New Image has been re-uploaded, please check. Didn't know there was a limit to dimension for uploaded images hence the smallness.Originally posted by animeher View Post@kaynmantis: The diagram is bit difficult to see, too small. But from what I could see, the shield should be at bottom in order to have cutoff at top. Means for following setup
darkness
-------cutoff
Light
We should have the shield at lower side. I thought it would be like cap, so it should be on upper side. Can you pls explain?
Yes, shield are at lower side and you get result as you said
Darkness
----------cutoff
..
light
I got your point as to when you cover the the upper side of a ..say a hand held torch, it would seem logical for the upper side to be dark. The diagram has been re-uploaded, it may explain why shield in lower side results in darkness on upper side.

The projector body can be elliptical because the reflector is elliptical, the rest of the projector body is an extension of the reflector. Actually, the rest of the body does not matter whatever shape it may take, and of course the lens is perfectly round. I can't give a scientific answer as to why the "Reflector" has to be elliptical, though it may be to project a specific style of beam effeciently so the lens can re-focus them into a long horizontal spread.Originally posted by animeher View PostThanks for the images
It really helped.
One more question. Why the projector body has to be elliptical when the lens is round in shape?
Generally, a perfectly round reflector as in a torch will give a perfectly focused round spot/throw as in spot light. This throw can be manipulated either by changing the shape of the reflector into oval, elliptical etc. or simply by changing the angle of the reflector's surface. You must have noticed in most modern cars/bikes, the reflector have lots of lines. Each surface between these lines defines how each surface are angled. So instead of having a gentle curve surface, one can have several straight surfaces that are angled in a manner that eventually curves to provide the same effect.
Such a long reply to a simple question
. Anyway, I have seen elliptical foglamps that provides a good spread i.e long in width & short in height. I also have seen perfectly round foglamps that provides a good spread by having the reflector's surface angled in a particular fashion for the same effect.
