to come.

                  Cheers!

Seems like it is the case on my bike. Will replace the rear pads to the OE ones asap.
By the way are we still able to pin point the sound coming from the rear side of the bike, mostly from under the seat.
Is it 100 percent due to the chain getting loose or is it something else.

In between someone has posted about the rear shock absorber being the culprit. Every time I take it the service center they will tighten the chain and the sound will be gone for few days and after some days it starts again.

Also will inquire if they have started rolling out the TFT Software update for the 2018 models for updated UI on the TFT Screen. I hope it has come.
Would be nice to have all the small issues like the clock becoming slow after somedays issue ironed out.

                    Thank you

replace the rear brake pads , the front ones have plenty of life left in them. yes, the oem rear pads cost around 200.. they are the same as the ones from p220/cbr250. get the oem from svc and you are good to go.
as for troubleshooting sounds, it is difficult to pin point the cause without riding the bike/hearing it. you could maybe check the front sprocket for excessive wear(i.e. the teeth would be worn/pointed and hooked i.e. bent).. this is known to cause a khat khat noise, especially at slow speeds.
