  • Finally, added the tuned FFE to my setup!

Initial Impressions: Bike sounds like how a tuned racing exhaust sounds(with the DB killer), nice throaty sound...torque delivery seems more linear now, bike pulls strongly, and the big bore now revs better at high revs, it feels like the rev-limiter is too low at 10k for this setup.

Without the DB-killer: BOOMY! Never imagined bass, and bike seems to lean out at certain points(should be specific to my setup, not evident on few other similar setups). I need the ECU for this, reaches 100kph pretty quick and still keeps accelerating.

And, this exhaust heats up a LOT. Especially at the header, already burnt my hands slightly during installation!

    • Finally you got the exhaust.
Initially the bass of exhaust is so overwhelming that you tend to forget everything else. Are you using DB killer for city riding?

        Yeah!
I found my setup performs better with the DB Killer on, it needs fueling correction if DB Killer is removed..so using the DB Killer for now, and anyways, handling that bassy sound in the city aint easy I realized!

Ditto! I added the cam for good measure, as my bike is more for leisure than anything else, there's no fun below 4k rpm anyway, plus with two HID's I can't anyway.
Going to try to do the run in within 3 days of the install, if I have the time.

Oh you went for the cam as well? Do tell me how it feels once you've bolted everything on.
Joel, told me keep that for the next stage.

Regardless, I'm waiting for it. My run in is going to take a while. It's been pouring here real bad.

Yeah I decided on the cam as I'll be going for the ecu shortly as well. Raining heavily over here also. Probably install the kit in around 2 weeks as i'm fairly busy, i might leave the cam until the end of the run in period ( I have a reason for that)

                  Hehhe, yeah!
Well, the wait is well worth it! BTW, one suggestion during installation look at the ending of this post.

No fun below 4k RPM? Just wait till you get the big bore And yeah, you're doing the right thing by keeping the cams for the last, maybe you should do the same with FFE too, just try to keep the engine as cool as possible during run-in.

                  @Both of you:
You should've got the head-work too done, it makes good difference when combined with the big bore. Be careful with the run-in, and one suggestion during installation:

Be careful about the cylinder's top gasket(the one between the head and cylinder), if you've got the stock gasket, do file it to fit the bigger cylinder. There's a reason why I say this

                  • Digislayer,

I would be doing the installation from the SVC. How do I go about the filing? how did you get yours done?

The headwork will not be possible, atleast not anytime soon. Sadly. Though Joel said it will be of no problem in the long run and power output.

Just tell the SVC guys to bore out the gasket to match the new cylinder, they'll know how to do it

For my setup we got a suitable gasket I guess, or maybe used an already bored gasket, don't remember correctly..it's been 8 months since installation!

                      • Do Others who are running a similar setup, with a FFE also face the issue of the engine running lean after specific RPMs? Is there any way to sort out the issue with the stock ECU?

                          I hope they do.

Are you sure the existing gasket can be filed and it would fit in perfectly then?

                          Anyways, I;ll keep it posted.

                          • Hasta La Vista R15, Hola R17

The dawn of a new beginning......

This is a log of my rides transformation, from a stock Yamaha YZF R15 into a Yamaha YZF R17 Con un toque de Joel and the reasons behind me doing this, my total Xperience.

It all began in November of 2010, when my wife of 6.5 years at that time fell pregnant, this is to be our first/only and last child. Shortly after discovering our "good news" the boss headed off to Bombay to be with her mother, as I was too busy with my 1 year old business, which was beginning to pick up at that point, so off she went.

Now in the mean time we had one vehicle, which was a Tata Safari, it was just over two years old at the time the Mrs left for Bombay, the car was beginning to frustrate as interior fitting would fall off at random moments, claiming from warranty was becoming troublesome and without shares in Feviquick I felt it would only get worse. So my dilemma, my wife with a new born, me at my work and a problem or an appointment for the Mrs or child, she needs her own transport, I really can't see the point in having two cars, I had spent 38 years of my 41 years of existence living in England (NOT LONDON) and covered over 1 million kilometers of road in my time, moving to India had taken the fun out of driving, cows, dogs, buffalo's, random people and vehicles etc.

I felt I needed a buzz or a thrill, so I decided I needed a bike, on offer was the Pulsar 220, Honda hero ZMR/A, Apache and the R15, the Honda Hero was written off as I can't digest the name, the Apache whilst a sweet package, just wasn't there, the Pulsar with all it's grunt, didn't have the refinement, handling etc. I needed a good novice bike which could be modified to take me to the next level (intermediate) as the Ninja 250 R is almost double the price here, I wanted to avoid, especially with the 2nd hand vehicle pricing in India.

So after my research and uncovering Joel Joseph, I decided to sell the Safari and get a cheaper diesel car, with the money left over i could get a 2nd hand R15 and the full on kit for the bike, should be smooth sailing, right?

