Karizma DIY servicing.
Hi guys, I am not getting time to take my bike to the servicing center, so decided to go the DIY route!!
These are the things I would want to do:
1. Change the engine oil(duh!!).
2. Clean the oil filter.
3. Clean / replace air filter
4. Clean / replace and adjust the spark plug
5. Clean and lubricate the chain-sprocket
6. And ofcourse, I shall get the water washing outside.
7. Get the wheel alignment checked and adjusted.
8. If possible I will get the bent wheels repaired!!
9. Planning to change the stock rear indicators to clear indicators that of Pulsar!!
Any other points I should look into?
The carb doesnt require any adjustment I guess, I am getting very good FE - around 42kmpl consistently.
I dont intend to do all the above is a single go for the lack of time. I would be doing one or two at a time.
Regarding points no.1 and 2, how to go about it??Cheap and Reliable is not Fast, Cheap and Fast is not Reliable, Fast and Reliable is not Cheap!

Hi Rajasekar,
Here are my thoughts,
1. Engine oil change: If u have a right spanner of size, its damn easy. Just get under, find that nut and have a tray to collect the old oil. some people use petrol to flush the engine. Use it if u feel like otherwise, drain till ur heart's content
and then fill in new oil after fixing the drain nut.
2. Oil filter: comes out with the drain nut. Easy to clean. Its of a mesh type, so u can probably soak it in some warm water and use a toothbrush to clean. If u have some petrol, u can use that also to clean.
Also,
try checking the nuts and bolts on the fibers,
lubricate levers,
tighten brakes,
scrub discs with Scotch Brite if u feel the discs are oily or dirty,
Clean the grime on the centre and side stand (if dirty)
Check fuses
Coat battery terminals with Vaseline
thats all I can think of broNever Argue with an Idiot !!!

Buddy, if ur interested, I can even schedule an appointment for ur bike next week... Also, the bike can be picked up and dropped at ur place.. Cuz that is how I got my bike done. I just drop it in his house, after a day or two depending upon the Q, i get my bike delivered to my home...

I agree with Suru. U live somewhere near Cheran Managar/Hopes area. Williams is our guy, His garage is less than 4km from where ur located. He will come and pick it up from you and deliver it at your doorstep.Originally posted by Suru View PostNot getting time????

Thanks for the fantastic inputs Ranjith.
Right spanner, now what is that?? Is it part of the tool kit??Originally posted by Coplay@180 View PostHi Rajasekar,

Flush in the sense, after draining the oil, pour in some petrol so that any residual oil is washed off?? I think one liter petrol should be good enough!! Is it safe to flush the engine with petrol?? I suppose this has to be done with the engine off
. Else I will be asking questions about DIY replacing the bore and piston.............. lol
Oh damn!! Yes tray!! I completely forgot about that. I shall buy a plastic one from the local plastic items store!!Originally posted by Coplay@180 View PostJust get under, find that nut and have a tray to collect the old oil. some people use petrol to flush the engine. BTW, how to dispose the used oil?? Also can this oil be used for anyother purpose?? May be like lubricating the chain or something like that!! Or may be as a fuel for some home made lamp!!!.... lol
One more thing, I am particular about HH Idemitsu oil!! i dont want to go to the HH guys if they have this oil!! BTW, is the Petronas Sprinta 5000 available in Coimbatore. If yes where can I buy it??
Tomorrow, I am moving into the place I have rented. Its located in Kovai Tirunagar(lane opposite to Skoda showroom on Avinashi Road near KMCH)Originally posted by Coplay@180I agree with Suru. Ya man, I goto office(5km) at 8 in the morning. After going home in the evening, we are going out buy some stuff or the other!! Also I need the bike to go home for lunch in the afternoon!!Originally posted by Suru View PostNot getting time????

I think I have to try this route after I move to my new abode!!Cheap and Reliable is not Fast, Cheap and Fast is not Reliable, Fast and Reliable is not Cheap!

I give for service regularly, at the same time I do small maintenance myself. Been doing that since new. I never let service people change oil. So here couple of thing I can help. See below.
Yeeks! colour is quite painful anyway.....Originally posted by kkrk2 View PostHi guys, I am not getting time to take my bike to the servicing center, so decided to go the DIY route!!
Good for you. Motorcycle owners should know how to do basic maintenance themselves.
These are the things I would want to do:
1. Change the engine oil(duh!!).
At the bottom of the left side of the engine, there is the drain nut. Unscrew it and drain the oil. Note: There is a spring and netting inside. Once the nut come loose, the oil will rush out and may push out the spring and netting, though don't worry, its easy to put them back. Use commonsense to collect the drained oil.
2. Clean the oil filter.
Never saw oil filter in Zma-R. I don't know if the netting inside is being referred as 'oil filter', then its just a matter of taking them out and cleaning them with petrol and let it dry. I do that once in a long while.
3. Clean / replace air filter
I use high air pressure to clean my air filter (carwash garage has them). Its not perfect but most effective for paper filter. After 15k I changed my air filter. Already has two new spares for the next 30k
4. Clean / replace and adjust the spark plug
I let service people do this.
5. Clean and lubricate the chain-sprocket
I have removed chain guard. Reason - Easier to clean + adjust tension. I use WD40 spray, brush, and piece of cloth to clean them and apply gear oil using a lubricating bottle about once in a month. Once in a while I remove whole chain and clean them thoroughly and soak them in gear oil in a small container.
6. And ofcourse, I shall get the water washing outside.
Watchman clean bike daily. Once in a while, I take it to carwash garage and clean it thoroughly.
7. Get the wheel alignment checked and adjusted.
If you mean the rear wheels. All I do is use the guides markers to align attached on the rear wheel axle. Next use eyesight to see if everything is looking okay. Perhaps not precision method, nevertheless better than simply letting it be
.
8. If possible I will get the bent wheels repaired!!
No idea. Me I would get a new one.
9. Planning to change the stock rear indicators to clear indicators that of Pulsar!!
New Zma comes with clear indicators, get them.
Any other points I should look into?
Check/adjust Chain slack, it gets loose after riding. Google or refer manual to see correct chain slack.
Check/Adjust clutch cable, this also tend to get loose after long use or break. Loose cable will also result in hard gear shift because clutch is not being fully engaged.
Check/Refill/Clean battery.
The carb doesnt require any adjustment I guess, I am getting very good FE - around 42kmpl consistently.
I dont intend to do all the above is a single go for the lack of time. I would be doing one or two at a time.

Get your battery and charging unit checked. In zma it happens if your battery is not properly holding charge.Originally posted by 1235sam View PostGuys I am facing one strange issue since last few days - the trip meter and the clock gets reset when I start the bike. This happened 4,5 times during last 2 months
