  • Re: Yamaha SZ-X / SZ-R

12th Service done. Oil changed, Yamalube SS15W50, routine checkups and nothing much to talk about. SVC fiddled with AFR screw even after me telling them not to do so. Cant help. Bunch of jack-arses. Disc are sharper than ever, master cylinder spring was changed in Apr 2013. Also last time I changed the oil seal of right fork and fork oil replaced. Suspension works perfect. Bike works perfect. Pickup same or even better.

BTW I had done numerous longish rides on SZ-R, which includes mountainous roads Lavasa, Amby, Khandala Ghat no problem at all. Maximum I rode in a day was about more than 350 kms. Mileage hovering between 43 to 47 kmpl.

On the other note, met a guy on highway riding SZ-R first gen just like me. He did about 45K kms on his bike. Asked him what have he done to maintain it. His answer was, he just did regular servicing and didnt change much of parts except the ones which wear and tear. No trouble with engine, no trouble with mileage. He changed the tyres to Ceat at rear and MRF at front, as his TVS tyres were worn out. Mileage he reported surprisingly more than 45 kmpl. So this is much capable machine but underestimated due to its less power. How much less? 1.2 BHP less than Unicorn. Is that the real deal breaker?

BTW what is the top end of Honda Unicorn, HH Hunk, CBZ, Achiever, Impulse, Pulser 150, Trigger. Didnt include GS150R as it is in as it is pretty different than most of 150 CC bike and I have huge respect for GS150R.

Let me introduce myself, I own a Yamaha SZR and quite satisfied with it. For AFR screw, I recommend you to place marking on AFR screw with enamel paint like it comes in some motorcycles from factory and count no. of AFR screw turns. Then let mechanics have play with AFR,you can go back to YOUR settings easily.

Have you got Bybre disc brakes ?? I have Bybre, they feel quite spongy or it could be just in my bike.

Your suggestion is granted. I filled the said form , lets see their responce.
        Thank you once again.
I was wondering for some LED in my headlight and Fluorescent Green for the Ears at Tanks. Any good Paint Brand ? Since I had seen the Special edition in Green and Black I planed to Paint the EARs.....

I am yet to recieve their reply. But I am not going to leave them.by the way instead of painting the ear just get them replaced. LED in headlight is next course of action as you can see space is there below the head light bulb.for that matter we need maximum number of knocking at yamaha's door

            Hi,

Sorry for the late reply. Yes even I do have Bybre brakes. Did a lot of circus with the SVC and Yamaha India for the brakes. At 10K kms mark changed brake pad and did front brake oevrhaul, I saw pretty good improvement and later after few months I showed it to my trusted mechanic. He removed the brake lever and showed me the rusted spring, he greesed it and brakes were even better. In the month of April this year, I changed the spring and replaced the brake oil. The brakes are like they were never before, now they are pretty sharp and can be trusted upon more.

How many kms you have done so far? Check out the spring in the lever, see if it is rusted or not. Also how is the play of the brake lever?

The new SZ-RR comes with Nisin front brake which is I think similar to rear brake of R15. Anyone tried new SZ-RR? How is the braking in it? The reason I am asking specifically brakes is, brakes are the only different thing in the SZ-RR from its old variant. :-)

You can look for Yamaha logo with light too, I have seen one FZ in night with its Yamaha logo glowing below tank, looked quite racy.

Nothing to be sorry about . I asked SVC guys to check brake pad whether they need to be replaced or not. They replied it is fine. One thing that I missed is brake oil, will check manual to see its recommended replacement period. My bike has done close to 15K, no major expense incurred till now except regular oil change, oil filter etc.

Brake lever play is in good condition as I religiously oil all joints/Chain as mentioned in manual with EP 90 Gear oil. This is done atleast once in month. Where this spring is located in brake lever ? Do we need to get brake lever opened to check it ?

New SZ -RR has different meter console design too.

Finally I got Call from my YSC people .They assured to resolve any issue as complained. I hope they will make necessary changes and will install Engine kill switch and Pass switch. I will also insist them for the Bike Tire and Head light as an burning Issue.

Hi Any update on the above things? Were you able to fit the engine kill switch and pass switch?

What mileage you all getting out of SZ-R?

Honda unicorns are giving up their life early.
This might be the downside of their extreme fuel efficiency.I think sz can clock way more.

Is the chain slack ok? Why is there so vibration in chain?

I met a guy on highway tapri (tea shop) with black SZ-R first gen. Saw his bike with Ceat rear Tyre, saw his odo it was about 45K kms. I asked him what maintenance and what expenses incurred while maintaining the bike. He said he just had to change wear and tear parts like spark plug, air filter, liner, brake pads and just regular services, he even claimed his SZ-R gives him above 45 kmpl of mileage in any condition.

I am nobody to comment, on engine reliability of Yamaha. But so far what I have heard and what I have seen, people are running bike with regular service just fine.

                          Cheers!

Second service done on 2700 km. Engine oil and filter change. chain was loose and making sound so mechanic fixed that.
till date average is around 44/45 km on reserve to reserve basis. After service pick-up power seems to be reduced.
There was a Keer-Keer sound whenever i touched above 54 km/h. I mention that to mechanic and he told me that is resolved.
yesterday i crossed 54 km/h and sound was still there. tomorrow will visit to service centre to fix that. Any idea why is this happening?
I checked its not particular RPM but speedometer reading above 54.

Why is the rubber (in red) touching the chain ?
The chain slack is not OK , It is too much.vibration is due to tight spot in the chain to remove the tight first clean and oil the chain then adjust the chain slackness according to the limit given in the manual at the tightest point.I repeat at the tightest point.BY doing so your chain will be loose at other points,do not worry, ride the bike as usual .After say 100 km repeat the process, you can leave the cleaning part if it is not required. It is time taking process and contrary to popular belief please do not tight the chain at the most loose point.
So far rubber is concerned ,I am unable to recall its name(I am getting older). It is there for preventing the chain from friction/rubbing.You can find it in your friend's bikes also.

I too felt a decease in pick up and pronounced vibrations after my first service. Could it be that service center guys were just clumsy or Is it that SZ-RR requires special maintenance procedure (yeah, i know that sounds stupid). I also recall the service center mechanic urging me to take the FZ b'cos it has better electrical (What does that mean ?).
PS:Well if you put full tank petrol, the vibrations reduces a bit

When moving, downshifting is ok(Well I really never needed to downshift to 1st while moving). But I have serious problem downshifting to 1st gear at stops.Downshifting till neutral is fine.I have to rock the bike front and back to put to 1st.Is this normal ? I have completed 1K.