Ok so I put a sign up in the windows of the Safari, stick up a few ads in the local papers and hit up the internet classifieds, get an offer for a part exchange for a Swift Diesel and some cash in hand, decline the offer as I feel it's too low, get a few offers even lower, so pissed that i had bought a Tata, i go back to the first fellow, agree on a price and the process is under way, meanwhile I put up an add for a wanted R15, get a few responses at reasonable pricing, I decide to decline these offers, firstly the fellows were speaking in Hindi after reading an add in English (I don't understand too much Hindi) and most likely these bikes have been used as rentals for Desi tourists, a risk not worth taking, just as I'm thinking to screw the idea of mods and just buy a new bike, another fellow contacts me, this time he has 4-5 bikes, which are all garaged, the R15 is a late 2009 model with less than 1500km on the odo, the bike is pristine, only down side is he wants a premium for the bike, i make a snap decision and go for it, the fellow has passion and won't budge, he has a valid excuse that he's been living in Dubai for the low miles.

Ok so I get the transfers done of car and bike, all in my wifes name, she's still in Bombay. Problems solved, the wife has the car when she needs it and I will use the bike at other times, cool right? read on, i'm a little short on going full blown with the mods, but that's cool, some good business puts me back on track, I pat myself on the back and prepare to get the bike modded! exciting times right? read on....

Everything is looking sweet, pretty much as to plan, nothing can go wrong now right? Well now we're at the end of March 2011, bike in hand, cash in my pocket, wife is planning to come home next week, cool I miss her! she tells me she needs to have a scan booked for the child, no problem I ask, when's it due, last week she replies, I respond, you f-------g retard, please do this in bombay, you're not going anywhere until we are sure everything is cool, OK she replies and does the needful! She has the scan and the result is that she is on the verge of having a miscarriage, the doc will perform a simple procedure and she can go home in 3-4 days, no problem I thought, we can handle that, under the knife she goes, i get to try a long journey in the Swift, it turns out things were more complicated and the Mrs had to spend just under3 months lying in a hospital bed, with her feet elevated, baby came premature and the total hospital bill came to 4 lakhs and some! So at this point 2 months back, i thought this is an end to my idea of tuning my ride! At this point I am getting bored of the bike, straight line performance is just boring, cornering is great though at more to explore, thanks to twist of the wrist, twist of the wrist 2 and street smarts, a must read/watch for every serious biker.

NO TURNING BACK, I am the type of guy that when my mind is made up I will persevere, If i think you need a slap, i will slap you, if i think you need a kiss, then we're both screwed, simple!
So anyway I drive to Bombay on the 3rd July and head back on the 5th July, whilst in Bombay, my wife's doc tells me to be back within 2 weeks, no problem, I will return to Goa on the 5th complete some jobs, get paid and be back by the 18th July, get home on the 5th evening, organise my workers for the following morning, i will pick them up at 10 am, cool, good night.

After a great sleep, I awake, have my usual 3 cups of tea and smokes, the day looks positive, will get this work done and just maybe get some parts from Joel. The Mrs phones me 9.20 am, I know she's cool, after all she's been home for the past week and I have only left 24 hours ago. She tells me her waters are broken, i freak, why the doc said 2-3 weeks, right? no time to waste, it's off season here and flights are cheaper, so off I go, knowing I will need to be back home asap! after a very long day, i have a daughter born on 7/7/2011, damn cool, it rhymes and coincides with my birthday 6/6/70, so i'm happy and proud, bike mods are out the window, i don't care this is a very happy day for us.

Anyway after spending 3 weeks in Bombay, i need to head home, work is pending and customers are waiting, luckily i had given advance warning and kept them in touch throughout, good PR i think.

So anyway I land back in Goa, take a cab home, no food in the house and more important no milk, can't survive without my tea, so off i go to get some supplies, fire up the bike, no issues after a month in the rains, decide to take the scenic route to the supermarket, geared up off i go! I make around 300 metres then the mobile rings, I stop, answer the phone, it's a hotelier, a previous customer who wants a lot of work done, cool i think, i can provide fore the future of my daughter and even look at modding the bike! After a couple of weeks of discussions the order shrunk, my fault for being honest, back to square one right? No.....Read on....

In the mean time i had advertised some very sweet car audio for sale, which i had had with me in the UK, it was too much for the Swift, this was high end gear and well worth the price tag, I had a few offers for the gear and had sold off a couple of subwoofers, next in line was a DLS A6 mono amp, finally got a good offer, SOLD, told the buyer to deposit the amount in Joels account. I had to add a little extra which I did immediately, I had paid for a Frew flow exhaust, Big Bore Kit and an air filter, at this point was undecided about sending the cylinder head to Joel for reworking or going for a camshaft, Joel advised the camshaft, so deposited the balance to Joel.

This was around a month back, today i received the free flow exhaust, gave Joel a buzz and was told the rest should be with me within a day or two. Ok I said I will wait patiently, nonsense, that shiny exhaust was starring at me, taunting me and teasing me, I call my watchman, chuck on the back of the bike with the FFE, we go to the local mech, approx 200 metres away and get the exhaust put on.

We fix it up within 10 mins, crank her up and at first she sounds like Bullet, guess it's that single cylinder thing, take a road test and sweeeet! more than the pussy it was, now she purrs like a tiger, good improvement in torque at the lower end of the power band, it get's better as you near peak output a little bassy and tinny on acceleration, decalerate and the sound is music, the occasional back fire is music to my ears, free revving is what it's all about now.

More to follow, will try to take a video of my run in.
