Hi fellow riders, so here goes an account of what happened to my 2017 ktm duke 390 (lovingly called my duchess). On the morning of 4 Jan 2018 I was travelling from Gorakhpur to Delhi. Having done almost 300 km of riding that day the bike stalled and the gear lever was stuck in 6th gear, I was doing 100-120 kmph on the lucknow agra expressway (around 8000 km on the odo). I could also smell something burnt inside the engine and the screen was showing high engine temperature. I suspected the clutch plates to be the culprit. Anyway waited for the engine to cool down, restarted the bike, that's when I noticed some strange noise from the engine area and the gear lever was still stuck. Had no option but to call Ktm lucknow (luckily I was only 30 km outside the city). A tow truck was hired and the bike was taken to Ktm lucknow ring road service centre. The mechanic was not available that day so I had to leave my bike with them. That effectively meant the end of my new year ride even before it could properly begin. With a broken heart I left my duchess there and continued the rest of the journey on a bus. Finally got her back after 5 long weeks. The mechanic claimed that due to faulty oil switch the engine oil was not reaching the over head cams and thus due to over heating they got burnt. Even the gears were broken and he replaced them as well (he had no idea how that could have happened). The clutch plates were fine. What I found rather odd was that the service manager was not willing to share any written evidence of what work was done on my bike. He just said around 22000 rs worth of spares were changed, out of which I had to pay 8000 rs, rest was covered under warranty. He gave me a bill for those 8000rs. So after 10000rs from pocket (2000 rs for tow truck and 8000 service centre), a ruined trip, and 5 long painful weeks, I got my bike back. I have done almost 1000 km since then, no issues have cropped up again till date.

My two cents - don't believe what the service centres tell you, investigate yourself- most people said the low engine oil pressure light is a software issue, turns out there was actually a problem with my bike's oil switch, and ignoring the light, on the advice of service centres, cost me big.

Is it really true that Ktm doesn't share details of work carried out under warranty? I as an owner would like to know exactly what work was done on my bike and why.

PS- got a puig windscreen last week, seems a good addition to the bike and is really helpful in cutting out the windblast. Got it from ultimatespares.com (not affiliated to them in anyway). Also I have installed front fork sliders, rear swing arm sliders, radiator guard, and exhaust guard from Bikers Billet. Bought these from amazon.in. The quality of their work is just awesome (again, not affiliated to them in any way, just a fan of good quality workmanship). Still looking for some decent crash guards and auxiliary lights, would appreciate a headsup on the same.
Sorry to hear this .

Didn't the console show any type of warning before getting stalled ?

No warning, except the low oil pressure light, which I ignored thinking it was a software glitch, turns out the bike was actually trying to tell me something

One quick question.

The old 390's console had tons of information, but I am not able to see anything in the new TFT.

Only avg speed, dte, fuel efficiency are dislayed. And also we have the option to set the engine temperature to either Celsius or Fahrenheit but not able to see it anywhere in the TFT !

Any suggestions ?

Rims paint comes off if you rub it with a cloth on KTM Duke 390 2017 model

Bro, I think every 2017 390 out there has this problem. I personally checked the lot of KTM showroom and found almost every bike has this issue.

And also I got an explanation that it is normal [emoji19]

Then you can do it to a car and the color goes off or to another bike from another manufacturer.

In case we had a brake failure to all the duke 390 we would say "it is normal"?
You cannot say normal what it's wrong from the begining to all the bikes of this model.

Yeah , I even tried to explain to the SA that this is not normal. But unfortunately everytime this is the explanation that I get.

Sir, did you check the engine oil level after seeing the low oil pressure light come up?

Yeah I did, even topped up 300 ml before the ride, the problem it seems was not the amount of oil present, rather the oil was not circulating properly

Then it should have been fixed totally under warranty. I guess the service manager has taken you for a ride.

He charged me only for labour and consumables, and gave a bill of 8000 rs for that, and he claimed spares worth 14000 rs were changed under warranty for which he gave no receipt or written proof

Labor under warranty is supposed to be free afaik.

I understand this is why you should make an impact in social media etc about this.
They ignore you by this reply, you should raise the issue in social media and especially with messages to official KTM account, i already made a contact to KTM
to this page Contact and i already sent a tweet to the official KTM account https://twitter.com/dinomaganaris/st...18179207004161 this way they may be forced to do something, because they are losing potential clients who think to buy the bike but they see the bike has problems like this.

Do you think that the big Duke would have this issue? who would spend 18.000 euros and would listen to the seller that it is normal the paint to wear off ???
