  • Hey guys,
As suggested earlier i checked economy of my SZ, its giving me 51 in city conditions and there is no smoke from exhaust but sadly the issue persists but its reduced significantly. I have ridden this bike now for 5K Kms and its getting better. Now i have a query regarding a tour. I wish to take this trip to my home town from Pune which will be around 700 KM. I haven't had this long trip on SZ so a little scrptical. Someone please help me out as to what all things i need to make sure of before embarking on this trip. Looking forward to all your replies.

    • After too many discussions, thought process and lot of daring, I did it. Replaces stock switchgear with that of FZ.
Now I have my dream come true. Pass switch. Done at a local workshop, so bye-bye warranty (but soon its going to be 2nd birthday of my bike).
Have connected both side sets, but yet to wire up engine kill. Now that FZ switch provides pilot lamp option in the switch, I have laid wires for that.
The next hurdle is to drill a hole in the reflector to fix the holder for light.

FZ's switch costed me 648 INR. Labour charge was around 150 INR.

Great work there  650 bucks for both switches? Anyway thats worth it, the switchgear is of very good quality and r15 too uses the same.

Yes, both bikes use same engine. I guess sz has a detuned carb. Anybody got the jet sizes of the sz stock carb?

        • Hello Everyone My first Post on xbhp

Going through forum from last 3-4 days .Read many trip logs, ownership Exps , Tourers etc Very good forum . I always searched for bike reviews on youtube and other car/bike magzines but wasnt satisfied cause they were just first impressions .Here on xbhp on ownership threads u can get real review of bikes so felt really good after coming to this forum.

So why i posted first here ? U can have clue by my username ya i own SZ-R . It is my first bike . Just want to share my exp with fellow xbhpins

          Pre-Buying
Before this bike i have never ridden any bike (except unicorn 4-5 kms while learning) so i am pretty much newbie when it comes to bikes. When i decided to buy a new bike i started visiting various websites and youtube for reviews. At first as i was unaware of other aspects of buying bike i just wanted a big bike with big tyres so natural choice was FZ but my budget (actually my parent's )was around 60-65 k . So just from looks point of view i shortlisted

          1.Stunner
          2.Pulsar 135

Read some good reviews about P135 and some bad reviews about stunner that its just looks big and so on

          Decision day

Now i had decided to buy bike one of above or to request my parents to increase budget (which was very difficult) In Pune on satara road there are show rooms of yamaha bajaj honda . As FZ was out of budget my budget there was no point in visting yamaha showroom. But my friend insisted on visiting every showroom on road (he told me if u dont want to look dont look but i want to see every showroom nearby) So first went to yamaha and there were FZs Fazers & R15s and in corner there were szs Didn't had a proper look at SZ first time though my friend asked dealer abt it then after getting quote we went to bajaj But p135 looks small for my height and weight .I was disappointed cause it was my best choice .then went to Honda showroom but they didnt had any Stunner for show so another disappointment (and because of some negative reivews also) Then my friend said lets see SZ-r again and he said it looked decent (i didnt hav proper look first time) So we went again to yamaha . The main reason that SZ-r didnt caught my eye was it was parked in opposit direction so only rear was visible . Then asked them to make some space to see front and whole bike from side so here came a surprise, SZ looked good (i was surprised because it looked good in presence on beautiful FZ and r15 too) So asked about features and all and got a quote and came home. For 2 days read many reviews about it (mostly about SZ-x rather SZ-r) so i decided to buy this bike and color finalized was Quality Red(Red with white wings)

          Buying Day

Paid money and completed other formalities by 11 Am and showroom guy told me get bike delivery on same day in evening (Huh that was fast no booking etc etc pay money and take home ) It was raining on that day and i also didn't have much exp of riding so called up cousin to take bike home (you would say how can u give first ride to som1 else but considering the rainy day and slope of the road for 1-2 kms and traffic and i didnt want to get in any kind of accident) So just rode for 50-100m then gave bike to cousing and came home

