Not running lean. Changed the oil and poured Motul 3000T, did a long ride yesterday and no heating issues. Not sure what was wrong with that oil

Well, i changed the oil and there is no heating. Looks like there was some issue with the oil.

thats right buddy.. i also changed to mineral due to the same problem and it vanished.. sometimes faulty oil can do this..

Hi guys,

I have been riding a Yamaha FZ16 for nearly 1 year now and have done about 6000 kms on it. Although it is a very smooth ride, I am experiencing two problems

1. Engine misfire

It not too much, but I hear a muffled popping sound when i rev down(leave the accelerator). I never hear it while revving up. As usual my lackluster SVC mechanic says it is normal, although this sound is new to me. SVC cleaned the spark plug and air filter but did not clean carb even after I insisted. I also experienced a slight power loss in the lower revs but I am not a very good judge of that. I am a heavy person (95kg) and get 105-110kph topspeed, although the pick up has reduced slightly. I have never got my carb tuned since I bought my bike. Should I do it?

P.S. I get a burning smell from time to time when I go at high rpms for sometime, but after reading other people's experiences about this, it seems to be normal and unrelated, but I thought I'd put it out there.

2. Handle vibration and "tak-tak" noise

The handle vibrates on bumpy roads. When going on large bumps or speedbreakers I get 2 "tak" sounds from under the speedo (probably where the steering section connects to the main frame). I had this opened from a local mechanic and he wanted to change some bearings. The stock bearings come in a plastic casing, while he wanted to put in standard bearings, so I refused. The SVC tightened the handle which reduced vibration, but the tak tak sound still persists. They discouraged me from changing bearings.

I was very disappointed with the hurried service the SVC has done so far and as I am done with my free services, I was wondering what maintenance should I do(eg. part change, regular checks) now that I have completed a significant distance? I love this bike and am very particular about little things which the mechanics at the SVC don't have time to look into. I hope you huys can help me. Thanks!

Also,

I am looking for an experienced mechanic in Kolkata, who can install performance filters and/or tune the bike if necessary.

Can't say what might be causing the popping sound..

SVC cleaned the spark plug and air filter but did not clean carb even after I insisted.
even i have experienced the same.. They completely refused to touch the carb and gave me a silly reason that they need Yamaha's permission to open carb n engine.. I was like.. WTF ??

Sometimes power loss occurs due to old engine oil, old spark plug, blocked air-filter, loose chain and low tyre pressure. Check all of them..

I have never got my carb tuned since I bought my bike. Should I do it?
Ya, you should get the tuning checked. Sometimes lean mixture also causes many problems..

P.S. I get a burning smell from time to time when I go at high rpms for sometime, but after reading other people's experiences about this, it seems to be normal and unrelated, but I thought I'd put it out there.
this buring smell is due to baking mud on the engine n silencer. Get the bike properly cleaned and check if the problem still presists..

Can't comment on this as i haven't faced this problem. Still get all the nuts tightened and if you feel that the bearings are worn out, do get them repleced.
mostly, the thak thak sound comes from the loose chain hitting the swing arm. Check for that..

I was very disappointed with the hurried service the SVC has done so far and as I am done with my free services, I was wondering what maintenance should I do(eg. part change, regular checks) now that I have completed a significant distance? we all here love our bikes and take utmost care while dealing with it..
SVC is always like that.. The best is to either find a reliable local mech to do your job, or be very firendly with the mechanics and the SVC head.. This has helped me a lot recently..

The reply is in bold..

ANS: Check the carb and ensure that it has been cleaned and tuned properly. The air box hose needs to be checked for any holes. The AIS box/ Air Induction System needs to be overhauled.

2. Handle vibration and "tak-tak" noise

ANS: Sounds like coneset issue. Check if the condition of the coneset is fine. If not you will have to get it replaced. Costs around 700 - 800 bucks. It is possible for the coneset to give away if the roads are really bad or during service someone fiddled with the locking nut and didn't tighten it to the correct torque range required as per the service manual. I hope the reference screen grab from the service manual will give you an idea about what to inspect and how to inspect:

Pic 1 & 2: Chassis inspection, coneset and front forks.

I was very disappointed with the hurried service the SVC has done so far and as I am done with my free services, I was wondering what maintenance should I do(eg. part change, regular checks) now that I have completed a significant distance? Thanks a lot for the help shv18.

The SVC increased my idle rpm slightly (nearly 2k), which seems to have reduced the misfires. But I still feel a bit of power loss. I am afraid I might have fueled up at the wrong pump too many times.

Havent got the coneset looked over though, as it is supposedly a long job and will take time, so I think I'd do it over the weekend.

I am trying to learn about bikes, so at least I can do basic repairs myself. I have been doing a lot of reading, and have been itching to do some work on the bike. Is it a good idea to clean the carb and AIS myself, without messing up the tuning? Can I find some literature or videos about how to do it?

Thanks nadz11 for the reply. I was speaking of performance air filters from K&N. They have a stock replacement filter(YA-1611) and universal conical filter(RC1060). I am still confused as to which one to get. And the correct upjet size.

These filters would harm your engine in the long run.. As they allow for more air to enter the engine and they this with more dust..
better be away from them..
even if you install such filters, it would not give much difference and would only change the sound..
i suggest you read the thread named POWERHOUSE FZ18.. Search for it.. Its a gold mine if you want to install power parts on your bike..

grvrai... Carb cleaning and tuning cannot be done at home. It is not advisable to do so. Same goes for the AIS also. It will be better if you take up the matter with SVC. Firstly, check the condition of your spark plug to know whether the engine is running lean or not. Also, the idle RPM is on the higher side, it should be in between 1200-1500rpm. Incase there is water in your fuel tank, there are chances of misfiring. The rain water might have seeped in the tank. Other cause for misfiring is adultrated fuel.

Thx for the reply. Maybe I was getting ahead of myself.. The SVC refused to check the carb, and told me the misfire was normal (which I don't think it is, Coz it wasn't there for nearly 5k kms). They also increased the idle, but it still misfires on revving down. I was thinking of doing the cleaning myself coz I keep hearing of local mechs messing up the carb. But I will find someone. BTW how do I check if I am running lean? What's the ideal condition of the spark plug?

By any means had you done wash of your bike lately? If yes, do this, pull the cap that is over spark plug. Blow air inside it to remove water particles.

If the tip of spark plug is brownish, the AFR is perfect. If the color is whitish, the bike is running lean.
