  • Air inlet obstruction - A BIG Mistake on my part!!

Guys I think I finally found the source of the popping sound while accelerating.
While cleaning the bike today I found that my vehicle documents (covered in a polythene bag) was covering the inlet of the air-filter
I realised I had been riding like this for almost 3000km (Completely my fault. Should've kept the documents in a different place but didn't notice the warning by Yamaha not to block the inlet. But hey!! they should make that warning more visible!! NOT just emboss letters on black plastic!!).

Removed the obstruction and the engine feels alive!! Like coming out of water after being underwater for a while

Now the question is since I was unknowingly riding with this "setup" for a long long time, could it have caused some premature damage to my engine??
Is it advisable to do some checks? If so then what should I check?? I think lesser air would've made my mixture richer right? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    Any advice would be helpful!!

    Cheers!!

        • Hi guys

I have booked the new fz16; midnight black colour. After getting the bike I am planning for long drive (more that 100KM). One of my friend told me that, such long drive will create issues to new engine. Please let me know your thoughts.

Your friend is right in the essence. A new engine is not set properly and it needs to run-in for the parts (piston, cylinder, gears etc) to wear properly and get set to the correctly to the tolerances.
You can go on the ride but you have to ensure you follow the run-in procedures correctly. Also you shouldn't be straining your new engine so soon. So on the ride you probably shouldn't be taking a pillion. And you should maintain RPMs below 4.5k for the first 500km with occasional bursts to about 6 - 7k rpm (thats important).
Plus you have to modulate the throttle to varying engine speeds. The idea is to give the engine different loads to help it settle.

A new engine generates a lot minute metal impurities as the moving parts rub against each other and these impurities get into your engine oil. So initially you should be changing the oil and oil-filter early (maybe at about 150-200km). Or this damages the engine internals.

Since there are so many things to running-in a new engine, its suggested that you ride in the city for the first 100km or so, change your engine oil once and then decide to for a long ride on the highway. City riding is good for running in as it subjects the engine to different speeds. Highway riding at speed on a brand new engine will only damage it unless you are very well versed with engines and know exactly what you are doing.

There has been extensive discussion on running-in on this thread. Request you to search in google by adding xBhp to your search query.

            Hope that helps.

            Cheers!!

It would be fine if you ride atleast 250-300 kms in city so that your engine parts get mated well and then you can take her for a long ride. Anyways follow the owner's manual for the first 1000 kms then you can ride like as want.

I dont know.. in the manual its written that the front brake lever and brake light activation should be adjusted by a Yamaha dealer. You can adjust the rear settings. Is it some rocket science!?

                    1) You have micro puncture/s in your front tire.
                    2) Front rims and the tire wall have not bed in correctly thus, the pressure drops the moment you fill the tire above 27-28 psi and stays normal when you fill only 24 psi at which the tire seems to be holding the pressure quite well.
                    3) There might be some dirt which has got in between the tire wall and the rim causing this problem
                    4) Some manufacturing defect with the stock MRF tire although remote but cannot be left out as one of the possible causes.

Hope the above conclusions helps you to pinpoint the problem.

                    Cheers,
Thanks for the suggestions. I've again checked this with another service center guys (in Anna Salai) and found that the mouth pin is damaged. Replaced the pin...Till now there is no decrease in Pressure

yes, for me it is the front brake sensor , I think the mechanic messed something up when he changed the front brake pads, will check with him this weekend.

                          • Mounts for Mobile Phone/GPS Navigator

                            Hi all,

I had posted a few pages back about GPS navigator/Phone charging jugaad and also the navigation units in a budget price.

                            The link for the same:
                            1) bags, GPS and othr goodies: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...tml#post892809

                            2) Cigarette Ligther socket (jugaad)mod for powering devices: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...tml#post888386

Rider Kauria has already shown us a very simple yet elegant adjustable pouch which he got it made at a local shop for about Rs. 100/- as shown in the picture below:

Anyways, for those who are looking for special mounts for holding their phones on their bikes, they can look at this option from Flipkart: http://http://www.flipkart.com/amzer...7-3b9ba99706e0

                            Cost: INR 1760/-

The above accessory can be connected to the handle bar of our respective FZs/Fazers and is adjustable and has been tested by users on rugged roads without the phone/GPS Navigator falling off or anything.

Alternate Option for the same (specifically for GPS Navigators, although full touch screen phones can also be put in:

                            1) Ebay Seller,Motorcycle handlebar mount for Tom Tom & Garmin GPS with 5 different types of pouches: GN032'5: Motorcycle / Handlebar Mount & Case for Garmin TomTom Magellan GPS-FMV | eBay

                            Price: Rs. 2119

This one comes with 5 different types of pouches for different sized GPS so i am under the impression, one can add a bit of foam inside to install a smaller touch screen phone if needed. This should provide some protection from a light drizzle.

So the both the two accessory options shown are detachable and once mounted will look something like this:

The same mount can also be installed on the left hand side of the bike as well.

                            Video demo of the product:

I guess i am becoming too much of crazy tourer now.

@abhijitkn: Mate this is what i had in mind when i was talking about Fully independent Sat Nav GPS options.

                            Cheers,

Ya the plate is towards ride side will adjust it.
Maybe it will hit the mudguard as i was also thinking the same, will adjust it little upward.
It was made in just matter of little time.. R&D is still to be done

                              Hii..
I made a stand of L-shape and bolt it to headlight adjusting nut and bolt.
Will post the pics soon and I am adjusting the height of it as it might hit the mudguard.