          Practice and Practice

On next morning woke up early to ride bike and to have some practice . When i first released the clutch i can feel more torque than unicorn (on which i learnt initially) Bike felt big to me initially so rode carefully and as u many know in many parts of Pune there are lots of Ups and Downs so was test for me Somehow reached home after 7-8 km (max gear 3rd )

then practiced daily getting confident with low gears and breaking . Then moved to 4th and 5th and got used to disc brakes within 2 weeks . Using Discs intially was scary bike used to looise balance if braked on low speeds. Now after month i was getting confidence and also first 1000km i have to ride slow and within 4k Rpm . SO withing those 1000kms learned well and sometimes i was tempted to go fast by seeing the pickup it had but controlled my self .

Then after daily commuting to clg (30kms total) on this bike was fun . Go get ahead of every1 from red light i was experiencing first time felt good. Initially had a problems in very slow traffic

After getting enough confidence abt brakes decided to go on Mumbai pune Bypass (similar to highway)

Went from Katraj to chinchwad 35 kms in 35-40 mins. Reached speed upto 75Kmph (i guess RPM meter was on 5.5 k not sure ) But didnt had a courage to go beyond that (still i never went beyong 80 KMPH)

So overall experience completed 3600 km

          Nice handling and pickup

          Good front brakes

          smooth ride (like unicorn)

          Problems Faced

Tyre doesn't give confidence too push hard (or may be just my perception)

Now thr seems to be some prb with gears not shifting fluidly and clutch is loose (have to get to SVC ASAP)

False neutral (maybe a personal riding prb)

Poor horn and instrument panel lights

          Suggestion are welcome

          • Hi Kapil,

            Welcome to xbhp!

Keep sharing your ownership experience here with all of us.

After my 9th service looks like SVC screwed the rear brake, the bite has reduced, still effective but lost its initial bite. Changed the brake pads, front looks pretty good but not the best.

I had been on mountainous roads many times and everytime I go there with my SZ-R it doesnt disappoint, handles pretty well on the corners but tyres doesnt encourage to do any fancy stuff. Good front brake and sticky tyres would change complete dynamics of this bike.

Still running on Elf Moto 10W50 Fully synthetic, smooth engine and smooth gear shift even after 3.5 K kms of oil change.

            Cheers!

            • So, yesterday changed single horn to dual one (manufactured by ROOTs) total cost including labour plus relay are Rs. 530/- picture attached .

Also i want to share one problem faced ... yesterday suddenly Clutch cable braked right from the clutch lever......though I changed the same but that road side mechanic suggest me to replaced the same wire from the service center along with whole outer.

I am still surprised how this problem raised, when my bike runs only on 2800kms.????

What you ppls suggest me shall I changed the whole clutch wire along with its outer in Service center or should i wait for another breakdown

I dont think outer would need a change, but since your bike is just 2800 kms old and I guess it is still under warranty, so why dont you go ahead and claim it under warranty? But I would suggest get the clutch cable changed ASAP to avoid any unavoidable circumstances.

BTW how is your bike holding up? Mileage update? Any small / long ride?

                Cheers!

Thanks for suggestion , i will checkit out the same on this sunday...(but normal wear n tear will include in warranty.. did anyone claimed for the same)

About mileage its around 40-43 kmpl in Delhi traffic (did i need to check something or this bike is just like this as this is only third service old).

rest i am very much happy with bike performance.... but some time i feel.. low power after my speedometer crossed 60 mark..... ??? may be my doubt...

My ride till now only restricted to "home to office" or viceversa.. which 60km (up 'n' down)...

Yep... another change is on the card i.e. TYRE .. tubeless.... Rear one..... but can someone highlight me... tubless tyre for front ... as there are 90x90 available... in the market ..?????

Clutch cable getting snapped so early is definitely not a wear and tear. Please check with service center what they have to say about it.

