i doubt how many of those catcon.s are serving the purpose.it is relatively cheap to get a catcon compared to the normal one cause many are getting rid of it. many opt for catcon.s as a desperate attempt to some how make the bike run after thier exhaust get badly dented rusted etc..Originally posted by sanjithjoseph View PostLast edited by satishg; 09-25-2011, 09:32 AM.

The Catcon silencers came with a noble metal (either gold or platinum) coating on the inside to work with benzene additives that are put in petrol to increase the octane number.Originally posted by sanjithjoseph View PostI have seen many people going for 'catcon silencers' and I think those silencers got catalytic converters which contributes much to reduce air pollution.
From my little knowledge what I know is 'Catalytic converters' restricts flow of exhaust air which causes a drop in power and pickup(Correct me if anything wrong).
So, why many are trying to get 'catcon' s on their bike?any other +points for 'catcon silencers'?
Yamaha India provided a special 3 year warranty just for the catcon's ability to comply with the exhaust emission norms.
The bottom end and the lower end torque of the bike is significantly improved by the back pressure generated by the catcon

The cost of the catcon was Rs. 8k("full") and Rs 3.8K (without header pipe type)
Catcons are not "relatively cheap" even in the used spares market. Infact they are much sought after by owners whose bikes originally came with catcons.

There is a huge demand for used cat cons these days as many a people prefer to plonk it. And as you mentioned, even used cat cons are not cheap at all. In Mumbai a good condition used cat con with all the heat shields will cost you approx more than Rs.5,500

Yes it is heavy ... but for people with restoration and originality in mind, it is a very important aspect of the bike.Originally posted by dafc View Postmeh if you'd ask me that catcon thingy is stupid and heavy as a brick the old baffle silencer is good
My 5-speed RXZ raises eyebrows simply due to the cat-con.
A 5-speed rx135 or a 5-speed rxz fetches a higher price if u have the cat-con on it.02 Qualis GS

oh well to each his own but up here an RX with baffle has higher market value catcons are a way to spot almost dead and knock like hell RXs. I had that thing on my RX100 for a day when the new RX135 came around I could literally feel the motor chokeRIP ਕਾਕਾ ਭੈਣੀਆਂਵਾਲਾ (Santokh Singh Rataurh)

What I know is, adding 'catalytic converters' are only to meet the exhaust emission norms of the government. They convert toxic exhaust emissions from an internal combustion engine into non-toxic substances, but on the other side they restricts the free flow of exhaust air which causes a drop in maximum speed of the vehicle and hp.This is the fact.
Normally people looking for performance will be removing 'cats' first for a free flow and then working with intake to breath more. Making exhaust air to flow free and intake to breath more are considered to be the first level for performance.
But here in case of RXs I'm getting confused
a lot, because I have seen a great demand for cat silencers for RXs especially RXZ and RX135.

The 1st para was a NEWS to me. Great info alok. And yes i agree on rest of the stuff you have mentioned.Originally posted by sixspeedtwin View PostThe Catcon silencers came with a noble metal (either gold or platinum) coating on the inside to work with benzene additives that are put in petrol to increase the octane number.

To summarize, run a cat-con if you are reverting to factory settings (stock like Ram's 5-Speeder, damn thats one hotty), if going for a modified motor, then stay away from them.Originally posted by sixspeedtwin View PostYes it is heavy ... but for people with restoration and originality in mind, it is a very important aspect of the bike.

A very good maintained cat-con exhaust (big one for sure, the smaller one looks shitty
) sure turns many heads around, especially for 5-speeders.
It is something especially with RX-Z 5-Speed, that the cat-con seems to be like a life partner (sukh-dukh ka saathi) & inseparable. This is the reason i dont like to buy an RX-Z 5-Speed as i can't run a stock machine. I am like that vampire who has tasted the blood of Humans, rabbit blood wont do any good to my thirst!!!!!!!!! LOL

Yes satish, that is gold there. Please preserve them, will fetch you lot of money later on.Originally posted by satishg View Postwov...pardon my ignorence. i am sitting on gold them ? the 4 speed Z which i picked up recently came with a catcon minus header

I dunno if too many people will want the "semi" type ... it only came with the last lot 4-speed RX135s (Production series 4TL6)Originally posted by satishg View Postwov...pardon my ignorence. i am sitting on gold them ? the 4 speed Z which i picked up recently came with a catcon minus header
In your case, see if u can trade it in for the stock RXZ silencer ... That is a better choice for your bike.02 Qualis GS
