  • Guys I want your honest review: (SZR)
1.How is the top end of this bike? Who achieved which top speeds?
2.How is the pull from top gear?
3.How is ignition efficiency? I mean starting issues of-course. Do you have any problem not having kick?
4.How is seating position? Handle bar is lower like FZ?
5.How is handling? Is front is heavy or light? Heavy front helps to keep bike stable much at lower speed.
6.What is exact speed at 5th gear @4000RPM?
    7.How is the silencer grunt?
8.How is headlight spread? Well that's not my concern much at all.
    9.How is the chain maintenance?
    10.How is the braking efficiency?
11.What is the average mileage? This is less issue for me.
    12.Clutch is tight or soft/smooth?
    13.Tyre grip?
14.Did you guys change oil filter at 2nd service? or Air Filter cleaning? I believe it is paper type isn't it?

Please anyone answer these question of you have them, yes only you know to these answers well. Thanks.

At last I want your honest opinion on Yamaha SZR or TVS Apache RTR 160 Hyperedge?

1.How is the top end of this bike? Who achieved which top speeds?

Goes upto 110Kmph with 110Kg single rider.

2.How is the pull from top gear?

You can stop the bike in 5th gear and then again start and go without downshifting, and there's ALMOST no lugging.

3.How is ignition efficiency? I mean starting issues of-course. Do you have any problem not having kick?

Both FZ and SZ bike's have starting issue's after reaching the 4 digit mark on the odo, some even before. But the battery's the one to blame, so if we replace it with a better one, then the issue will be solved. But no worried overall, cause my friends usually push start the bike, and that too with the least effort.

4.How is seating position? Handle bar is lower like FZ?

Depends on the rider, for me it was the same, since both FZ and SZ have lower handle bar positioning regarding ZMA.

5.How is handling? Is front is heavy or light? Heavy front helps to keep bike stable much at lower speed.

Its an overall light bike, easily flickable. BUT BRAKING SUCKS LIKE ANYTHING, SO SWAP THE TYRES AS SOON AS YOU TAKE DELIVERY.

      7.How is the silencer grunt?

FZ'ish except for the bass effect after 6k RPM.

8.How is headlight spread? Well that's not my concern much at all.

Just like FZ, the high beam indicator light is way brighter than the highbeam itself, thus making us loose focus while riding at night.

      10.How is the braking efficiency?

Small story, me and Aneesh's bro, riding at 60~80Kmph had to hard brake, and the brakes responded well, meaning both wheels locked, but the bike still moved for like 200Mts or so before we hit the bike in front of us and high sided.

11.What is the average mileage? This is less issue for me.

      During RUN-IN - 50~55Kmph.
      After RUN-IN - Minimum 60Kmph.
Then after completing for about 5k Kms, the bike shows it true nature, wont go above 40~45Kmpl. Varies from rider to rider.

      12.Clutch is tight or soft/smooth?

Springy and quick. In short the best I've used.

      13.Tyre grip?

      Worst.

At last I want your honest opinion on Yamaha SZR or TVS Apache RTR 160 Hyperedge?

Even though the SZR had many issue's when you read the above, you can blindly go for it, cause I guarantee that it has more fun factor and reliability regarding the HyperEdge, but its better you consult a rider who's extensively ridden it, cause unlike the FZ/SZ etc the HyperEdge(Badged 160) has only been with me for a few hours.
      Replies in BOLD.

The above conclusions are just and unbiased since I dont own any of the above, the FZ/SZ series bike's have been with me for days and weeks, since the SVC here sucks and my friends leave their bikes with me, since am considerably closer to the SVC.

Top Speed is sufficient for me.
As for Vibration I know no bike in yamaha has vibration. Not at least those I have ridden.
Well, I intend to change the tyres just after buying with Pulsar 17" ones. I am quite sure they will provide sufficient grip.

If what you intend to do is want a bike to take it out on weekend, or have that racing zeal then hyperedge is what i would suggest. Since it has better comparable throttle from like 30 to 70kmph, faster top speed, good braking stability and sound at higher RPM.

