Adding extra oil, you mean 2T right? Yeah, I do that. But my worry is more on transmission oil front.
Why do you suspect the tranny? If you have used proper clearances during boring and used a good quality piston, it shouldnt heat up that much. Will wait for the pics. I use Motul 5100 and it does a great job for atleast 8k kms.

    • I've replaced the cylinder piston kit with OE. That comes with ART piston.

Suspecting transmission because, the heat on crankcase covers is more than usual. Also, after riding for 10-12 kms, the gearshifts become notchy. Not as bad as it was couple of weeks earlier, but still the quality of gearshifts after riding 10kms goes down a bit.

I must also add here that I've NEVER run-in a brand new bike or a full engine job done bike. So, my measure of 'more than usual' maybe exaggerated.

I will post post the pics this evening else tomorrow morning. I think pics taken in the morning will be clearer?

        • @Nitin:- FYI.. I already read your post stating that he has clocked 450 odd kms. Also, 1000kms break-in is not hard and fast rule. It also depends on riding style and the break in is not exactly 1000kms but for the safer reason. It is expected that we change gearbox oil at first 500kms to remove any metal particles deposit in the oil. Infact, not all the time we follow the procedures per book. I suggested to try running the bike with extra oil to have a smooth bedding of moving parts inside. This comes from my experience and it was proved worthy. Now, perception, opinions and experience differs from person to person and it is upto the individual how to want to proceed.

To your issue, try changing the oil to recommended grade and also run the bike with extra 2T oil. This would help also help in reducing the heat.

O.E Japanese plates should last more than 25k kms.

I would also like to add something here, the previous owner of my 5S has clocked 66k kms on stock clutch plates & still found it to be usable for a couple of "k" kms.

P.S. He had got a very sane riding style by nature.

Point noted. Will change the oil tomorrow/Sunday to Yamalube (lying at home) later switch over to Valvoline Premium 4T/Agip/Something else @1000kms.

Neither me nor my dad could open the spark plug Damn this has been torqued way too much. Will visit a garage tomorrow morning/evening and take pics.

W.r.t to dafc's query on stock clutch plate, my (actually my dad's) RX100 has run 1,50,000kms on the plates that came along with the bike. It has seen all kinds of riding styles, Learner, sane riding, learner, maniac ripping, idle for 2-3 years, sane riding Still going strong and runs much much more trouble free than my 'restored' bike with 'new' parts.

When you happen to put back the plug see to it that it is not turned more than 2 times hand tight after. This would help not repeat such situation as you are facing today.

Awesome Nitin. These days spares quality result in prematures earlier than it's stated life. I believe those plates speaks volumes of quality and would not be surprised if that happened to be Japanese.

hey Nitin (hope it is apt to call you that!) I am afraid that is not a plug chop and yes you are running rich. If the run in is not done yet please don't mess with the jetting because during run in plugs will show up as if they were running rich it is only after run in the "true color" shows up

                          • Slightly rich but for the run in it should be ok. How about using a normal BPR7HS during run-in? Try a plug chop on the new plug.

The proudest moment is when I read the following in my RD350 manual ....

Fitted with world famous Fujiyama life-long clutch (Minimum life 50,000 kms) ... and I can vouch for that ... I have had 3 engine rebuilds and done around 70k kms on my RD ... never changed the plates .... and god knows if the last 3 owners changed the plates or not ...

Odes to the build quality of the Yamahas ...
