Pull out the small thingi's sticking out, if it comes with ease then its soft, if theres little resistance then its medium compound, if it doesnt at all come out its hard.

Yes, its the same, costs about 55rs+tax in SVC.
There are no short-cuts to any place worth going. So ride safe when you are treading uncharted roads.

That would be an interesting upgrade, surely I didnt have anything of that sort. Also would the battery support the HID or the upgrade is needed?

                (1) check clutch setting
                (2) check if rpm at idle is low
                (3) if you feel pick up is less get the tappet adjusted they may be tight

                    • Problems... wat else!

I am here after a long time coz I am in dire need of your help guys. Mine has done a 7000kms and is showing all signs of bad performance. Firstly, the chain sprocket is gone bad (you know the noise that comes while riding and the irritating feeling), I am shocked because my 2006 model Passion + showed the same signs only after 30000 kms. To add to my troubles, I noticed a terrifying thing last week. I went on a trip uphill (60km) along with friends (one pulsar old and 1 brand new Unicorn), my friends noticed a burnt smell from SZ-Rs engine and reported to me. I am totally upset after that, the smell is very much like that of a burnt charcoal (or an Iron box being plugged on for 20 mins), it was disgusting and I haven’t smelt something like that in all my years of riding bikes. The 3rd service was done at 5900 kms. Believe it or not, my mileage is exactly 40 kmh no matter how I drive and what quality of petrol I use. The showroom is closed for 5 days here in view of pongal. I request senior members to give me a proper guidance in this regard. I am not sure if they will change the chain set as per warranty and I don’t have any idea about the engine smell and mileage. ( I also bought extended warranty on purchase date) .

Okay. Let me clear your doubts here one by one.
                          1. Yes, its normal to have the burnt smell, even my engine does that and specially in rainy season. Check if anything like dirt is sticking to engine or silencer near the engine, try to clean it. If its a very strong smell, you must have the bike checked, it may be low engine oil level or a sign that your engine is running lean. Does your bike misfire? (i.e more air, less fuel which overheats bike quickly).
                          2. The chains should have at least last double that, I guess the fault may be due to either wrong sprocket alignment but you would know that while engaging gears which wont shift or you can feel the chains clunk i.e there was that constant chain hitting the cover sound, also its possible if you have not been cleaning and lubricating your chain every 500km.
no warranty for chains, you will need to spend from pocket, hence forth get chain oiled at atleast 500-700km interval and better still cleaning, oiling and check the chain slack every 1000km which will give a long lasting life.
                          3. 40kmpl sounds good considering what fuel you put, air pressure in tyres, your riding style, using higher gears, less frequent use of too much brakes or low gears like riding in first gear, etc. I get 46kmpl city+highway. I ride around 50-70kmph speeds.
                          4. Yes, get it show at a different Yamaha SVC if you feel unsatisfied with yours just for a second opinion of how long chain will last, sometimes the SVC ask you to change it even if your chain will last another good 3-4k km a little sign of wear for your safety and prevent hassle when your bike breaks down on way. Since the chain is not covered under warranty and its risky if you get the chain cut when travelling I suggest you show it to some other good mechanic and take his opinion whether to just change the chain or change both chain and sprockets... You can change the worn out links, but today or tomorrow again the new links will wear out quickly due to worn out sprockets.

You cannot fit a meteor to SZR.
The tyre spec you need to look out for is: 100/90 - 17
                            And the best ones are:
                            1. Ceat Vertigo Sport (more for off road)
                            2. MRF Zapper S (this one is more suited for highway tarmac, superb grips in corners but very bad on mud roads it slips)
                            3. MRF Zapper C (normal roads)

Oh No! i did not know that chain is not covered under warranty. can i not make it an issue with yamaha? i never rode on terrains and have done servicing at proper intervals and i have never rash drove the bike, not even once.
the smell i mentioned is really different from the ordinary burnt smell and like you said i hear the misfiring sound very frequently. i suspect the SVC has done some mistake while changing oil the last time they serviced the bike. my bad, i would probably spend 2-3 thousand rupees i guess. 2012 sucks!
