Yes. I thought about the point you mentioned that new 180s & 160s are getting more troublesome. My friend got his rtr's bore piston replaced at 37k kms last November. His bike was just 2 years old then. But my another colleague's cbz extreme (one with the integrated turn indicators ) has clocked 92k kms in 5 years & he has touched the engine a bit. Seems older gen rtr engines were more reliable

Thanks for the detailed reply. BTW, you answered the questions I posted after your post tooOriginally posted by Abishek94 View PostAlert: Relatively long post ! :P
Do you feel that the choice of your oil could have had some impact? I too was using Shell AX7 till ~18K on the odo, but switched to TVS synthetic after that as the OEM synthetic oil gave me peace of mind. Don't you want to use the TRU4 synthetic this time?
I too share the same gripe about the lack of sixth gear. Under gearing is one if the reasons why I decided to stay away from the highway after 18-20K km. The bike screams at high RPM around 100 and the thought of stress on the engine alone brings down all the enjoyment. So, my bike hasn't had sustained high RPM rides since a long time. But sees redline upshifts 5-10 times a day. I settle into cruising mode around 5K RPM after that though. Thankfully, there hasn't been any dip in oil level till now.
If that's the case, it's a pretty big concern. That's worse than even the older gen Pulsars which had gained notoriety for quality and reliability issues.Originally posted by Mr_Many_Places View PostYes. I don't think choice of oil plays such a huge role in life of engine. If its a well known company and has required approvals (jaso ma2 etc etc..) we can safely rule out the oil factor.
I'm staying away from the tvs synthetic oil as its W30 grade which may not suffice for long hours on the highway! I've always stuck to w40 grade for the same reason. Also, on my bike, oil change is done without fail every 2.8k-3k kms along with oil filter change.

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Just came back from a weekend ride from hills. Performed very good in hills as usual but when it comes to stop and go traffic it heats up a lot, even with AX7.Fare thee well xBhp, All the best for being the biggest name in corporate world

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Mine gave up after 19K odo.the oil wears out very quickly 1500-2000 kms max.i was shocked when my mech said that the bore-piston kit had to replaced because there was no oil in bike when i just poured in shell advance semi synthetic and the biked had just clocked 3000 kms.My friends R15 lasts about 4000 kms with the same oil and with the same kind of city highway usage.
Yes the RTR badly needs a 6th Gear, also a liquid cooled set up would be a dream!!!
RTR is much more of a city bike than a highway bike.

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
I too was thinking that way when using AX7, but then again, if a manufacturer is recommending a particular grade and has developed their new oil in the same grade too, there's gotta be a reason right? Also, I remember reading a post on this forum a few years back which suggested that it's better to change AX7 every 2000km. Will try to look for the link to that post.Originally posted by Abishek94 View PostI don't think choice of oil plays such a huge role in life of engine. Initially when the rtrs were launched, recommended grade was w40.. And even the manual says w40.
Over the years they started selling w30 oil as tvs oil and hence recommended grade was changed to w30 without any change in the engine internals. If anything, w30 oil would provide lesser protection during prolonged engine operation in comparison with a thicker w40 oil.

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Yes
I have experienced this too with the tvs oil. After day of highway ride the engine really smells hot. The gearshifts become rock hard but due to the lesser viscosity of this oil there is a noticeable improvement in the mileage. Around 45 cruising around 85 but at the cost of the engine life . With shell the engine runs a bit cooler & make less noise over a day of highway ride & w40 oil protects the engine better than tvs oil as well. Mileage though is around 40. But i am very much happy getting 40kmpl from a 17 bhp engine & cruising at 80. Better than using tvs oil & ruining your engine life.TVS Apache RTR 180 (2014 - ….)

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Hello Apache-ians,, does anyone have internal photos of rtr combustion chamber.. The squish area etc ? I want to know about the internal shape and depth of that area. Since a few of you have done the bore piston change, so can anyone provide these pics ? Mine went off after spiti trip (2011) and its been off since then, the only negative is pebbles and stones hitting the exhaust pipe. Positive, one less place to cleanOriginally posted by Abishek94 View PostJust removed the engine guard from my bike and I'm sort of liking the new look. It will be off for a while now :P
Edit: Not exactly engine guard, but the belly pan below the engine.
