  • Hi Guys..!!

Recently I went to Service Center due to that self start problem i mentioned about a month back or two...(Can't make if earlier due to personal reason which made my bike just standing in garage for a month..)

Problem: Self-Start making BANG sound at the time of startup..

1st Day at Service Center: Went in told him the problem and then he asked another person to confirm the parts and all...

He told me to go and register the complain. I asked him what was the problem, he said that something about one-way clutch and about changing frywheel. (now please tell me if there are any parts inside the bike like this and all..!! ) He told me that they will change it...
Then i went to register my complain and he said that there are enough bike for today inside the service center so I may come tomorrow.

2nd Day at Service Center: As told to me the day before, went to svc and the guy there ONE MORE TIME refused to take the bike and telling to come once again tomorrow..!!

3rd Day at Service Center: Went there and left my bike there at morning 10. And took it back at 4. And poof!! The problem was gone...but..!! a new problem arised..! My Tachometer...it is working fine till 4-5k reading and then it starts rushing very fast...I mean when i accelerate to about say 7k the tacho would be showing about 11k

Any suggestions what can be done of that...???

Price Involved in Repair: The only best part... Rs.0/-

Yes the problem indicates that there is a problem with the one-way clutch. Did they replace it. Don't leave your bike at the service center because those guys cannot be trusted. And replace the speedo console too.

If they have replaced the parts then ask them to show you your old parts which they replaced to check if they have really replaced.

They said that they replaced it. I don't know if they actually did coz my friend went and took the bike. But ya that sound and all the type of problem is gone that's why I think that they might have replaced cause before going to Showroom i asked a local mechanic about how big is the problem and he said that only replacement is the answer to this...

One thing they did was took out some petrol out of my bike..
First time they did and even told my friend that they took fuel out...!!

Small amount though so doesn't matter me.
Next time I will be Careful about all this thing.
Thanks, this time i was really careless..

And @renny is there no other thing which can be done..? coz i will hate seeing zero again at odo...

No, the speedo's of RTR are prone to give problems, and changing them under warranty is a good/only/wise solution.

              • I wonder...dont any of you guys owning 180's have a tappets knocking problem when the engine heats up? It irritates the hell out of me

Not at all intrusive with the helmet on. Though when speeds build up i can hardly notice it.

Ask the svc ppl to adjust the tappets keeping the clearance in mind.Don't over tighten it as it will rob off the performance.

                  • the SVC guys say, they cannot tamper with the tappets until the 2nd service is done...which i thought was bullsh1t...they indirectly meant i have to live wid the damn sound for more 1.5k Kms

How much kms has your bike covered?

Yes, it's a normal practice to touch the tappets only after the bike has covered 2-2.5k kms!!

But if the tappets are making serious loads of noices and if it's affecting performance they can be adjusted at 5kms too.

                        PS:
The RTR has loose tappets setting, so when the bike gets hot, they ring like bells.

                        • Got the speedo restarting problem fixed by a roadside mechanic. It took barely 20 minutes. He said the wires were getting 'short'. I dont know exactly what he meant but the thing is working absolutely fine now. The svc guys asked me to keep the bike for at least a day at the svc to fix this problem. Damn them
You can only ride better tomorrow if you ride safe today.

                            DON'T TOUCH YOUR TAPPETS!

Unless there's something seriously wrong in the setting. I was really irritated by the noise too and asked him to set them, within spec of course, to reduce the noise. I clearly remember the manager telling the mech to set it with the gauge. Obviously, the fcker didn't. Damn thing ran like a splendor. And the noise didn't even reduce much. I had to leave it overnight, and pick it up the next day. But it lost the refinement it had before they fiddled with it. But right now, just learn to live with the noise and vibration AND performance, and vow never to buy a tvs bike again till they learn to produce decently refined bikes. So once again, the tappets, if they ain't broke, don't touch em.

Well it depends on the workmanship of the mechanic fiddling with the bike. Two of my friends have a 160 carb and the Fi and they hardly have any disconcerting tappet noise. They are quiet smooth too and are hoot to ride. And on the other hand one of my friend at Blore is having hard time in dealing with vibrations/noise issues.

Even my 180 had 'extra' tappet noise during 2k-3k kms period. They altered the tappet settings and now it's much more smoother. The bike has already covered 10k kms and it's still as smooth.Which means that the quality of the work directly reflects on the bike's performance. So, let's not generalise things. I didnt even know about "adjusting a tappet" until i visited RTR thread in xBhp. My Victor's tappets were touched only after 53k kms almost after 7 n 1/2 years of usage!!

But RTRs do have more unrefined character than other bikes in the market.

Tappets are serious issues, and in case of RTR it has loose tappet setting, my bike still has, i didnt got it the first place and i was after my mech riend to tighten them, but he kept on refusing, finally he tried experimenting the settings of tappets on another RTR and RTR FI, and he came up with a conclusion that the setting my bike is running is actually perfect as he tighten the tappets of another FI which robbed the performance of the machine and that bike was running like "blunted".

Still the setting i have, he opened the cover and checked the tappets by rotating the piston by opening the black cover which is on the gearbox side, and refuced to set it, earlier i though may be the springs in there might be the culprit, but they seemed to be perfectly fine too.

My bike never "rings" when the engine is cold but the moment it is run 8-10kms the tappets start to ring like anything accompanied by a very rough sound of the engine post 7000RPM.

The tappets noice in RTR is somewhat like the tappets are not getting oil and they are running dry, i even had this doubt in my mind, so i also got my external oil linings checked and they were perfectly fine, and i was very much satisfied after seeing the tappets in oil when their cover was open.

Though FIERO and RTR share almost the same engine architecture, still the RTR engine is very rough, and that accompanied by that tappet noice makes it sound like it has done some 70-80K's.My FIERO was never this rough even at 25000 kms.
