for an air filter different brands are- cosworth,k&n,green cotton,simota...
i've installed a cosworth air filter worth .since the filter would provide more air you will need to up-jet the carb.visit this website for the air filter sniper-auto.com/ you will get both the filter and jet from this shop.
you can also install a smaller 13t front chain sprocket compared to the stock 14t.
these are the simplest and most low budget performance mods and won't provide you a major bump in performance but still be marginally better than the stock.

      • My FZS idle RPM is set to 1000-1100.
        Is it ok????
because in manual it says 1300-1500RPM
when i start my engine it is in 1000-1100 range but when it gets warm it increases so is it ok to ride in that 1000-1100 RPM???

But if u use your clutch the way it should be used or rather i should say if used wisely, then a set of clutch plates can be used for 50+k kms.
Mine is close to it's 50s , trouble free.

Such a reliable bike this one is! The only "major" repairs I've had to do on the bike after 3 years, 9 months (34,000 odd kms) - battery change, chain-sprocket set change, fork bearings and swing arm bushing. That's it. Still smooth as ever. I continue getting compliments on how smooth the bike is and how it doesn't seem almost 4 years old.

            • FZ-S Engine Issue

              Hi FZians,

My FZ-S is 2009 model and 24k kms odo. I switched from mineral oil to Motul 300V FS at 20k. Before transition I replaced mineral oil at 16k and hence the interval was 4k kms which is high considering it is mineral oil. Its due to my negligence.

Now I'm getting smoke at higher rpms but not at lower rpms as well "ting ting" sound which is due to rings gone kaput (my guess). Engine oil level didn't reduce for the past 2k kms.
Gave the bike to workshop and today they opened the heart and saying following parts need to be replaced:
              1. Complete Cylinder kit (due to ring marks inside cylinder)
              2. Both valves since they wore out (What is apprx life of valves?)
              3. Timing chain
              4. Spark plug (only 4k kms old)
              5. Clutch plates (8k kms old)
              6. Two bearings inside engine
              7. Oil seals

Have anyone faced the above issues?
Whether delaying the oil (mineral) change for 1000 km will lead of above issues?
Is it possible to replace only rings without changing piston and without reboring?

              Experts please give your opinion.

Well you know the answer already. Manual is your bible.. follow it!! increase the rpm to the recommended level and no keeping on low RPM doesnot increase any mileage which is a common stupid notion. During winters or in between traffic you may otherwise witness engine shutting off due to inadequate idling.

As far as my understanding goes, you over running your engine with mineral then the recommended interval led to the cylinder walls not having enough lubrication and as a result the glazing phenomenon took place and most likely the old oil and soot covered up that layer over a period of time. 300V being superior oil with better lubrication cleaning properties then cleaned out those layers which has resulted in showing up the symptoms what you are mentioning about.

Although the engine oil level would usually be consumed in the process due to oil getting sheared in the combustion section. However, if by inspection the SVC has revealed the problem i would say if your budget permits immediately replace all the parts. You will have to start your run-in process again. Make sure you ask the SVC mechanic to check the condition of the crankshaft whether there is too much play.

Yes it is possible for the clutch plates to go kaput because of lack of lubrication however, it is difficult to judge without personally inspecting the bike.

@ALL: Always remember that the engine oil is like the blood that flows in our veins.. you become lethargic and mess with it and your ride will give you a huge pile of bills and maintenance headache. Engine oil also acts as a heat exchanger, scrubber to remove acid and dirt formation inside the engine due to exposure to air and elements and lubrication ofcourse.

                • Saddle Bags, covers, tire Sealant & GPS Nav

                  Hi All,

                  TOURING GEAR & RAIN COVER

Although this is a slight OT but this post is specifically for the tourer bunch who love to or intend to do major long distance runs but are worried about handling luggage on their respective FZs. Older members may recollect that i had procured dirtsack Roadking saddlebag. It seems Dirtsack has come out with a lot of other bags too for different ranges. Roadking bag has now been rebadged as Long Ranger and is a direct fit on our FZs with a total of 44 litres of luggage space. The saddlebag doesnot touch the exhaust of FZ.

