I would like to reiterate here the importance of wearing gear while riding with fellow xBhpians in a group ride. It is always safety first and speed next and it is the safety that we are concerned about. We are not asking you to buy expensive gear. Buy what is required.

1. The most important thing is the Helmet. You should buy a helmet that can protect your head from a crash, it should be that solidly framed and comfortable as well. You should try to avoid Half face helmets as because, as per the survey, in a crash, you jaw line take the most of the hit (atleast 31%), you could surf the internet to find more. So we recommend a full face/a good modular helmet.
2. Next comes your riding jacket. Buy a jacket that can give you a protection from a fall. The windcheaters wont do any good. A riding jacket should have armours on your elbows, shoulders and at your back. We have seen riders mentioning this that the windcheaters/jackets with foam is equally good and would save them from fall. This is a wrong assumption and all that jacket can do is keep yourself warm during your ride. Again, you do a survey and then buy a jacket that suits your pocket as well as need.
3. A good pair of riding gloves is a must. It should have knuckle protectors at least because that is the place which gets impacted first when you hit the ground. Woolen gloves just wont do.
4. Last but not the least, a pair of knee guards. This is optional, but it is required to save you from fall as well.

We at xBhpians would appreciate if the riders here takes their time and money, decide the gears to buy and then come for the group ride. As many of us know here, we can allow a rider first time without gear just to get used to the group and be comfortable. But from then onwards it is a 0 tolerance policy. It is a community that wishes well for the riders and it is a community by riders like us. Lets be better at something we are good at, i.e. Riding.

Everyone please follow the drill on riding gears and if someone is found reporting for rides without'em, be ready for concussive shots of humiliation. And yea, no saying 'leather jackets' as excuse - Puny bike owners such as myself are spending on gears and another rider with a bigger machine is cribbing about the expenses; it is inconceivable! So you are saying that you are having a hard time managing cash for gears while you ride an expensive engine, carry 2/3 smartphone/tab to check GPS and a DSLR with a few additional 'bazooka' type lenses - And you expect others to believe that you don't have enough for GEAR, DAFUQ! *ajeeb c@#$!*

Kindly show some compassion and don't come for rides without the minimum, rather spend time on the site learning more. If this continues, official G2G ride plans will look like this in sometime:
This is the plan, come at your will, ride as you like, crash as comfortably as you can, crack your pot just a bit, I don't know you & you don't know me - who gives a fcuk, enjoy, drag, stunt, kill other road-users gracefully etc. And yea, don't forget to flash the xBhp sticker or wake the dead & say that I am a biker, rider & a xBhpian, YOU HEARD ME?!

Phew!

Sorry for being late on this, but I have been wanting to write this from some time. These are real brilliant points Suvra bhai and Chaos bhai. I feel for the group to come up as a reliable and safe group, we need to be strict. There need to be a few rules and this, the riding gears is the top priority one.

While posting the next ride plan, please write up that without riding gears we cant let you ride with us. It is left to the reader to take it in a positive tone or think of all negative stuff he wants. Ultimately it is him/her who will bear the fruits of those thoughts. Missing a few rides for the sake of not having gears is any day better than loosing a few teeth and some bones. I may come out as rude on this one, but I dont want any of my fellow brothers to learn the importance of safety gears the hard way.

Sorry to disappoint but I didn't like the TONE of Udy's post above. The message was right, but the way it was laid down was highly inappropriate!

I have been demanding that everyone be geared from day 1, but I certainly don't have ANY right to question anyone why he doesn't have gears if he has a few smartphones, SLR, lenses etc. That's plain crap IMO! His money, his choices and his preferences!

Hi Guys,

Good to see everyone is keen towards safety and awareness for safety. And most of us welcome each other and inculcate others with good riding habits.
Accepting all the points I would just say to follow all the steps mentioned in my signature before joining for rides, but again mentioning I dont have any rights to stop anyone from doing anything.

Gone are those golden days, when I learned from my seniors and fellow riders by getting prompted on gears from ride1.
I will again just iterate let others come atleast once and let them see how protective and nice and even fashionable it is to have gears and ride with gears.
I am not supporting to be without gear on anyone's 1st ride just telling older members if any one ask, tell them what all possibe safety measures they can follow if they dont have proper riding gear for their 1st ride and after that prompt them.
And so it is good to keep a short ride every month where we can help others to invite and see how good it is to follow safety measures.

Cheers and Rock hard.

A nice idea indeed, Every month's first week we can have a short ride not exceeding 250 Kms for the introduction and inclusion of new members. The first ride(pre-ride session) itself will make things clear in the mind of the new rider as he/she would see all of us geared up. Riding in a formation itself is a skill one needs to learn before being a regular member of G2G's. From the second ride we can increase the ride distance by a bit more and have a pre-ride session explaining the importance of gearing up and following the formation and rules for G2G. When we plan for a long trip at the end of the month, riders with improper gear would have vested interest but will not be allowed to join, this way the concept of being geared up properly will be etched deep in their minds and the itch of not being denied to ride for a long trip would automatically bring them to their senses. Also 2 weekends would give the rider ample time to adjust his/her budget and sort out his/her priorities. The fine line between being strict and being rude should always be kept in mind by the lead of those 2 G2G's too.