But what I can also tell you is that SZR may not beat the Apache in above but in overall ride comfort its better, specially no vibrations(you cant imagine unless u experience it), superb good low torque so you can just pull accelerator and go in any gear and smooth gear shifts like unicorn its great. (read article on pg. 53 for the feel comparision).
The pulsar 150 is now being equipped by same TVS tyres of same tread pattern. Dont buy it!
I strongly suggest you to go for the Yamaha R15v1 tyre sets. I am also planning on the same before rainy season. They give the best grip on tarmac, you can read even in tyres section how even ppl with RTR too choose the MRF Zapper S. Its a soft compound rubber gives you good grip but wears out fast, If you plan on more offroad kind then Ceat Vertigo Sport is good.

          • Well CEAT vertigo looks bad. and here P150 comes with 2.75 and 100/90 nylo gripper. Both are decent tyres, I suppose. and Yes, I know the difference between them. But still RTR has many goodies at a small increasing price so still can't decide.

Tyres are not choosen for looks. Its for their grip and handling. This is the vertigo I am talking of..

Good to know that it comes with same tyre spec. But are you sure its 100/90-17 . Also make sure by asking around in tyre section, I am not too sure, but when I asked same ppl suggested I choose the R15 tyres any day!

What is your requirement for the tires? Increased grip/off roading or anything else?

1.How is the top end of this bike? Who achieved which top speeds?
Ans: Till 80 kmph its a rocket, but after 80 kmph it crawls to triple digit, top speed is 110 Kmph, still had some juice left in it, but didnt push it forward.

2.How is the pull from top gear?
Ans: Never tried it from stand-still but yes the pick up is good be it any gear at appropriate RPMs.

3.How is ignition efficiency? I mean starting issues of-course. Do you have any problem not having kick?
Ans: I now stay at Pune, and this is the first winter that bike is facing temperature here is pretty low 10-15 degrees, I go for early morning rides over the weekend, never faced a single problem in the 10 months of ownership.

4.How is seating position? Handle bar is lower like FZ?
Ans: Sitting posture is Relaxed, handle bar is not lower as FZ.

5.How is handling? Is front is heavy or light? Heavy front helps to keep bike stable much at lower speed.
Ans:Its damn flickable bike in traffic. Stable at lower speed.

6.What is exact speed at 5th gear @4000RPM?
                  Ans: Around 50 kmph

                  7.How is the silencer grunt?
Ans: This is the best part of this bike, I explain it like a 'Manly Silent' grunt. It gets even better at higher RPM.

8.How is headlight spread? Well that's not my concern much at all.
Ans: Only once had a chance to ride in the night, it is decent but not the best.

                  9.How is the chain maintenance?
Ans: Lub it, clean it, cover it and forget it.

                  10.How is the braking efficiency?
Ans: It comes with disc brake, so the braking is good not the best IMO, combination of front and read brake is even better.

11.What is the average mileage? This is less issue for me.
Ans: Under all circumstances I get 45 kmpl.

                  12.Clutch is tight or soft/smooth?
Ans: Depending how you set it.

                  13.Tyre grip?
Ans: Debatable, comes with not so good TVS tires, useless for off roads, but good for the highways. I did quite a lot of small rides during the rainy season, I had to be extra cautious. I guess this is the only dept where Yamaha did cost cutting.

14.Did you guys change oil filter at 2nd service? or Air Filter cleaning? I believe it is paper type isn't it?
Ans: Oil filter change at every Service. Air filter cleaning is part of servicing.

P150 comes with Eurogrip tyres and yes the thread pattern for SZ-R and P150 are the same, cant comment on the grip of both the tyres as I never rode P150. P180, P220 comes with MRF Nylogrip Zapper.

Eurogrip is a subsidiary of TVS tyres, same compound in both the tyres, hard nylon, but the pulsar has a little weight at back atleast, not our bikes. Anyways I plan on R15v1 MRF tyres.

                      • Do keep updating about any changes made to the bike. BTW I have CEAT tyres on my old disco and i found them quite comfortable.

Will it be wise to change the rear tyre for 3.00-17 instead of current one 100/90-17 for improvement in mileage. Anyways i m not changing the tires now but just out of curiosity asking.

As a matter of fact even the nylogrips coming on pulsar are more hard rubber than the regular ones they sell, the OEM tyres usually last long, they give grip initially but this particular tire I see in old pulsars, they bald at center at about 10k km and the entire tire start to skid on straight surfaces, the side groves still remain.. Its same in case of unicorn tire too. remember to check tread pattern and soft/hard compound.
