My God !! So much discussion for R3. Good that I made a fantastic decision.

Well completed around 350 kms on my R3 and till now I'm only smiling. This bike perfectly suits my needs. Like cruising at a good speed for Indian roads, good handling, not as crisp as R15 or RC390, as it is not intended also, and nice flickability. I didn't have to try hard to switch weights at the corners. Bike is fantastic in choc-a-bloc traffic, people from B'lore will know that for sure. I being a 5'7" and not so physically strong person, never felt any need of strength while riding/manoeuvring the bike through the ugliest traffic. So being not overly bulky is good for the bike to be termed as 'Everyday Superbike'.

Well coming to the looks department, getting stared is not a common phenomenon for R3. People who knows stare at it and admire the beauty but people who don't know doesn't. This is actually good from being asked repeated questions from people and also from unwanted attention. I always wanted people to stare at my R15 but after getting a costlier bike I don't want the same for R3. It's better for people like us but for posers it'll certainly be a not-so-good thing.

Acceleration and braking are both linear. Though I think the brakes could be a bit better which may be changed using metal braided lines.

Personally I felt the R3 exhaust to be a bit more heavy than N300.

Overall I'm too happy with the bike and I'm going to stick for it for many years down the line. And yes it's very comfortable and long distances will be a more enjoyable thing now.

Thanks to saquib3005 , I too got a test ride of the beauty I waited for more than an year and went with Ninja 300.
yes, she was late to arrive, but she doesnt show that. The bike is perfect . Though, its not as smooth as a ninja, even the clutch or gear, I dont think any Yamaha is smooth like a Honda or a Kawasaki , but after riding the N300 for more than an year, the difference was felt immediately as I munched in some distance on the R3. The suspension is softer than the Kawasaki, especially with a pillion, u can understand that very easily. But the engine is just like the R15. R15 is not as smooth as the CBR150R, nor is the R3 smoother than the Ninja. I think Yamaha wants to make it that way. Those who wants it, will get it. But one thing I noticed is that I wasnt able to do 35kmph on 6th gear on the R, but who cares .
The brakes felt better than the Ninja, the tyres well, I cant comment. Its on par with the IRC's if not better. In just simple words, its more like Yamahas version of Ninja 300.

But again I have no complaints against it. Just that it came too little too late for me and I am happily married with its green rival . And looks differ from one person to another. So no point in speaking about it. And since both are priced at around 30k difference, I feel the Yamaha fans will be going with the R and te green fans will turn the other way because I dont think one is better than the other. Just perfectly balanced bikes , like both were made together so that both will sell to their respective fan following.
The only thing I am happy is that , those who bashed the Ninja for being overpriced will not be opening their mouth as big as they used to.

Also attaching some pics of the MT-15, which shares many parts with the R15 v3(no, not the R15-s) including an USD fork.

Perfect summery , i agree all of your point except the bolded one [personally i felt the other way]
Still i stick to my words , R3 is no poser bike , its a compact practical bike with lot of potential , it will find takers who are true bikers in a sense

Well I am not sure about that. Certainly the wheels, discs, swing-arm etc are directly from R15

Well, everyone has their own characters.
I dont think a new thread is needed now. Once more details flow in only its needed I guess.

Hi ArnabC Congratulations!

What rubber is the R3 on? MRF?
What is the engine running in period and instructions?
Service intervals?

Just curious.

Anybody from Kerala/Trivandrum were able to see the bike in any showroom? Not sure which all dealers got the bike. Yamaha website doesn't show any particular dealer name for R3.

My pleasure Ivin, but I guess we qrr lucky only because Pacer is giving test rides that too on the airport road stretch and others are not giving.

Regarding performance of bike, again it can add up to controversy/discussion/debate, but how much I felt, the character of riding R3 is as agile as what Yamaha has been but comparison with others is again a subjective and depends on person to person comparison.

And moreover r15vs cbr150 is again a subjective even with listening lot of criticism from CBR owners also and that count is big and not only handful.

Though I never liked the torque of R15 but happy to see a good amount of low end torque of R3.

Lastly guess you rode the r3 which has not completed any run in and moreover everyday any poser is coming there to take test ride who are way different than you and me how we ride these bikes. This again influences performances and handling of that particular.

Rather I would like to quote ArnabC who is riding his R3 almost everyday though for shorter distance and he is happy to see that gearbox is gelling and getting refined day by day.

Off course N300 would be better rather in this segment it was my favourite but again having a slipper clutch does add the benefit to swift handling, easy clutch play and gear handling too.

I am waiting for coming Sunday when both the R3 owners from Bangalore would be completing there runin by then and there will be a proper extensive review.