Mileage dont worry about this part, it will be between 40-50 kmpl all the time. Latest that I got from my small ride with low gear, moderate RPM rides is 45 kmpl. It will improve definitely.

And yes this bike is fun to ride bike, gets better and better as time passes. , as far lack of power, yes it is pretty visible after you cross 70-80 kmph but before that I never had a problem. Around 6.5K RPM and 80 KMPH is ideal for me on highway. Better tyre would definitely make it a good handler too.

For tyres just happened to check P135 rear MRF tyre is exact same size as SZ-R's tyre and its a tubed type tyre. For front you can look at the tyres of R15 v1, R15 v1 front is 90/90 I guess, not sure though.

                    Cheers!

                      • So yesterday change my bike clutch wire from service center, they replaced fully outer along with clutch cable...

Total cost 130 rs (89 rs clutch wire + 30 rs labour charges)

Wires not covered under warranties as told by service manager, he insist the same is also mentioned in manual (that i will check)

                        The bills are attached

                          • hi guys,

I'm planning to Travel to Agra on 10.02.13 or 17.02.13 with wife for one day.

We are planning to go on bike (Yahama SZ-R), my Bike completes only 3000 kms on ODO. Sumup weight of both is around 180kgs.

                            1. Will it be safe to ride a Bike to Agra considering that fact that my wife will be accompanying me (first Time).

                            2. Will there be enough mechanics on the Delhi Agra road incase there is a break down due to Puncture or something. Do i need to carry any bike spares? I would prefer to travel in light so i thought not to carry not spares with me.

                            3. Planning to leave from home around 5am.

                            4. How about using Taj EXPRESS – will it open for two wheeler.. how is it safe two wheeler ???

                            5. Which route to follow from Vikaspuri, New Delhi to Tajmahal ( a snapshot of google maps will really helpful)

                            6. Any medicine needs to carry… ?? if yes then what are those???

                            7. How to avoid that num bumbs… will a cotton pillow work on seat ???

                            8. Also please suggest some stoppage.. for rest in between.

                            9. Any Modification in Bike needs to be done like tubeless tyre..

                            Thanks

Ans: Only Delhi people will be able to answer this one. And if you comfortable with pillion in City traffic then it shouldnt be a problem, but be aware that the whole dynamics of riding changes when you have a pillion aboard and that too wife. Be sure of the safety gears, Remember ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time)

Ans: I did 2 long rides about 380 kms in a day on my SZ-R and did not face any problem in any of the ride. I was riding solo for first ride and then second with YRC Group of Pune.

                              3. Planning to leave from home around 5am.
Ans: Thats a very good timing, but since this winter, you wont have a daylight so early in the morning also cold factor should also be considered here.

                              4. How about using Taj EXPRESS – will it open for two wheeler.. how is it safe two wheeler ???
                              Ans: Anyone from Delhi?

                              5. Which route to follow from Vikaspuri, New Delhi to Tajmahal ( a snapshot of google maps will really helpful)
Ans: May be you can check about the route in the Delhi G2G thread. They will be having a better idea about it.

                              6. Any medicine needs to carry… ?? if yes then what are those???
Ans: Carry a bottle of water, first aid kit. Carry all the papers of your bike, RC Book, PUC, Licence etc. Other members pls help him with this more.

                              7. How to avoid that num bumbs… will a cotton pillow work on seat ???
Ans: LOL! No need for that, you can take breaks whenever you want. Besides the SZ-R's rider and pillion seat is comfortable.

                              8. Also please suggest some stoppage.. for rest in between.
Ans: Again you have to find out with fellow riders in Delhi.

                              9. Any Modification in Bike needs to be done like tubeless tyre..
Ans: Brother stop worrying, go for the ride, ride it safe. Make sure you have a recommended pressure in the tyres.

                              Thanks

SZ-R is much more capable bike than most people think. It carries same heart as FZ but still it is underestimated. This bike certainly has a character and deserves some praise but somehow it doesnt get it.

                              Cheers!
