Okay.Motul 5100 was an experiment to see how it did on my Gladi since a lot of people reported that it gave better mileage. And it did.Originally posted by HydBiker View Post

Before Motul, the mileage was always under or at 50. Now though I am getting 55-60. Maths: 5/50x100=10%.Originally posted by HydBiker View PostWhat was the % improvement in mileage?

But then, the lack in pickup was plain annoying.

I am using castrol power 1 after using yamalube for more than a year.Originally posted by nightwing View PostIt is 20W40.
And aftermarket stuff is in most cases better than manufacturer's oil.
Despite what people say about Power 1,I seem to have found it a lot better than the Yamalube for my Gladiator.
If you can stretch your budget higher, than there's always the Motul 5100 waiting anxiously to iron out all the vibrations in the footpegs.
But the thing I have noticed since I have moved to Motul from Castrol is that top speed is a bit down. 60 takes relatively longer time to happen.
following changes i have observed.
1. engine is way too smooth than before and starts with out hassle.
2. i think pick up is affected a bit and i think it accelerates slowly
3. mileage has improved
4. and sound of the bike at Rpm above 7000 has changed and it is more like the bikes with modified silencers..
I was clueless should i switch back to original yamalube. or i should continue with castrol power1 money is not the constraint. I feel castrol p1 is a better choice as to smoothness of engine i have got i love. But still I fear of damage to the engine.
Thanks
Prashant.

^^^ why fear?
Castrol Power 1 is a semi synthetic oil and hence it should be better than the Yamalube which is a mineral oil. Also, the power1 is JASO MA2 & API SL (as per the manufacturer's claim) as against JASO MA & API SJ that indicate that the Power 1 is more slippery - means better lubrication - which is good for the engine.
The Power 1 is of the recommended SAE grade for the Gladiator - 20W40 (someone mentioned it is 15W40, that makes it a little better). As long as you don't get a duplicate can (buy only from direct Castrol Distributors or Bike Zones or the likes you can trust on to get genuine stock from Castrol) and you shouldn't be disappointed.
Only thing I am concerned about is the decreased acceleration you have mentioned about... is it really true or is it that you don't realize it because of the extra smoothness induced into your engine?

My Gladiator's pick up is the best while using Power 1 among the three oils I have tried.Motul,Yamalube and Castrol. Maybe the tuning isnt right with your Gladi.Originally posted by novice_biker View PostI am using castrol power 1 after using yamalube for more than a year.

Also my Gladiator has always sounded a bit different than the others. It's more ruder and booming. Not to mention it's faster too. Nothing beats a well maintained bike.
As Hydbiker sir has mentioned, get yourself Gulf Pride if you can. Else,if you are going for Castrol then make sure you get it from an authorized dealer. There's lots of fakes in the market.
I had a talk with the head of Castrol Bike Zone Lucknow where I get my Gladiator serviced and he told me that lots of empty Power One cans are refilled with used oil and resealed and put back into market by local sellers.
So you might wanna watch out.sigpic

If the oil is being used in the Gladiator it will obviously be discussed in the Gladiator thread.Originally posted by DASCO View PostGuys...is there not a Engine Oil thread somewhere????
More about the bike and less about the oil please...
The 2-3 pages are completely about engine oil guys....please stop..

Sixteen thousand kms done.Got the bike serviced today. The Motul was still thick and clean enough so I have stored it to be used in my Discover(if it comes back....ever).
Issues:
1.The chain cover was making a rattle when it met the chain at a point-Resolved.
2.Disc Brakes were making a *krrrr* noise whenever the brake lever was applied -Resolved.
3. Speedometer conked off without any reason.-Unresolved.Waiting for the speedometer cable.
Except for that everything is fine.

The dealer still hasnt got the filter.Have to wait a day for the speedometer cable to arrive.Spare parts are hard to come by.Especially if you have the old Gladiator. It's lost among the crowd of Fz16s and R15s. We have ceased to be the premium customers of Yamaha, aint we?Originally posted by prashanth lobo View Post^^ Thats good... What about the rs/ss filter that you had asked about... did you get that done too?? Which oil did you go in for this time??
Using Castrol Power One currently since I was unable to get through to Gulf people either through phone or Email.
P.S.: I may have to nick someone's airfilter,I suppose.

... I guess nickin someones airfilter will be a quick way to get it rather than waiting for the dealer
... But i'm pretty sure the newer air filter will do good to your bike... Hopefully will give you smoother performance with better air flow into the engine...