                  Pic 1 & 2: Dirtsack Long Ranger

For those who already have saddle bags but don't have any rain covers, dirtsack provides well crafted rain covers for their respective bags and that too at a meagre cost of 300 bucks INR.

                  Pic 3 & 4: Rain Covers for luggage/saddlebags

                  Web link for dirtsack: http://www.dirtsack.in/

check the link above. I have had a good experience with my saddlebag.. the chains and the seams have held out pretty well and there are no signs of any stiches being under fatigue after a lot of abuse. The product again comes from passionate riders who know the needs of a tourer hence, personally would recommend it over other brands available in India.

                  TIRE SEALANT

Altough i would personally recommend Ride On TPS tire sealant as i am very happy with its performance, it seems the Ride On Dealer has still failed to provide PET bottles for people who are staying in B & C type cities and are constantly plagued by tire punctures on stock tires.

Rider Iceman331 has had a very good experience with Slime tire sealant. So for riders who are constantly getting plagued by tire punctures, this may be a good alternative.

Pic 5 & 6: Slime in 8 ounces and 16 ounces PET bottles

carkhana.com, is a good online store to make the purchase of Slime products as they have officially tied up with the importer of Slime in India for its products. If fellow rider are still worried about bogus transactions then they can also visit ebay.in and look for carkhana as official trusted seller and make transactions via ebay to get add on user money payback guarantee and accountability. The price at which they are offering Slime is a steal. They offer free shipping across India.

                  GPS NAVIGATOR

Again for the tourer lot. Those who want Satellite based independent GPS Navigators for touring fun, can look into the model below

Pic 7: Garmin Nuvi 40 LM, INR 8,200

Pic 8: Satguide Navi 4.3, Price: INR 6,490

Pic 9: Mapmyindia Roadpilot, Price: INR 7990

                  Again sold by carkhana
                  .com

Garmin is considered to be the grand dad of GPS navigation kits across the world. With the cigarette lighter jugaad mod on our FZ/Fazers that i had posted about a few pages back, this 40LM model from Garmin can be used on our bikes and also can be detached and used in cars. And also say when you visit a new city, this can be carried along with you so that you don't get ripped by local Taxis and auto wallahs. Comes with an inbuilt battery so is mobile too. Lifetime free maps (lifetime of the product) and is literally 95-97% accurate even in remote villages and areas as per my research.

Then you have the Mapmyindia Roadpilot GPS Navigator. Pretty good and have up to date maps. However it doesnot feature free lifetime updates like Garmin provides. One will have to purchase a special plan from Mapmyindia for the same.

Cheaper alternative is Satguide Navi 4.3, however i don't have much of data/reviews on that. Same problem as mapmyindia. No Free lifetime updated maps of India which is very important as companies constantly survey and update maps with details like restaurents, ATMs, petrol bunks, food stores, malls etc. Makes life just a lot easier in a new place.

                  Web link for Carkhana: http://www.carkhana.com/

Hope all this blabbering was helpful.

                  Cheers,

                  • Hi Shiv,

Nice info. Loved the bags. Though before buying just check if it comes too close with FFE or else buy one designed for upswept exhaust. Also check if they are not protruding more from the motorcycle, little dangerous in the traffic & during overtaking. Check if the clearance between the tire & bags. Looking at the size of the bags, you will need to install sari guard on the other side as well & be lightweight as far as possible.
Don't buy any of the GPS you mentioned, they are not water/dust proof. Or else buy weatherproof casings. I'm using Garmin Etrex Vista HCX, pretty handy on treks, as well as on the road. You can transfer any route, track points from Google maps to this GPS. My personal experience, you don't need GPS on Indian roads. Good to have one, but not necessary. I had one, before I started riding so continued using it.

                            • I have been using a FZ16 for the past 4 years now. I was one of the lucky few who got delivery of my FZ in Thane back in 2008. Since then the bike has kept me entertained. It doesnot falter under any condition. However despite all the plus points still i havent been able to get my knee down during cornering session. Peg Feelers start grinding before i can get my knee down. Have most owners been facing the same problem.

I had the same problem like yours in my new fz-16. I Mean somewhere at 1k ODO. It was just for one or couple of times. Then this problem disappeared by itself. Maybe because of bad fuel. Anyways wait and see if this problem persists.