We should follow a principle of being strict, disciplined and imposing rather than being rude, insulting and foul-mouthed.
Just a suggestion as I am just a rookie, but this style of mentoring by the seniors worked very well for me.

I was thinking about encouraging couple rides for Bangalore G2G's as many of us would like to have a pillion (automatic speed limiters ;-)) for our rides.

harish.krovvidi hahaha... wow... thanks... im gonna edit that line in a bit myself...

Right, since safety gear issue is on... let me give my two cents too.

I love what jeevan.life has said, and totally agree about not wanting to see my mates and brothers know its importance the hard way.

But I find overdoing it in terms of getting personally cheesed off or angry is a bit over the top... for example... if we are that crazy about riding gear then why isn't 'riding boots' made mandatory? Do all the safety leaders expect that a fall will spare their ankles and feet? Isn't this a little hypocritical? Personally, when I started doing long rides, much before xBhp was in the fray... there was hardly anything in terms of safety gear in the market... Its about inspiring others to wear safety gear by encouragement not force people to wear everything... If we do then I believe we ought to be fully geared up with riding boots too .

That said, I have personally experienced a bad crash that shattered my left arm... A simple normal riding jacket would've saved parts of the upper arm and elbow. At that time, wearing a good helmet itself was something that was considered as being proactively safe... without which I promise I wouldn't be writing here...

Let me tell you guys something that'll help you make that decision of going for safety gear (for guys yet making that choice).

Forget the fact that it might save your life... if an accident like that happens then you'd be feeling lucky even to breathe. But the thorough plus point in wearing safety gear is in the fact that we don't normally face major accidents all the time. A lot of little simple accidents however, do occur... simple skids, simple slow falls while avoiding crazy drivers, simple falls due to oil spills, falls due to cornering, avoidance falls with a sudden lanechanger... in most such circumstances safety gear would mean the difference between you dusting yourself off with something minor or getting yourself admitted to a hospital for something that will not allow you to ride for 3-4 months... For me, that is what counts, i'm a rider - I can fall - I want to be able to get back up and ride without much delay and safety gear allows me that bit of crucial protection to be able to ride onnnn...

Also you get a little more space on the road from oncoming traffic, about 13% more if riders are wearing safety gear... reason being, they see a bigger gorilla as opposed to a smaller chimp coming down the road. Safety gear come with reflector strips which is a big plus again while night riding...

Safety gear also increases rider confidence... for all you speedsters, sprinters, dragsters, stunters, drifters and people addicted to cornering... you all know that rider confidence matters. And you all break rules a couple of times including me... I don't mean the law... I mean the rules to stretch your abilities. Safety gear gives you enough confidence to actually do that professionally... so go challenge yourself and I promise safety gear will only make it more fun.

Personally I have grown to like it a lot now and am on the path of getting fully geared up... and would love my fellow riders to have some such similar approach and start saving for safety gear. (I'm currently saving for boots)... until that time i can only plead and encourage others... after that I will put my riding boots down on the matter...

Cheers fellas.

Good points Shashank, and if you will flip back to previous pages, it has already been decided that each month we are targetting atleast 2 rides comprising a short ride and longer ride, so separate rides or introductory ride wont add so much fun , rather we can use the existing ride plans as of this course.
And I would also suggest, let the past be in past and move ahead and please restrain from any words from which others feel bad. Ignore what others dont like or you feel bad from them, but keep in point you should not repeat the same thing and PLEASE RESTRAIN from using loud words.

You are pointing out the exact thing man. Let this habit of being safe come from within and rather enjoy being more safe and also let me say we do look smart when we are geared up, so don't worry about being fashionable.

By the way boots have been mentioned in signature saaaar.

I stand corrected bhai.. apologies to you. You're one person who can command and I can emulate as well...

Speaking of which... Which touring boots do you have bro? chaosaddict please throw your opinion my way about boots too bro... your 'knox' suggestion turned out to be very valued indeed... costly but nice. And i'm a dud with gear and brands... I just save for it, try it, like it, buy it if i have enough saved for it. (probably not enough saved yet )

As I know a decent pair cost 6k and upwords right? freakkin expensive these things are... but i love wearing the correct rider boots that will also aid in well placed grips and latitude for foot movements and safety. Important on sports and sports tourers where foot re-positioning is constant.

And also being a jugaad guy I always insist for Military boots. Though people will say its not meant for bike riding and bla bla, but its of very good quality, highly durable and mostly can be used anywhere while riding and touring. Look out at any proper military shops and you will get it in mere 1000 bucks max.

Ofcourse the well famed alpine star, MXR, FOX, etc are very costly as per my pocket, but they are the correct pair of boots and they are the aptly designed for the purpose of riding.
