  • Finally Bought my First Bike Yamaha SZ-R (Quality White) yesterday from Yamaha Factory Shop Pune... Onroad price along with the extended warranty costed me 67,252... Not sure thats the right one or a higher price they coated... Thanks to XBHP for motivating me to buy this bike with all its members reviews.. I guess i would not have gone with the bike if i had not looked in to the site.. believe me I have gone through each and every post of the 84 pages ownership experience... Which helped me decide of this one.. And special thanks to lalit for his extensive experience sharing about the bike...

I wanted my first bike to be a special one but budget was always a concern and most importantly the mileage.. So the first obvious choice with some descent power was Discover 125cc.. I even liked the looks to some extent.. When I went to the Bajaj showroom to enquire the onroad price I first time saw the 125ST and I was pretty much impressed with its looks and features and the price was 5k more than the regular 125cc.. So the Budget shot up from 62k to 67k.. It was then I saw this ownership thread and tried test riding the beast SZR.. I was completely bowled out with its looks and the riding experience made me forget Discover completely.. THough mileage was a concern the priority suddenly shifted to looks and the budget shot up to 71k (bangalore onroad price) ...

Had booked the bike on Saturday and they promised me next day bike delivery once I pay the amount in full.. But the showroom was too far from Hinjewadi, where I live and commuting with Bus was a pain... So I asked them for same day delivery and to my surprise they were okay with that and delivered the bike in just 3hrs after I made the payment in full...

Coming back to the Bike it's just awesome.. The ride makes you feel special.. The riding comfort, the seating position, the handling, gear shifts everything makes u love the bike even more... Just after seconds of riding, the mileage concern faded away that's how much it impressed me... Though the bike is on a heavier side in stand still, its feather light when u r riding it. you can cut through the traffic with ease not worrying abt the weight... The bike can take off easily in 3rd gear in traffic even with a pilion rider... I would say this is the most economical VFM great looking 150cc Bike... Its doing pretty well in Pune and I could see loads of booking coming in.. cant say the same in bangalore though... If someone is to be blamed then its Yamaha itself, I could not see even a single poster of SZR or a brochure in the factory shop to promote the bike.. All they are worried is the FZ's and the Fazers...

Rode around 30kms yesterday and loved every bit of it.. Tried to maintain the speed b/w 45-50kmph and the Rpm less the 4.5k as suggested here... Minus some misfires when starting the bike everything else was perfect..

When I just thought I had a bike delivered in perfect condition I realised that the low beam of the bike doesnt work... Only the high beam works and unfortunately we can use it to search Stars on the sky rather than humps or pot holes on road.. Its more of the circus lights which they used in olden days to make their presence aware by projecting it to sky... Need to take it to the dealer on saturday to get it fixed....

Overall I'm very happy with my selection.. It didn let me down.. I just hope it continues the same way in future too...

I had the same issue with my brother's SZR...we had thought of going with a Projector setup, but were put off with the low quality stuff available at my hometown. Then we temporarily tried a 'local' 55w bulb, but the gains were negligible and we were unsure of the heat levels. We will be trying with an Osram NB the next time I visit him (dealers in my hometown don't stock high-end bulbs - they only stock the 50-rupee local lamps). If that doesn't work, I would be shipping him a 55w projector setup from B'lore.

            Hi Agni,

Great to see you getting your first bike as SZ-R, certainly VFM bike, highly under-rated, quality at par with Unicorn. Blame it to anyone but it doesnt matter.

My advice, just follow the manual the way it says, it is my first bike so I had no idea about how to go with it, manual came to the rescue. Follow the run-in period religiously, you will see how fruitful it is in the later part of riding. On highway at high speeds (80-90 kmph) stable, but cross-winds irritates a lot since it has lighter front.

The downer of this bike is the tyres. And the top end, but this bike is never designed for top end. Also i have even heard that FZ/Fazer struggles after 80 kmph (Never rode it, just heard so no offense please).

Enjoy the ride and keep sharing your riding experience here.

Ohh and BTW just dont worry about initial niggles, like you have with headlight, service center would take care of it. For the matter of fact I had handle lock not working, speed stopped working on the first day of my delivery. It was all been sorted out well.

            Cheers!

            - Lalit

            • hello friends...I have just completed 900kms on my sz-r....I'll be going for the first service soon. I am facing a weird problem on wet roads in rainy season, it spills considerable amount of muddy water on shoes and lower part of jeans/trouser. I have never faced such issue on cbz, splendour, passion or pulsar in same conditions. Can anyone suggest any solution for this issue...???

Since SZ-R is my first bike, I can not comment on it, anyone can help him with his query?

Silly question, but do you have a mudflap installed on your front fenders? Helps a lot. Agreed that it looks ugly as sin, but keeps the water out. I have one installed on the CBR to keep the water and muck out from the radiator.

Thanks a lot for informing me that it was a silly question but let me inform you that there are rare bikes in india which have this kind of problem....

You misunderstood me buddy. What I meant was...my question may seem like a silly question to many people here, but thats a basic think which many of us overlook Do you have a mudflap?

I am extremely sorry as I misunderstood you.....no I dont have, I'll try to find a good mudflap soon because it rains quite a lot in delhi sometimes. one thing more which I have found is that front mudguard of sz-r is very sharp and narrow at bottom in comparison to other bikes and i guess that is why it gives this problem but this was never a problem with me on other bikes like passion, splendor, discover, pulsar, cbz etc. pulsar series comes with company fitted mudflap whereas hero bikes have a better designed mudguard which actually guards both mud and water.....

The funny thing is - mudflaps are considered so useless now-a-days, some people just give them away. I was looking for a mudflap for the CBR and approached a local spares shop - he managed to find one after a lot of digging around, and finally handed me a decent piece designed for TVS mopeds, without asking for any money. I didn't want to make any holes on my fender, so tried to fit the flap with some M-seal on the underside - unfortunately, it fell off in a matter of hours. Went to him again, and got one more flap for free - and this time, i got it fitted with screw/nuts after drilling 2 holes on my fender.

I have tried to follow the manual as much as possible... Average speed has been 40-50 and occasional 55-60 while overtaking... have tried to maintain the RPM under 4.5k almost all the times...

I have a couple of questions.

                            1. Is it required to turn off the fuel knob during overnight parkingg??

                            2. Which is the best petrol bunk?? have been going to HP now as i remember reading somewhere that HP was better than others...

                              1. It's advisable, though most of us do not follow it. A detailed discussion here (motorcycle - Why should the fuel petcock valve be turned to)
                              2. Do you have Shell outlets in your city? If not, then you can visit any bunk but do make it a point to visit COCO (company-owned, company-operated) bunks only.