PS: Got to know today that 10w40rating oil would be used in R3. And general service parts have arrived in Bangalore. So owners can finish there runins soon.

Almost everyone says the price difference between N300 and R3 is 30k in Bangalore. I had visited Jayanagar showroom and was told on-road price is 3.82 (including comprehensive insurance i think), whereas N300 is 4.3 - doesn't it make the difference almost 50k?

For me the bike looks good, can easily differentiate from R15. About 3 bikers just slowed down screaming 'oila..new R3!' and moved on. So, think people who are bike enthusiasts will not be confused. I had seen people who felt/said that Harley 750 looks like Avenger.. Even some review's said Ninja 300 looks better than N650. End of the day, its personal choice I guess. Blue colour looks bigger than black - wish red colour was available in India

TD vehicle was not available yet, may be I can get one next weekend. Eagerly waiting for ownership review

• First Ride Report:

Got the delivery of my Black Beast yesterday evening. First impressions, din't take any more thn a couple of kms to get used to the riding stance or the weight or the power delivery of the R3.
Comparisons between the Ninja's ,KTM's have been done in plenty before, so wont be getting into that side. But,I've upgraded from a R15 version 1(assuming many of the members will be doing so too) so i'll keep the R15 as a reference and review the bike.
Rider/Pillion Comfort: Its on par if not better then the younger sibling. Riding stand is much more relaxed and suited for daily commuting/fairly long rides. People upgrading from the R15 V2 will definitely praise this aspect. Sadly, same cannot be said about the pillion. The rear seat, though is more comfortable then the V2, but is no match for the v1 pillion. The rear saddle feels hard and no grab rails don't help its case any further. Summary: People considering the R3 with two up top for most of the rides, kindly give this point a thought. I've my R15 for another couple of years more to give company to the R3, so atleast my wife wouldnt be complaining about being uncomfortable.
Engine/The Ride itself: It was a 14 kms odd ride from Parel(Mumbai) to my house in heavy to heavy traffic initially and easing a bit towards the end of the ride. The engine feels very refined and gear shifts compliment the smooth nature of the engine. The shifts are slick and chances of skipping a gear or not finding neutral are next to none. The clutch feels just as it should, not being too heavy as in the case of BenelliT300 or even the Z250 to some extent.
In traffic situations, a new rider might feel the heat dissipation to be uncomfortable, but to ones upgrading from the younger sibling, doesnt feel much of a difference. Most of the hot air is directed towards the calf and the foot. Riding it with just slippers would make the rider loose some mass from their feet.
The fan doesn't show its presence until the bike is running at speeds below 10kmph(just a 50kms experience in 12hrs since i got her). The fan does sounds louder thn the R15 and also the CBR250, nothing to complain about just an observation.
Getting the bike to turn, lean a bit doesnt take any more efforts thn on the r15. does inspire confidence in the rider to push it a bit more.
Summary: A definate and more thn able, upgrade from the younger sibling with more power, Smoother engine, "The Big Bike Feel", without compromising on the rideability, nimbleness, flickability of the younger yammie. The V1 felt a bit dead in lower revv bands to many(not me), they wont be complaining about the same on this one for sure..Av
Instrument Cluster/Information: Pretty useless to mention as its been read by most. just in brief: Odo- Trip Meter- trip1 - trip2 - Avg Fuel Consumption(in L/100kms), Instantaneous Fuel Consumption, and F-(to inform when in reserve). Gear Indicator, Oil Change Indicator, Temperature Bars(no actual engine temp), Fuel Bars, the Analogue Tacho and a digital Clock. Just wanted to know from fellow Owners, does it have a Gear Shift indicator as well( wherein the white light blinks to let the rider to know when to upshift)? Summary: All the information that you would require while riding. A lot more informative then the R15's instrument cluster.
Misc: More or less everything covered from my observations for 50kms and now 16hrs. More details will take time as i amworking this weekend as well. I found it to be a perfect upgrade for my liking and expectations. Wouldnt turn massive amount of heads like it did when the R15 first arrived in July'08. But that's a blessing in disguise, coz only the informed Janata would be inquiring and starring at your bike and wouldn't attract unnecessary fiddling around by pranksters.
I hope i've covered most points for pple upgrading from its 150cc sibling or others wanting to upgrade fromt their small displacement bikes, and sorry for those who would have wanted a comparision between its actual rivals coz i couldn't have done it without having riden anything other the Tnt300 from its space..
Thanks and cheers..!!
Regards,
Karan.

Your words more valuable as you have been riding R15 v1. I have good regard for R15 v1 as it was light, small and power pack.

My question to you, How you feel about fuel tank when you ride? since R15 v1 have metal tank, does it feel different?
