Hero spares quality has deteriorated badly.

Engine oil drain bolt sheared today. I never over torque the same. I hand tighten the bolt and then twist it by 1/2 a turn. That's it. Once the engine heats up, it seals good.

I have seen people who use all their might on the puny drain bolt.

But, then this happened today. Luckily I got my spare quickly.

But Divya, how did you extract the thread piece? It should have caught itself in the crankcase. Your ZMR sees more (double?) oil changes than the average one that visits the SVC - that would be one probable reason.

Happens to most vehicles reaching the service life your bike has seen. However it amazes me that even your bike which sees such tender loving care ended up with a busted cap. Thank your stars that the thread in the crank case didnt slip...

How does my bike see twice the number of oil changes?
I change oil between 2k to 2.5k km.

The stuck piece was unscrewed with a simple plier (held from the inside) and rotated in the intended direction.

Yes, despite whatever care you may take, things go wrong. Plus, this is after I keep changing drain bolts voluntarily. Sadly, no doc on earth can't help me with this.

This happens when you use a ring spanner which many feel is the ideal tool. I use a socket bit and rod extension, and before I unscrew it I give the cap a mild knock to free it's threads from jam. SVC use powered impact wrenches. Basically it's light aluminum and is very vulnerable to lose shape, unlike Bajaj pulsars steel bolt. better to swap this cap at the slightest indication of head damage with the oring

Yes. In fact after 7-8 oil changes, this aluminium bolt starts slipping from the head portion. The quality is so bad it almost feels soft.
So I change it by the 5th oil change myself.

                  I use an L shaped 17mm wrench.

Indeed the quality has dipped Divya Bhai :-( . Had a similar issue few months back, So have stocked few drain bolts , O-rings and change the bolt on every 2nd or 3rd oil change.

I thought this was the OE drain plug - didn't know you changed it every 7-8 oil changes.

Twice? Actually a bit more than that . A 1 lakh run ZMR would see 17 oil changes according to Hero's recommended schedule of 6000 km, 25 if a person follows 4000 km service interval as many guys I know service their bikes every "x" months. At 1 lakh, your ZMR should have seen 35+ oil changes, actually a little bit more as you changed the Rimula at 1800 kms.

                      All this in paper (theory).

Actually the way it has sheared, that would happen even if he used a hex socket, no?

Ah, that way! But 6k km for that crappy tide water mineral oil is way too much. It's just a ploy to make money and sell spares.

Yes, that's why I also did mention about hitting the drain cap lightly and also change the drain cap periodically.

Tide Water = water in disguise of an oil. I wonder how it passed all the test runs for 6000 kms. I have used that oil in my Eterno once (changed by local mechanic), barely held itself for 3000 kms.

This is what happened when my friend's zimmer drain cap was opened using a ring spanner without hitting it first to loosen thread jam. It kept on losing hex shape and finally I had to use a chisel to unscrew it for him. The one next to it is from my bike which was replaced because it was out of shape. Hero parts are not deteriorating but the puny aluminum drain cap does not do justice for its purpose.
Another interesting thing which I recently found out, was that both the drain cap and the tappet cover are one and the same but come in differently labeled packs. So stocking a few wouldn't do any harm as tappet adjustment and oil changes are very routine. Not sure if others are aware of this.
