Saw it here Spiti India - Getting to Spiti IndiaOriginally posted by L.P. View PostYes! ask the president of india first and an affidavit from the state gov of himachal pradesh.
Shimla to Spiti (via Rekong Peo in Kinnaur) -- the distance from Shimla to Spiti is around 420 kilometers (260 miles). It can be covered in around 20 hours by bus or 16 hours by jeep. The journey is arduous and best broken up by a stop in Rekong Peo. If you take this route, you'll need to get a free Inner Line permit, from the District Collectorate Office in either Shimla or Rekong Peo (the easier option). The permits, which allow travel from Rekong Peo to Tabo, are issued to groups of four or more. Individual travelers should contact a travel agent, or wait for more people to come along to make up the group. .Fare thee well xBhp, All the best for being the biggest name in corporate world

Permits are needed but not by Indian nationals. Its only mandatory for foreigners to have inner line permits. You just need to carry your vehicle papers and a valid DL.Originally posted by prateek2210 View Post

Yes, this has been a very recent move. All non HP registered vehicles need to take a travel permit from the SDM's office in Manali to go to Rohtang. And according to what I was told by my contact in Manali, bikers are NOT exempt. But in case you are riding INTO Manali from Rohtang, then you can come in without conditions. No one is issuing permits at Keylong or LosarOriginally posted by GuRpReEt SiNgH View PostBikers are exempt...
.
Though an inconvenience to most riding enthusiasts, there's a positive edge to it as tourists had really made a mess of the place driving and riding up in any and every vehicle and parking them all over the place. I would agree with anything that decongests Rohtang.

Updates on the Permits for Rohtang:
Procuring the permit is hassle free. The license number and the vehicle registration is required. You get it pretty quickly.
Two-wheelers do-not require a permit.

Moreover this development has caused a huge furore. I donot think that the decision would last long, perhaps it would be tweaked to some extent:

I guess you can safely go with what kurt has stated as the info comes from the proverbial horse's mouth - meaning from someone who has actually been through the process. And I was also told that procuring the permit is pretty hassle-free.Originally posted by Garry_Menace View PostBoth the experts' statements are contradictory (about my question)

i recently came across a new that HP govt has banned the entry of vehicle which are not registered in HP towards rohtang due too the ever increasing traffic to that place . i believe that might be the reason kurts friend went through that process. might not be required for bikes but whats the harm in being prepared . even i will be crossing this route for spiti i hope its easy and less time consuming .
